September’s Theme At So Many Roads

Every September, my musical thoughts turn to the Grateful Dead, and with good reason. September is the month during which I saw the most Grateful Dead shows (25), including:

• My first Dead show on September 3, 1977, the historic Englishtown concert, released as Dicks Picks 15. 
• My favorite Dead show on September 18, 1987 at Madison Square Garden (posted on So Many Roads) 
• The send-off show on September 2, 1978 at Giants stadium before the band left to play the Pyramids (posted on So Many Roads) 
• All 5 nights of the 1987 run at Madison Square Garden 
• Eight of the 9 nights of the 1988 run at Madison Square Garden 
• The September 10, 1991 show with Brandford Marsalis at MSG (posted on So Many Roads) 
• The September 18 - 20, 1990 shows at MSG that were released as part of The Road Trips Series

So, in thinking of this month’s theme for So Many Roads, I wanted to honor the Dead and my September history with them. However, I didn’t want to simply post a bunch of shows I attended. Rather I wanted to do something a bit more special that encapsulated the band’s entire career.

First, I’ll post 4 Dead shows in September from each decade in which they they played live   1960s, 1970’s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Second, I’m going to post 31 concerts by other bands, one from each year the Dead were active as band from 1965 to 1995. Each of those 31 shows will be from a different artist. For each band posted, I’ll give you the historical connection between that band and the Grateful Dead.  Some of those connections will be pretty obvious and extensive, such between the Dead and Bob Dylan or The Allman Brothers. Others linkages will be a bit more tenuous like those between the Dead and bands such as The Doors or Dire Straits. And still others will downright surprise you - wait until you read the Steely Dan and Elvis Presley posts. The complete list of bands posted by year is below:

All in all is 35 posts, loads of great music and some cool historical linkages between the Dead and the rest of the rock world. By the way, this list is not meant to be inclusive of every band connected to the Grateful Dead. Given that I was trying to get a show from every year from 1965 to 1995, and given that I don’t have September tapes from some groups, I couldn’t cover everyone! For example, I know that artists such as John Fogerty, Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry, all with ties to the Dead are missing. I’m sure there are more but hopefully you’ll enjoy what I am able to post. Joe Jackson - 1979-08-31 - Hempstead LI (FM) 

In the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. This FM broadcast captures Joe on tour in support of his debut album, on August 31, 1979, 34 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1975-08-30 - Norfolk, VA (SBD)

In March 1975, Clapton had released the album There’s One in Every Crowd, the follow up to his chart topping disc 461 Ocean Boulevard. Unfortunately, EC’s growing dependence on alcohol made recording the album difficult. As a result, There’s One in Every Crowd didn’t match the quality of its predecessor. The disc only rose to #21 in the Billboard album charts and failed to yield any singles that charted. Despite the album’s lack of commercial success, EC spent most of the year on the road in support of it. He spent April in Australia, his first trip to the Land Down Under, and October in Japan, in between touring the US from June to August. This soundboard recording captures EC in Norfolkon August 30, 1975, 38 years ago today, in Norfolk, VA.

The Beatles - 1966-08-29 - San Francisco CA (HQ Aud) 

On August 29, 1966, 47 years ago today, The Beatles concluded their North American tour with a show at Candlestick Park. What no one knew at the time, of course, was that it would be the last formal live concert they would ever play. (The 1969 rooftop gig was an impromptu affair.) The Beatles had grown tired of performing live for numerous reasons - the wear and tear of travel, their inability to hear themselves as they performed due to crowd noise and equipment quality, and their inability play their latest material which required effects not yet available in a concert setting. The band had moved past the simple rock and roll tunes of their earliest days, and the album they released while on this tour was living proof of that fact. Revolver, released on August 8, 1966 in the US, showcased a new phase in the band’s development. Famed rock Robert Christgau called Revolver "twice as good and four times as startling as Rubber Soul, with sound effects, Oriental drones, jazz bands, transcendentalist lyrics, all kinds of rhythmic and harmonic surprises, and a filter that made John Lennon sound like God singing through a foghorn." Revolver is frequently cited as one of the top 10 albums of all time, with some sources ranking it above such works as Sgt. Pepper’s, Abbey Road and The White album. This high quality (for its time) audience recording captures the Beatles final concert in its entirety, a simple rock show recorded on a hand held cassette, a fitting contrast to the complex music using sophisticated equipment being produced by the band in the studio.

Steppenwolf - 1968-08-27 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

While 1967 was the Summer of Love, 1968 may have been America's darkest hour.  Violence plagued the country - riots in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, and of course, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.  Perhaps its not a surprise that music that year also had a darker tone. In 1967, a band called the Sparrows changed their name to Steppenwolf, inspired by the Hermann Hesse's novel of the same name. That novel portrays man's struggle between spirituality and aggression, similar to what was transpiring in America in 1968. About a year later, in June 1968, the band skyrocketed to fame when they released the single Born To Be Wild. The song contains the lyric "heavy metal thunder", which of course became the name for the more aggressive, thunderous genre of music that emerged as the 1960;s evolved into the 1970's. The song climbed to #2 on the Billboard singles charts, and over the years it has become one of rock’s legendary tunes. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Born To Be Wild at No. 129 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Since being included in the soundtrack for the movie Easy Rider in 1969, Born to Be Wild has been featured in dozens of other films, such as Coming Home, Borat, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Mr. Bean's Holiday, as well as countless TV shows, such as Married With Children and Miami Vice. This soundboard recording captures Steppenwolf at the Fillmore West, just 2 months after the release of Born To Be Wild, on August 27, 1968, 45 years ago today. In May, we featured the show that Deadheads have voted the best ever, namely May 8, 1977 from Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University. If any show can give that one a run for its money for the title of best ever, it’s this one from August 27, 1972, 41 years ago today! What started as a benefit show to raise money for a Creamery owned by Ken Kesey's brother, became one of the mythic performances of the Dead's entire career. It was a hot day on the Old Renaissance Fairgrounds in Veneta, Oregon, over 100 degrees, but that only seemed to fuel the band’s fire. The show includes landmark performances of Bird Song, Playing In The Band and Jack Straw, as well as maybe the best single version of Dark Star. Perhaps the Sunshine Daydream coda (from Sugar Magnolia) was never more appropriate than when played on this scorching day. In fact, a proposed movie of the show, which was never released, was to be titled Sunshine Daydream. According the sugarmtn.org, which provides a detailed history of Neil Young concerts and set lists, CSNY first performed together on August 16, 1969 in Chicago at the Auditorium Theater. They played 2 shows that night, then 2 days later, took the stage in front of 500,000 fans at Woodstock. A week later on August 25, they were 3000 miles from Woodstock, launching a 7 night stand at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Fleetwood Mac - 1977-08-25 - Las Vegas, NV (SBD or HQ Aud) 

The year 1977 belonged to Fleetwood Mac. On February 4, the band released Rumours, an album about and fueled by the emotional tensions within the band as long term relationships between John & Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood and his wife Jenny, all came to an end. Rumours went to #1 on the Billboard charts, won the Grammy for album of the year, garnered critical acclaim, and has sold over 19 million copies, making it one of the top 10 bestselling albums of all time. The album also helped launch another new rock trend - a glossy, polished, highly produced sound that in many ways became synonymous with the album/radio oriented rock of the decade. The album has also stood the test of time, being ranked #25 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while both Time Magazine and VH1 listed it among the 100 best albums ever. Jim Croce - 1973-08-25 - Schwenksville, PA (SBD)

On July 21, 1973, Jim Croce’s biggest hit, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts. When asked what had inspired him to write the song, Croce explained it was based on a guy he had met in the army. He was a tough guy who never had anyone tell him what to do. Croce’s army buddy went AWOL, but incredibly came back at the end of the month to try to collect his pay check. The military police put him in handcuffs and locked him away, putting an end to another tough guy, much the way Bad Bad Leroy Brown gets his comeuppance in the song. This soundboard recording captures Croce at Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 25, 1973, 40 years ago today, just around the time Bad Bad Leroy Brown had topped the charts. In the early 1960s, Atlantic City, once a bustling resort destination, was in economic decline as tourists took advantage of cheap airfares to visit other destinations such as Miami Beach and Las Vegas. Some clubs in Atlantic City, however, continued to draw crowds, in large part due to their connections with famous celebrities and illegal gambling. Once such venue was the 500 Club, owned by Paul "skinny” D'Amato, a good friend of both Frank Sinatra and the Mafia. The club’s front room had a 1000 seat concert hall while its backroom housed a casino. Allegedly, many of the stars who performed on stage in the front room finished the night gambling in the back. In any event, Sinatra, because of his connection to D’Amato, performed at the 500 Club on numerous occasions, including August 25, 1962, 51 years ago this very day. Bruce Springsteen - 1975-08-23 - Atlanta GA (SBD)

In August 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were booked to play ten shows at the Bottom Line night club, a tiny but legendary venue in the heart of New York City. At the time Springsteen was 2 weeks away from releasing his third album, Born to Run, a disc over a year in the making. His record label, Columbia was banking heavily on the disc, and planned a $250,000 promotional campaign featuring John Landau’s famous quote: "I saw rock 'n' roll's future—and its name is Bruce Springsteen." Columbia, also invited more than 1,000 industry insiders to the Bottom Line shows to see what fans of the Springsteen’s live performances had long known, namely that few acts could command a stage like Bruce and the E Street Band. The Bottom Line shows ere a defining moment in the band’s history. "It was our coming-out party," Springsteen said. "And some sort of transformation occurred over those five nights. We walked out of that place in a different place." This soundboard captures Bruce just about a week after those historic shows, on August 23, 1975, 38 years ago today.

John Lennon - 1972-08-22 - New York, NY (SBD)

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon, at the request of his friend journalist Geraldo Rivera, headlined 2 charity concerts to benefit the Willowbrook Home, a facility for learning disabled children. The event, held at Madison Square Garden was billed as “One To One”, and also featured Sha Na Na, Roberta Flack, and Stevie Wonder, New York Mayor John Lindsay declared the date, "One To One Day." Both concerts were filmed and recorded, with parts of the evening show broadcast on ABC Television while highlights from the afternoon set eventually were released on the 1986 album, Live In New York City. The shows, unfortunately, would be Lennon’s last full-length concerts following the breakup of The Beatles and his death in 1980. (He did, of course, sit in with Elton John for a few songs at a concert in 1974.). About a week prior to the shows, Lennon, wife Yoko, and his backing band, Elephant’s Memory, rehearsed for the One to One shows at SIR Studios in New York. This soundboard recording captures those sessions, on August 21 and 22, 1972, 4 decades ago yesterday and today. Jerry Garcia was on a roll in the summer of 1976, with the Dead having returned to touring just a few months earlier. Garcia was so glad to be back on the road that the moment the Dead took a break from playing live, he went right back on the road with his own band. This soundboard recording captures Garcia on August 22, 1976, 37 years ago today, at one of his favorite venues The Keystone in Berkeley.

The Doors - 1970-08-21 - Bakersfield, CA (SBD) 

On February 1, 1970, The Doors released their 5th studio album, Morrison Hotel, a return to the band’s roots after the experimental nature of their previous disc, Soft Parade. The band’s approach seemed to work, as Morrison Hotel reached #4 on the Billboard charts. The album also received positive critical reviews. For example, Dave Marsh, the editor of Creem magazine, wrote that the album was: "the most horrifying rock and roll I have ever heard. When they're good, they're simply unbeatable. I know this is the best record I've listened to ... so far.” While the album did not yield any top 40 singles, it did include tunes that would become staples of FM radio play, including Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun and Peace Frog. Rolling Stones - 1965-08-20 - London, UK (FM)

While The Beatles nay have gotten most of the attention tin the summer of 1965 thanks to their historic performance at Shea Stadium, their "rivals", the Rolling Stones, were having a quite a year as well. On August 20, 1965, 49 years ago today, the Rolling Stones taped their final BBC performance, 6 songs that would be broadcast in 2 shows on August 30 and September 18. The Stones had reached a point in their career where they were out growing these local BBC radio broadcasts. Satisfaction, released in May, had become their first number #1 single in the US and they would follow that with Get Off Of My Cloud, which also hit in top spot in September. The band was relying less on covers of R&B tunes and more on the song writing of Jagger and Richards. In fact, their next album, Aftermath, recorded in December 1965, would be their first that featured only compositions by the Glimmer Twins. The Beatles - 1965-08-18 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

Three days after their historic show at Shea Stadium, The Beatles were in Atlanta for the 3rd concert on their 1965 North American Tour. As in other cities, their arrival in Atlanta was more than just a concert. The city declared it Beatle Day. DJ Tony Taylor, who along with Paul Drew, served as emcees for the show, wrote that "The Beatles concert at Atlanta Stadium sticks in my mind as perhaps the greatest event I ever witnessed. The stadium bordered on hysteria. I can still see the faces of the girls, tears in their eyes as they hung over the wall and the policemen tried to restrain them. There seemed to be one continuous scream. It was super high pitched and unrelenting." Such was the power of Beatlemania as it swept across America. This soundboard recording captures every note that John, Paul, George and Ringo sang and played in Atlanta on August 18, 1965, 48 years ago today. For Atlanta. it was the first, and only time, The Beatles would perform in the city. The Beatles, as we know all too well, broke up in 1969. Fulton County Stadium, site of the concert, was demolished in 1997. All that remains are the memories of the 34,000 fans in attendance that night, fans who were among the lucky few to experience one of only 25 concerts the Beatles played in North America on their 1965 and 1966 stadium tours.

Blind Faith's one and only North American tour consisted of just 2 dozen dates between the opening show on July 12 at Madison Square Garden and the closing concert on August 24 in Honolulu. As most folks know, by the tour's conclusion, Clapton had already mentally left the band. He was spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie than with his Blind Faith band mates.  This soundboard recording capture Blind Faith during their only tour country, playing in Santa Barbara, CA on August 16, 1969, 44 years ago today.

We’ve posted numerous Beach Boys shows here at So Many Roads, but almost all of them are from later in the band’s career.  Quality Recordings from the 1960’s, especially the early part of the decade, are extremely hard to find.  Today, however, we bring you a soundboard recording from August 15, 1965, 4 dozen years ago today, from Santa Monica, CA.  Somewhat ironic that the Beach Boys played a concert same day The Beatles performed their legendary Shea Stadium show, which we'll post later today! The Beatles - 1965-08-15 - Shea Stadium, NY (SBD)

I grew up in Flushing, Queens, 1 train stop from Shea Stadium, former home of the New York Mets (though I'm a Yankee fan through and through - that was passed down from my dad!). I was 6 years old, just about to enter first grade, and way too young to understand what it meant when the Beatles took the stage at Shea on August 15, 1965, 4 dozen years ago today. Once again, the Beatles would make history. The show was the first on their 1965 summer tour, but more importantly, it was also the first-ever stadium rock concert. Beatlemania required a setting larger than any band before had ever needed. Rock & roll would never be the same after this show. Today's mega outdoor events, complete with video screens, giant stages, special effects and pyrotechnics are the legacy of the Beatles performance that August night in Queens. This soundboard recording, taken from the master tapes of the show, captures the entire 30 minute performance (a 1/2 hour!! -- today, I'm annoyed if a band plays less than 3 hours!), including the introduction by Ed Sullivan. A dozen songs, 30 minutes and the show was over, but its impact has lasted a life time.

On August 10, 1970, Elvis Presley launched his 2nd summer of shows at the Las Vegas Hilton, part of a 5 year deal that his manager, Colonel Tom Parker had negotiated in the wake of The King’s triumphant comeback in December 1968. Many of these shows were filmed for inclusion in the documentary film, Elvis: That's the Way It Is, which was released in November 1970. Over the next 3 days we’ll bring you 3 shows from that legendary 1970 run, when Elvis was still at the top of his game. During the summer of 1978, WMMS-FM in Cleveland celebrated its 10th anniversary with a multitude of concerts and special events. None was bigger, nor has begin more legendary with the passage of time, than Bruce Springsteen’s performance at the Agora Theater on August 9, 1978, 35 years ago today. Former WMMS program director John Gorman, who arrived at the station in 1989, was so fond of the show that he spent 6 years looking for a bootleg of it. Thanks to the help of a fellow Springsteen fan, he uncovered a copy in a record store in Atlanta. He paid $75 plus shipping to acquire the 3 disc set. You don’t need to go through all that trouble. Allman Brothers Band - 1972-08-06 - Hollywood CA (EX Aud)

On October 29, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band lost their co-founder, brother, guitarist, and spiritual leader in a tragic motorcycle accident. The death of Duane Allman could have crippled the band, but brother Greg, Dickie Betts, Berry Oakley Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and Berry Oakley soldiered on. They went back out on the road in 1972, with Oakley playing a major role in keeping the band together, both on and off the stage. Incredibly, Oakley, the new de facto leader of the band would meet the same fate as his predecessor. He also died in a motorcycle accident, in November 1972, just over a year after Duane, at an intersection 3 blocks from where the guitarist perished. Even that tragedy, however, could not stop the Allmans. In 1973 they who once again rose from the ashes, releasing the single Ramblin’ Man which went all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts. This high quality audience recording captures the band on August 6, 1972, 41 years ago today, at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Download this one to hear the Allmans on their first tour without Duane, which, unfortunately, would also be their last with Berry Oakley.

Jefferson Airplane - 1967-08-05 - Toronto (SBD)

1967 - It was billed as the summer of love. In the wake of the Monterrey Pop Festival in June 1967, the flower power generation and psychedelic rock music, both of which had become synonymous with San Francisco, were firmly embedded in the public consciousness. On July 7, Time Magazine featured a cover story entitled, The Hippies: The Philosophy of a Subculture. It is estimated that around 100,000 people traveled to San Francisco in the summer of 1967. The media was right behind them, casting a spotlight on the Haight-Ashbury district. Albums such as Sgt. Pepper's by the Beatles and Surrealistic Pillow from San Francisco's own Jefferson Airplane, with their vivid imagery and allusions to drug use, climbed to the top of the Billboard charts. Ever the sharp eyed promoter, Bill Graham took the Airplane and Grateful Dead on tour across the US and into Canada, billing the shows as "Bill Graham Presents The San Francisco Scene" in order to capitalize on the attention that the city of the Golden Gate Bridge had been receiving. This soundboard recording captures the Jefferson Airplane during that tour, on August 5, 1967, 46 years ago today, in Toronto.
