1970s - #2: Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and the Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little known singer and songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - songwriting, arrangements, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. Over the next 5 years, they would sell over 16 million records, establishing themselves as the best selling duo of the 1970s, a record they held until surpasse by Hall & Oates later in the decade.  In 1976, they made the decision to pursue solo careers, but played one last tour before they went their separate ways.  This soundboard recording captures them during that Farwell Tour, in Daly City,  on April 4, 1976, 49 years ago today.

L&M 1972 - #2: As promised, here’s the 2nd half of our Same Tour Different show entry featuring Loggins & Messina in 1972. This one’s a soundboard recording from June 30, 1972, 43 years ago today. By the way - 2 notes for the Dead Heads out there. First, this is Betty Cantor soundboard, whose “Betty Board” tapes of the Dead are the stuff of legends. Second, Loggins plays a slowed down version of Friend of The Devil, which is much different than the bluegrass pace the Dead used when they recorded the track for the album American Beauty. Legend has it that Garcia heard this version and liked it so much that Dead adopted the slower tempo for their live performances of the tune!

L&M 1972 - #1: - Today, we bring you Loggins & Messina from the Shaefer Music Festival in New York City on June 25, 1972, 43 years ago today. The Schaefer Music Festival ran summers from 1968 to 1976 at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park. The festival had originated in 1966 and was sponsored that year and the following one by Rheingold. Dr. Pepper took over sponsorship in 1977. In 1981, the festival moved to Pier 84, next to where the Intrepid is docked. Miller took over sponsorship in 1983 until the series ended in 1988. During that 20 year span, some of the biggest names in rock played the summer series, including Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Band, Van Morrison, The Eagles, and CSN, just to name a few. In the early days, ticket prices ranged from $1 to $3, making it one of the best bargains in rock. Download this FM broadcast of L&M, and remember a simpler and far less expensive time! Mike Martin of Flying M Productions came across a vinyl copy of that promo disc, and digitally re-mastered it, removing countless pops and clicks. The resulting soundboard recording captures the birth of Loggins and Messina, including such classics as Danny's Song, House At Pooh Corner. Your Mama Don't Dance and Vahevalla. Jim Messina was born in California, spent time in Texas, after his parents divorced, but eventually found his way back to his native state. Messina, formerly of Poco and Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Loggins, a little-known singer/songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - in terms of songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins.
