Grateful Dead - 1977-12-31 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)
While Santana and Eddie Money were rocking the Cow Palace on the outskirts of San Francisco, back in the heart of The City By The Bay, The Grateful Dead were on stage for the first set of their show on December 31, 1977, 36 years ago today at Winterland. The crowd at Winterland had all been handed flyers that read "Good things come to those who wait. New Year's Eve will start at 12:30 tonight.” Turns out that legendary promoter Bill Graham was doing double duty that night, handling both the Santana/Money show and the Dead’s concert. The Dead normally kicked off the 2nd set of their New Year Eve shows at midnight, with Graham making an appearance during the countdown to the new year in some outlandish costume. For example, in 1976 he appeared out of an hour glass, while in 1978 he would fly in on a giant marijuana joint! In order to accommodate Graham appearing in the 1977 festivities - he would fly in on a motorcycle - midnight at Winterland was pushed back a half hour! For the Dead, the concert marked the final show of what many Deadheads, myself included, believe was the band’s finest year. For the last 2 songs before the encore, the Dead broke out 2 of their most famous covers, versions of Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away and Chuck Berry’s Around and Around. Two songs later, the Dead’s last show of the legendary year that was 1977 was history. And two hours from now, with our New Year’s celebration now done, we’ll bid goodbye to 2013.
