After departing Kingfish in August 1976 as the Grateful Dead returned to full time touring, Bob Weir went 8 years before he again took the stage with them.  Then in fall 1984, Weir rejoined Kingfish as a part time member, playing sporadically with the group over the next 3 years. This soundboard recording captures Weir with Kingfish on December 26, 1984, 40 years ago today, at the Stone in San Francisco.  Bill Kreutzmann and Merl Saunders also sit in. Of note, the tape has a brief set from George Thorogood between the two by Kingfish, but it may not be from this date.  According to the GDsets.com site, the Thorogood appearance came on October 26 (not December 26) at the same venue. The 2 Kingfish sets match exactly what the GDsets.com shows for December 26. (go here for more info).

Besides the 50 times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden (another one that has been officially released). Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others. Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa.

This Garcia concert features one of his most frequent collaborators, the legendary keyboardist Merl Saunders. From December of 1970 to June of 1975, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, mostly on the west coast, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone, That disc documents their concerts form July 10 and 11, 1973 at the Keystone in Berkeley, CA. This soundboard recording captures Jerry and Merl just a few days earlier, on July 5, 1973, 49 years ago today.

San Francisco became synonymous with the Summer of Love, and no band symbolized the cultural changes taking place in the city by the bay more than the Grateful Dead. They were the house band for ken Kesey's Electric Kool Aid Acid tests and lived at 710 Ashbury in the city's Haight Ashbury district, home of the hippies. And their spiritual and musical leader, guitarist Jerry Garcia, was the poster child for the counter culture. Garcia was nicknamed Captain Trips, as he was the embodiment of the cultural, musical and psychedelic experimentation of the times. The year 1967 featured a multitude of classic albums and Garcia was heavily involved in two of them, the Dead's debut disc and Surrealistic Pillow, the break though album from the other pillar of San Francisco's psychedelic sound, the Jefferson Airplane. Jerry is credited as a "spiritual advisor" on Surrealistic Pillow, though, according to the Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen, Garcia, for all intents and purposes, served as the producer for the disc. For Garcia, 1967 was the start of a long strange trip that would be filled with musical and personal triumphs and tragedies, until we lost him way too soon in 1995. This soundboard recording from June 4, 1974, 7 years after the Summer of Love and 4 dozen years ago today,  captures Jerry with one of his favorite partners outside of the Grateful Dead, Merl Saunders. From 1971 to 1975, Garcia, and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, mostly on the west coast. Legion Of Mary 1975 - Back To Back - #1: During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to forming a new band known as Legion of Mary. In addition to Garcia, Legion of Mary (LOM) included Merl Saunders on keyboard, Martin Fierro on sax, and Ron Tutt on drums. While the band’s tenure was short, Garcia used it to continue to explore and experiment with a host of musical styles. In their live shows, the band melded together an eclectic mix blues, funk, reggae, rock, psychedalia, and especially jazz. This set from Milwaukee, WI on April 20, 1975, 47 years ago today, is a perfect example of the breath and range of music covered by LOM. The band played R&B songs such as I Feel Like Dynamite and That's What Love Will Make You Do, Motown tunes such as Boogie On Reggae Women and I’m A Road Runner, jazz numbers such as Favela, and reggae classics such as Sitting In Limbo and The Harder They Come. The two even released a live album together, entitled Live At The Keystone, featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo at the same venue, about 6 months earlier, on December 28, 1972, 4 years ago today.  A note - for years this show had listed as having taken place at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo, but recently a poster was found indicating that Jerry and Merl were at the Keystone on this date.
