1970s - #6: One of the most successful members of the Motown family, Smokey Robinson would produce 26 top forty hits with the Miracles between 1960 and 1970, such as You've Really Got a Hold on Me, I Second That Emotion, Tears of a Clown, Ooo Baby Baby, Going to a Go-Go and The Tracks of My Tears. He would also pen countless hits for other Motown artists, including My Guy for Mary Wells; The Way You Do The Things You Do, My Girl and Get Ready for The Temptations; and I'll Be Doggone and Ain't That Peculiar for Marvin Gaye. He was a member of the 2nd orck & Roll Hall Of Fame class when he was inducted in 1987.  This soundboard recording captures Smokey on tour in Germany on October 21, 1977, 47 years ago today, in supoort of the 2 albums he released that year, Deep In My Soul and the Big Time soundtrack.

1987 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1987-01-21 - New York, NY (SBD)

The 2nd Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1987 featured a gigantic list of inductees who spanned the gamut from 1950's rock to blues to soul and more. Aretha Franklin became the first women inducted, though sadly the Queen Of Soul did not attend. BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, 3 blues legends, took their rightful place in the hall as did soulful legends Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson. Early legends such as Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley, also were part of the class of 1987. Musical moments included Orbison dueting with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Woman, Carl Perkins backed by Keith Richards and BB King on Blue Suede Shoes, and Smokey Robinson leading an all star jam on Going To A Go Go.

Smokey Robinson entered the Rock Hall of Fame in 1987, the largest class in the institution’s history. Other inductees that year included Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Big Joe Turner, Bill Haley, Bo Diddley, Carl Perkins, Clyde McPhatter, Eddie Cochran, Jackie Wilson, The Coasters, Marvin Gaye, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison and Muddy Waters. When Smokey strode to the podium to make his acceptance speech, the audience spontaneously sang “ooh baby baby”, serenading the legend with his own tune. This soundboard recording captures Smokey in Baltimore just a year before his induction, on September 20, 1986, 29 years ago today.
