1990s - #2: After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTv approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any old wounds, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. This soundboard captures Plant and Page during that tour on March 11, 1995, 31 years ago today in New Orleans.

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

When they first got together in 2008, it seemed to be an unlikely partenership to say the least.  Robert Plant was the howling voice of Led Zeppelin, the masters of hard rock. Alison Krauss was a bluegrass icon, know for her angelic, hypnotic vocals.  Yet, when they came together in the studio in late 2007, with legendary producer T Bone Burnett, the result was magic.  Their album, Raising Sand, went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year, along with 4 others. The critics also loved the disc, with the Village Voice, for example, writing that it was "powerfully evocative" and "utterly foreign, oddly familiar, and deeply gratifying".  The duo toured in 2008, then went their separate ways until 2022, when they again hit the road together.  This FM broadcast captures Plant and Krauss at Glastonbury on June 23, 2022, 3 years ago today!

In May 1993, Robert Plant released his 6th solo studio album, entitled Fate Of Nations. Plant explained the album as folllows: "From the very beginning of this project, around January 1991, right after the Manic Nirvana tour, I knew what I was going to do: go back into my past, listening to [Moby] Grape, the [Jefferson] Airplane, Tim Hardin, Quicksilver, Traffic, and other turning-point artists in rock. These people were trying to tell the listener something...".  Perhaps looking to the past in creating Fate Of Nations was a sign, because the next venture he embarked on was a reunion with his Led Zeppelin bandmate Jimmy Page in 1994.  In any event, the FM broadcast captures Plant on tiur in suppiort of Fate Of Nations on December 20, 1993, 31 years go today, in Amsterdam.

1995 - After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. This soundboard captures Plant and Page during that tour on October 3, 1995, 27 years ago today in Irvine.

After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. 1990s - #4: Rio De Janeiro, Brazil’s 2nd largest city, has become a hotbed for Rock & roll. In addition to the Rock in Rio festival, Rio hosted the Hollywood Rock Festival in the 1980’s and 1990s. By the way, the name of the festival was not related to Hollywood, California but rather was taken from a brand of cigarettes that sponsored the event. Robert Plant headlined the 1994 edition of the festival, along with Aerosmith, Poison, Ugly Kid Joe, Sepultura, Live and Whitney Houston. This soundboard recording captures Plant’s set from January 22, 1994, 28 years ago today.
