Grateful Dead 1989 - Back to Back - #1: We've written on numerous occasions  here at So Many Roads about the Grateful Dead's legendary Fall 1989 East Coast tour which included:
  • The Formerly The Warlocks shows in Hampton  on October 8 and 9 that featured tunes such as Death Don't Have No Mercy, Attics of My Life and And We Big You Goodnight, staples of the 1970s that hadn't been played in years. booked themselves into the Hampton Arena under the pseudonym “Formerly The Warlocks”.
  • The 5 night run at the Byrne Arena in NJ that finished with a masterpiece on October 16, Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday, featuring a 2nd set that wove songs in and out of Dark Star and Playing in The Band, which was later officially released as the album, Nightfall Of Diamonds (I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night!).
  • A classic in Miami on October 26,  highlighted by one of the finest post 1970s versions of Dark Starr, which was included in the box set, 30 Trips Around the Sun.
The Dead warmed up for that tour with 3 shows on September 29, 30 and October 1 in Mountain View, CA just south of their home base of San Francisco.  Look at the set lists for those 3 concerts and there's no hint of what was to come on the East Coast, except for a few brief moments on night 1, September 29, 1989, 31 years ago today, when the Dead surprised everyone (and maybe even themselves) with the first Death Don'T Have No Mercy since April 26, 1970!  Download this soundboard recording to hear that historic moment, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Phil Lesh 2003 - Back to Back to Back - ##1: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, Joan Osborne, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. This version of Phil & Friends, as captured in this soundboard recording from San Francisco on September 27, 2003, 17 years ago today, includes 3 more legends - John Molo, Warren Haynes, and Jimmy Herring. Download this one, the come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this set.

Jimmy Buffett 2016 - Back to Back - #1: Jimmy Buffett's 2016 I Don't Know Tour found him criss - crossing the US, playing 26 dates starting on May 23 in Austin, TX and ending on October 22 in Irvine. CA. As part of the run, he did something unusual - he played 2 shows in Paris in September. Buffett rarely played Europe, as the BufettNews website lists only 23 concerts total on that continent in his long storied career. France has been his favorite European destination, accounting for 19 of those concerts, all in the "City of Lights". This FM broadcast captures the first of his two Paris shows, on September 23, 2016, 4 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

Spin Doctors 1993 - Back To Back - #1: In August 1991, the Spin Doctors released their debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, but it barely received any commercial or critical notice. It took almost a year before folks picked up on the album, bolstered by MTv playing videos of Two Princes and Little Miss Can't be Wrong. Sales suddenly took off, with the album certifying gold by September 1992, and reaching triple platinum status by June 1993. The disc peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, and the 2 singles mentioned previously both cracked the top 20. By the way, the album got its title from a line from its opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, which didn't chart when originally released, but eventually cracked the Billboard Top 100 after the band's big commercial breakthrough. This soundboard recording captures the band at the height of their commercial success, in Melbourne, Australia on September 18, 1993, 27 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Furthur 2009 - Back To Back To Back - #1:  Furthur, named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band,  following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group  In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way.  This soundboard recording captures the band on on their home turf, in Oakland across the bay from San Francisco, on September 18, 2009, 11 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for the rest of this Back to Back to Back set.

Historical notes - The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

Download note - like the Other Ones and The Dead posts, while this concert was found this at the internet archive, since most Furthur shows have been officially released, this and the next 2 will be up a week and then gone.  Get them now.

Here's what readers had to say about Ten Rules Of The Road:

If you grew up in the 1960s or 1970s and enjoyed going to.rock concerts, then Speedy's story is your story. This tale reminds you of the best and worst parts of attending concerts, and captures the magic of those moments when the music was truly transcendent. Well written, engaging and filled with truth is stranger than fiction moments, Ten Rules is a must read for any rock music fan.

Speedy said he's not a professional writer but wanted to author a love letter to live music. He hits the mark with a lot of love along the way. It's a nice reminder of what concerts can do and the magic they can bring. Especially with the last 6 months, it's a nice reminder of the power of a great show.

A fun journey through years of live concerts told with unique stories and musical encounters from the authors point of view. An enjoyable read!

True stories by a real person: Being it my mid 50’s I share a lot of the same memories. Very well written and totally relatable.

Great for anyone who loves live music: Everything you need to know -ish. Lots of fun anecdotes and details that really make you feel like you're sitting with someone, listening to stories about concerts!

Nick Lowe 2011 - Back To Back To Back - #1:  As music as evolved over the years, so has Nick Lowe.  The man who burst onto the scene in the late 1970s with an album of new wave classics thtat had not 1 but 2 great titles (released as Jesus Of Cool in the UK, Lowe has to change the name for US release to avoid offending folks who might object to the religious reference, so it became Pure Pop For Now People in the states!), Lowe played rockabilly with Dave Edmunds in Rockplie, drawing inspiration from the Everly Brothers on many tunes, then went on to solo career featuring a host of diverse releases. His 2011 album, The Old Magic, for example. saw Lowe taking the role, in the words of critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine of "an old crooner". On stage, touring in support of the disc, his shock of gray hair and Buddy Holly glasses saw Lowe embracing, rather than running from old age.  Of course, never afraid to take risks, that 2011 tour found him playing solo acoustic while opening for the alternative rock band Wilco!  This soundboard recording captures him during that run, in Toronto on September 16, 2011, 9 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for the rest of this Back To Back To Back set.

Paul McCartney 2017 - Back to Back - #1: Since 1993, I've seen Sir Paul McCartney in concert on 8 occasions and the last 3, in 2015, 2016 and 2017, I went with both my wife and my twin boys. We started that run back in June 2015, a Father's Day show in Philadelphia, which was also the first concert my boys ever went to! The set list that night included the tune Macca wrote for Destiny, one of my boy's favorite video games. We followed that up with an August 7, 2016 show at Giants Stadium on what what would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul broke out Birthday that night, the first time I had ever heard him play that song live. Then on September 15, 2017, 3 years ago today, at Madison Square Garden on my Mom's 85th birthday, Macca topped all the previous shows I had attended. For over 3 hours, Sir Paul entertained us as almost no other performer can, telling stories, paying tribute to lost friends and lovers, playing over 40 songs spanning almost 60 years of musical history. Beatles tunes, Wings songs, and solo numbers, From In Spite Of All The Danger, written by the Quarymen in 1958, to Four Five Seconds, written with Rihanna and Kanye in 2015. From rockers such as Helter Skelter (maybe Sir Paul did invent Heavy Metal?!?) to ballads such as And I Love Her. He played Love Me Do for George Martin, Something for George Harrison, Here Today for John Lennon and Maybe I'm Amazed for Linda. He told tales of Jimi playing a gig at a club in London, and asking Eric to come up on stage to help re-tune his guitar and of hopping in a cab with Mick & Keith. He told them casually, easily, in the same way we would talk about going to a concert or dinner with a friend. Except for Macca, those "mates,” as he refers to them, are rock gods! Near  the end of this already incredible night, Paul told us he had some special guests in the house, and the next thing we knew, Bruce Springsteen and Miami Steve Van Zandt strode on stage.  They launched into I Saw Her Standing There, the first song on the first side of the first Beatles album. Paul and Bruce traded verses at the mic while Miami Steve took a solo. When it ended some 3 or 4 minutes later, the crowd was in a frenzy. Ever the consummate showman, Macca did the only thing he could do - to Springsteen's surprise, he counted the band down into a 2nd complete version of the tune! Yes, back to back versions of I Saw Her Standing There! That finally satisfied us all, and Bruce and Miami Steve took their final bows. Then, telling us all it was late and we had to go home - and yes - he had to go home as well, Sir Paul launched into Golden Slumbers into Carry That Weight into the only song that could bring the night to a close, The End. As the house lights came on, we knew we had witnessed a masterpiece, a Picasso unfolding live on stage, to the soundtrack of the greatest rock music ever played. This soundboard recording captures it all - download it then come back in two days for part 2 of this Back To Back set,

One note - Sir Paul did not play a show on the 16th, so the 15th and 17th were back to back performances.  Though that's not exactly how we usually view Back to Back shows here at So Many Roads - normally they are 2 on the same day or 2 or more on consecutive days - if we're going to make an exception, then for who better than the one and only Sir Paul McCartney!
