I've seen Robert Hunter 3 times in concert, each time leading in for his song writing partner, the one and only Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Is he my favorite artist? Well, to be honest, the answer is no. There is something compelling, however, about hearing Hunter's own take on the songs that have become Grateful Dead standards. His phrasing is often so different from Garcia's that you think you are listening to an entirely different song!

Felix Cavaliere - 1993-07-29 - Brooklyn NY (SBD)

Look at the list of concerts that I've attended which is posted on this blog, and you won't see Felix Cavaliere's name anywhere.  That's because he was a surprise, special guest at the October 1986 Crackdown on Crack Concert at Madison Square Garden.  Felix joined the Allman Brothers on stage for a very appropriate rendition of Good Lovin'!

After The Rascals disbanded in 1972, Felix Cavaliere, who sang lead vocals on some of their biggest hits, including Good Lovin', Groovin', A Girl Like You, A Beautiful Morning, and People Got to Be Free, launched his solo career. Although he released 4 albums between 1974 and 1979, none achieved the level of success he had attained with the Rascals. Almost 15 years passed before Cavaliere recorded another album, the 1994 release Dreams In Motion which included the tune Big Surprise, on which his 3 daughters, Christina, Laura and Aria sing backup. While the album was not a huge hit, it did mark the start of a brief comeback for Cavaliere. In 1995, he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band, while in 1997 he and his fellow Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This soundboard recording captures Felix right before the release of Dreams In Motion on July 29, 1993, 23 years ago today, in Brooklyn NY. The set list includes the title track from his then forthcoming album, but most importantly includes all his classics from his days with the Rasacals!

Bob Dylan - 1999-07-26 - New York, NY (SBD)

On July 12, 1987, I'd see Bob Dylan at Giants Stadium where he played a set backed by The Grateful Dead, one of 6 such historic shows that summer.  The Dead, bt the way, played 2 sets prior to serving as Bob's backing band, making it a truly momentous show. Then,  on October 10, 1989, I saw Bob Dylan headline a show at The Beacon Theater, the start of a run on 6 concerts in 7 days. The next night I would see the Stones at Shea Stadium and then I would see the Grateful Dead at the Brendan Byrne Arena on October 12, 14, 15 and 16. I'd see Dylan on 1 other occasion, on June 18, 1995, at Giant Stadium,when he led in for The Dead, just weeks before Jerry Garcia would pass away.

I've only seen Sting solo once, on February 15,1991. The tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. A week later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and its been the best years of my life! W

Two years after that show, Sting released his 4th solo album, just 1 less than he had produced during his entire tenure with The Police. That adisc, Ten Summoner’s Tales, went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This FM broadcast captures him in Italy, on July 25, 1993, 23 years ago today.

I've seen Willie Nelson live on one occasion, in September 1978 when he led in for the Grateful Dead. Actually, it was supposed to be Waylon Jennings and Willie, but the former no showed the concert. Willie didn't let that stop him from getting us fired up for the main event!

This soundboard recording captures Willie on July 25,1999, 17 years ago today at Woodstock 99. the 30th anniversary of the ;legendary concert.  Unfortunately, the festival was marred by violence, a far cry from the original festival's motto of  3 days of peace and music.

I saw Don Henley live once, in August 1985 at Pier 84 in New York, with Katrina & The Waves leading in. Henley was on tour in support of the album Building The Perfect Beast, which spawned the top 5 single, The Boys Of Summer. The video for that tune won 4 awards at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video Of The Year.

Bruce Hornsby - 1994-07-23 - Toledo OH (SBD)

The first time I saw Bruce Hornsby was May 1987 in Laguna Seca, CA, backed by The Range and leading in for the Grateful Dead. The next time I saw him live was in September 1990 as a member of the Dead, taking over the keyboards, along with Vince Welnick, for Brent Mydland, who had died of an overdose.  I'd see Hornsby with the Dead several more times in 1990 and 1991. Between 1993 and 2004, I'd see Hornsby solo and with the Noisemakers on 4 occasions, and have tickets to see him again in September in Morristown.

My long strange trip with the Grateful Dead began on September 3, 1977, tn Englishtown, the largest concert in NJ history, during what many believe was the Dead's finest year of touring. The show so hot (as was the day - temperature near 100 degrees cooking the 150,000 of us in attendance) that it was later released as part of the Dick's Picks series.

In honor of my the first decades in which I saw the Dead, here's a soundboard recording of the band in Seattle on July 22, 1972, 44 years ago today.  By the way, the night before, July 21, was released as part of the Dead's Digital Download series, so you know the band was in top form around this time.

I've seen Bob Weir solo just once, in July 1992 at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, a concert arena set up in the parking lot of Giants Stadium.  Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a buck. Bruce Cockburn and Michelle Shocked led in for Weir and joined him during the encore of The Weight.

As mentioned in my Nick Lowe post, I've seen Tom Petty once in concert, in April 1983 at the Bryne Area in New Jersey.  Tom played Hang On Sloopy., one of the most unexpected cover tunes I've ever heard any band play.

This FM broadcast captures Petty near the start of his career, in Boston on July 16, 1978, 28 years ago today. By the way, Meg Griffin, nicknamed Meg-less, was one of the DJ's at the legendary New York radio station, WNEW_FM -- "Where Rock Lives."

Grateful Dead - 1990-07-14 - Foxboro, MA (SBD)

If you've been a regular reader of this blog, you know that I've seen the Grateful Dead more times than I can count. I'm not even going to try and give you any info on that in these posts,  Instead, the June to September installments of What A Long Strange Trip It's Been will give you plenty of highlights form those shows, as well as every other concert I've attended.

As I mentioned in my post announcing this month's theme. to celebrate all the Dead concerts I've been to, we will bring you 1 or more posts from each decade that I saw a show - the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Here's part one of our 1990s entry this month, taken from the period 1989 to 1991 which featured some of the Dead’s best shows after Jerry Garcia’s return from a near fatal coma. This soundboard recording captures the band on  July 14, 1990, 26 years ago today, in Foxboro. This one has a great setlist, including a One More Saturday Night to end the first set and a double encore of The Last Time > We Bid You Goodnight! While I've seen CSN on 6 occasions, the only time I've seen the 3 along with sometime partner Neil Young was in April 2000 during the quartet;s first tour in 25 years.  It was worth the wait!

This soundboard recording captures CSNY during that  infamous 1974 tour that led to that quarter century separation, on July 13, 1974, 42 years ago today, in Oakland CA. As with all the 1974 shows, this one is a mammoth affair, featuring 2 electric sets and an acoustic one, encompassing 34 songs!

Van Morrison - 1984-07-11 - Montreux, Switzerland (FM)

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration.  Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker.  With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun.  In any event, my wife and I are hoping that one day will get to see him play Some One Like You, as that's our wedding song

Today's post goes bcck two year before the first time I saw Van the Man in 1986. The Montreux Jazz Festival is the 2nd largest annual event of its kind, after Canada's Montreal International Jazz Festival. In the 1980s, the festival expanded in both size and scope, hosting more attendees and including artists from a host of different musical genres. Mr. Morrison has been something of a regular at the festival, with at least 4 soundboard or FM recordings from 4 different years circulating. Today, we’ll bring you an FM broadcast of his 1984 appearance, from July 11, 1984, 32 years ago today.

Elton John - 2015-07-11-  Lucca, Italy (FM)

My first concert, Elton John at Madison Square Garden on August 15, 1976, 40 years ago this summer, was the inspiration for our theme this month and next, featuring band's I've seen live, and a 4 part What A Long Strange Trip Its been series with some recollections of every show I've attended. Since that first show, I've seem Elton 4 more times, all at MSG: in October 1992; in October 1999, a solo show; in September 2005, the 30th anniversary of Captain Fantastic; and in March 2007, his 60th birthday concert.

This FM broadcast captures Elton just a year ago today, in Italy on July 11, 2015.

U2 - 2001-07-10 - Stockholm, Sweden (SBD/ALD)

I've seen U2 twice - once in August 1992 during the ZooTV tour and then again in October 2001, after the tragedy on 9-11, when the band's emotional tribute to the victims provided a much needed catharsis for us all.

This ALD recording captures the band on the early part of the Elevation tour, before the horror, when the band was celebrating their incredible new albumt, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11. This soundboard, taken from Bono's earpiece, captures U2 during the Elevation Tour on July 10, 2001, 15 years ago today, in Stockholm.
