By the way - just wondering if Deal in the second set, a rare placement for that tune, is a tribute to the city where gambling reigns supreme. And one last note - as only the Dead could do, the Sunshine Daydream to end set 2 completes the Sugar Magnolia which was played the night before!

Grateful Dead - 1991-04-27 - Las Vegas, NV (SBD)

As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:
  • a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
  • the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • the Giants Stadium shows from June 16 and 17, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991
Without a doubt, those 3 years marked the last great run of the Dead's incredible career. So with that as backdrop, we'll bring you 2 shows from the Dead's Spring 1991 run, from Las Vegas,  starting with this soundboard recording from April 27, 1991, 2 decades ago today. Download this one then stop back tomorrow for night #2 from Vegas.

On January 27, 2018, my wife and I ventured to the MPAC in Morristown NJ for a night of 1960s pop featuring Tommy James & The Shondells.- They delivered all the big hits from Dragging The Line to Crimson & Clover to Hanky Panky to Crystal Blue Persuasion.  They even played my favorite tune, I Think We’re Alone Now, - twice! First, an acoustic version, which Tommy explained was recorded for a crucial scene in a movie being made of his life. Later in the show, the broke out, the electric version we all remember from the radio.  They encored with Mony Mony and Sweet Cherry Wine, during which Tommy took selfies with the crowd! This sometimes excellent, sometimes very good audience recording captures the band 3 years earlier at the same venue, on April 25, 2015, 6 years ago today, playing a very similar show.

Bruce Hornsby played for over 2 years with the Grateful Dead in the early 1990s, something he never imagined would happen when he was playing covers of their tunes while in college. While the stint with the Dead was short, it was most certainly impactful. Hornby's musicianship challenged Garcia to be at his best each night, and the band's live performances from 1990 to 1991, while maybe not on par with those from 1973, 1974 or 1977, most certainly were their best in a long while. It's probably no coincidence that once Hornsby left the Dead in March 1992, not only did Garci'a's playing slip, but also his health took a turn for the worse, starting him down the path to his death in 1995. This soundboard recording captures Hornsby 3 years after Garcia's passing, on April 25, 1998, 23 years ago today, The show captures the breadth and depth of Hornby’s piano skills and musical repertoire, featuring tunes from his days with the Range, songs from the soon to be released album Spirit Trail, some incredible piano improvisation, tunes from his days with the Dead, and covers of songs from artists ranging from Van Morrison to Traffic to Elton John to Simon & Garfunkel.

To be blunt, I was less than happy when the Angry Joe Jackson of the late 1970s and early 1980s became Sentimental Joe with the release of songs like Stepping Out. I missed the unhappy, growling punk rocker behind songs such as I’m the Man, One More Time and Is She Really Going Out With Him. In 2003, however, Jackson reunited with Graham Maby, David Houghton and Gary Sanford, his original backing band, for an album entitled Volume 4. While not the success his early albums were, Volume 4 was a welcome return to Jackson’s original rock roots. This FM broadcast captures Jackson on tour on April 24, 2003, 18 years ago today, just about 2 months after the release of Volume 4. Download this one to hear Joe reach back to his glory days “one more time”.

Darius Rucker, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, and Mark Bryan all met as freshmen at the University of South Carolina in 1986.  Like probably thousands of college kids across the country, they formed a band, dreaming but probably never expecting, to find fame and fortune. Eight years later in 1994,, when Hootie and the Blowfish released the album Cracked Rear View, could anyone have imagined, including the band, that the album would sell over 16 million copies? That makes it the 15th best selling album in history! Yes, I agree it's almost sacrilegious that Hootie's debut outsold such albums as Abbey Road, Born In The USA, Led Zeppelin II and Dark Side Of The Moon, just to name a few. No one is going to confuse Daruis and his compatriots with Lennon/McCartney when it comes to song writing. But, if everyone can put aside the Hootie backlash just for a few seconds (it's amazing how you can't find anyone who admits they bought the album even though it sold 16 million copies!), folks might recall why they were hooked in the first place. Namely, these guys wrote a host of catchy tunes, Darius has a unique voice, and they sound like the best bar band you ever heard. So, forget your pretensions for a second, and download this FM Broadcast from Hamburg from 26 years ago today, April 23, 1995. Go ahead -- download it. You know you want to and besides, who's going to know if you do!

On January 25, 2000, Warren Zevon released his 10th studio album, entitled Life'll Kill Ya. The disc barely cracked the Billboard 200 rankings, peaking at #173, while critical success was moderate, with Rolling Stone and Allmusic both giving the album 3.5 star ratings. Several of the album's songs deal with the topic of death.  For example,  My Shit's F***ed Up is a mournful lament about the aging process and the inevitable decay that accompanies it. The title track and Don't Let Us Get Sick also feature death as a theme. Perhaps Warren had a premonition of what was in store - just 2 years later he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and he passed away from the disease on September 7, 2003. This soundboard recording captures Zevon on tour in support of Life'll Kill Ya in Seattle on April 22. 2000, 21 years ago today.

On October 10, 2006, Jimmy Buffett released Take The Weather With You, the 27th studio album of his long, storied career. Clearly the years had not impacted his commercial viability, as the album went to #1 on Billboard's country charts, also reaching #4 on the Billboard 200. In an interesting twist, 10 of the 14 songs on the album were covers. Of the 4 tunes Jimmy wrote or co-wrote, two, Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On and Bahama Breeze, were written about Hurricane Katrina and its impact on the Gulf Coast. This soundboard recording captures Jimmy on April 21, 2007, 9 years ago today, on tour in Atlanta in support of Take The Weather With You.

Over the last few years I've been listening to WFUV-FM in New York, broadcasting from Fordham University. A non-commercial station, and a National Public Radio affiliate, WFUV boasts the slogan music discovery starts here." In many ways, the station recaptures the days when DJs had freedom to play the music they liked rather than follow a rigid playlist based on what would sell ads! Go here to see the variety of music they play and if you like what you see, you can listen on your PC.. Former WNEW-FM DJ Dennis Elsas handles the afternoon shift at WFUV, and one of his favorite bands is The Jayhawks. Well, thanks to Dennis, they're now one of mine as well. This FM Broadcast captures The Jayhawks in Seattle on April 21, 2002, 19 years ago today.

In November 2012, Graham Parker reunited with his original band, the Rumour, and released their first album together in 31 years, called Three Chords Good. The title, of course, is a reference to the power pop/new wave/punk era that when Parker and the Rumour began their career. Allmusic noted, however, that despite the disc's title, "Parker is no longer an angry young man, he's a grizzled old curmudgeon with a sentimental streak, a decidedly warmer persona and one that suits the Rumour's revived pub rock." The band also embarked on a tour to promote the album.  This soundboard recording captures Parker and The Rumor in Delaware on April 20, 2013, 8 years ago today.

A year ago this very day, on April 18, 2020, dozens of musical performers donated their time for a virtual concert, called  to raise money for the World Health Organization and the front line workers fighting COVID-19. Here in the US, we were about a month into the pandemic, in lock down, hoping that the summer would bring an end to the dreaded disease. Unfortunately, the response to the diseas became politicized, leading to over 500,000 deaths by year end. Economic hardships have impacted millions, as have the mental health challenges of isolation and loneliness. Remote working, virtual learning, mask wearing and so much more have become part of our lives.  The onset of 2021, has brought hope, however, as newly developed vaccines are being distributed throughout the nation.  Maybe soon some normalcy will return, and we'll be able to return to some degree, to life before COVID, including attending live shows rather than watching them on a screen.  This webcast recording captures highlights of that very first virtual concert, including performances by Paul McCartney, Elton, John, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones & Sheryl Crow. May the future be brighter for all of us.  Note - just 10 minutes ago, I purchased tickets to see John Hiatt on September 25!  Maybe by fall, the worst will be over and live music will have made its triumphant return!

When the Cochella Music and Arts Festival launched in 1999, the 2 day event hosted about 37,000 concert goers, just slightly more than half the foretasted 70,000 the organizers had hoped to draw.  The festival was then cancelled in 2000, and retained in 2001, but only as a single day event.  Things looked bleak for the future until AEG purchased the original promoters of the festival, providing a strong source of funding in the process. Cochella returned to a 2 day format in 2002 and hasn't looked back. Artists such as Paul MccArtney, Prince, Roger Waters, Jay Z, AC DC, Kayne West, Lada Gaga and Beyonce have headlined the festival in recent years.  In 2007, the festival expanded to 3 days.  In 2012, it grew to encompass back to back 3 day weekends, each featuring the same line of artists.  This excellent audience recording captures McCartney's appearance, a dozen years ago today at that the 2009 Festival, on April 17, 2009.

Re-Post Day: April 15

As long time followers of So Many Roads know, our blog takes a "this day in history" approach to selecting shows. In other words, if it's January 1, for example, than the show we post took place on January 1, sometime between 1950 and the present day.

Every now and then, a day rolls by and we don't have a new show associated with that date. Some times we've gotten around that by posting my monthly column on that day. Other times, we've used some other type of informational post.

Well, in the spirit of trying something new, this time around, since I don't have a new show to post on April, I've re-posted download links for many of the prior shows we posted on that date. Those shows are listed below. All you have to do is search for the show you want - just copy and paste it from the list below into one of the 2 search boxes on the blog - and when you get there, you'll find a new link!
  • Bruce Springsteen - 2009-04-15 - Los Angeles CA (SBD Matrix)

  • Elton John - 2010-04-15 - Hoffman Estates, IL (SBD)

For the Tedeschi Trucks Band, 2019 would reflect Dicken's novel, A Tale of two Cities - the best of times, it was the worst of times."  In February, the band released their 4th studio album, Signs, which would go to #28 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The disc would also reach #3 on the rock album, chart, #2 on the folk album charts and climb all the way to #1 on the Blues album chart.  Yet, around the exact same time, long time band member Kofi Burbridge passed away at age of 57, having suffered numerous health issues, including a heart attack the prior year. Ironically, Signs, which has been influenced by the deaths of TTB band mentors Bruce Hampton, Leon Russell, and Butch Truck's, now became a tribute to the band's fallen comrade.  This FM Broadcast captures the band on tour, playing in memory of Kofi, in Germany, on April 14, 2019, 2 years ago today.

In late 1989, Eric Clapton released Journeyman, his 11th solo album and first disc of new material since August in 1986. The album was also Eric’s first since kicking his addiction to alcohol. The disc rose to #16 on the Billboard album charts, and produced 2 singles, Pretending and Bad Love, which made Billboard’s Top 100. Both singles also climbed to #1 on Billboard's mainstream rock chart. Bad Love garnered Clapton a Grammy for best male Rock Vocal Performance. Journeyman also included such notable tracks as Running On Faith, No Alibis and Before You Accuse Me. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review, calling it his most satisfying disc since 461 Ocean Boulevard. The magazine also noted that the title of the album reflected Clapton’s continued preference to down play his guitar god image, preferring to consider himself a journeyman, but a damn fine one who always finds work! In keeping with the album’s title, EC spent much of 1990 on the road visiting 5 continents.  This excellent audience recording captures EC in Hartford, on April 13, 1990, 31 years ago today.
