Johnny Cash - 1986-03-31 - London, UK (SBD)

The 1980's were a difficult period for the Man in Black.  His impact on the Country Music charts waned, his long time record company, Columbia, stopped marketing his work, he had a relapse of drug addiction and underwent double bypass heart surgery.  He was so frustrated with Columbia that he actually recorded a song called Chicken in Black, about his brain being transplanted into a chicken.  That tune helped sever the relationship between Cash and Columbia.  Despite his troubles, Cash did have some positive moments during the decade. In 1986, he teamed with Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins on the album Class of '55.  He continued to tour successfully, with the Highwayman early in the decade, and later, with wife June Carter and the Carter family.  In keeping with our guest star theme of the month, this soundboard recording from March 31, 1986, 25 years ago today, captures Cash with wife June and the Carter Family, live at Wembley Arena in London. Our last post of the month somewhat fits with our March theme of guest appearances. In 1998, Elton John and Billy Joel launched their 2nd Face To Face Tour, the first having come 4 years earlier in 1994. During those shows, the 2 artists played their own songs, each other's songs and performed duets. For example, at their concert in Tokyo, on March 31, 1998, 14 years ago, today, Elton opened with Your Song, with Billy Joel making a guest appearance to help with the vocals. Billy closed the night with Piano Man, with Elton sitting in to provide back up. Even more interesting than the guest spots, is to hear them sing each other’s music, as when Elton sing Joel’s Uptown Girl and Billy takes a turn at Elton’s Candle In The Wind. Grateful Dead - 1980-03-30 - Capitol Theatre NJ (SBD)

In keeping with our themes for march, here's a post that features both the Grateful Dead and a guest star.  This one goes back to my days in college when I served as the business manager of the school newspaper. I decided to use that lofty position to help me pursue my passion for rock and roll. We launched an Arts and Entertainment issue that we would distribute to over 100,000 college students in the NY/NJ area. Bigger circulation meant we could reach out to folks like WNEW-FM and Monarch Entertainment (John Scher's company and owners of the Capitol Theatre) to buy ad space. And when we talked to Monarch about ads, we also talked to them about tickets to concerts! We negotiated getting 4 tickets, including photographer passes, to every show Scher promoted in return for advertising and writing reviews about each. The first show just happened to be the Grateful Dead at the Capitol on March 30, 1980, 32 years ago this very day. I went with my 3 roomies. My job was to write the review, one of my room mates was the photographer (see pictures below!) and the other 2 guys, well they just went along for the free tickets. To be honest, it wasn't the best Dead show, I've seen, though the first half of the 2nd set had its moments. Garcia was actually pretty somber and unemotional the whole night. The big highlight, though, was the encore, when the late, great John Belushi cartwheeled his way on stage to join the band for U.S Blues. And when he did, Jerry smiled for the first time all night. In the Grateful Dead’s history after Jerry Garcia emerged from his 1986 coma, the most fun period was probably 1987, as every show was a celebration of life regained. I attended 8 Dead shows that year, including my only concert in California on May 10, the day after the Touch of Gray video was filmed; the July 12 concert with Bob Dylan at Giants Stadium; and my favorite all time show, on September 18, at Madison Square Garden. All 3 are posted on this blog along with several other shows from that year. That said, the band probably hit its performing peak in that era about 2 years later, from the summer of 1989 through the fall of 1991. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990; the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; and the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. A year later, in fall of 1991, this amazing 2 ½ year run culminated with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area, including a tribute show on November 3 to mourn the death of Bill Graham. The 1991 MSG shows included a concert on September 10 with Branford Marsalis sitting in with the Dead, a show previously posted on this blog. That was not Branford’s first appearance, however, with the band. On March 29, 1990, 22 years ago today, Branford joined the Dead at the middle show of 3 nights at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY. Marsalis not only plays on Bird Song in the first set, but also joins the band for the entire second set, which kicks off with Eyes of The World, a song rarely played to open a set. Barnnford’s improvisational skills are on display throughout the night, especially as he and Jerry Garcia explore the far reaches of space during Dark Star. This soundboard recording captures every note of a show Deadbase ranks as the best of 1990. By the way, the show also fits in with both themes for March here at So Many Roads – it’s a Grateful Dead post and it features a special guest appearance!

Roger Waters - 1985-03-28 -  Radio City Music Hall, NY (FM)

In 1984, Roger Waters, while in the midst of a power struggle with David Gilmour over the creative direction of Pink Floyd, launched his solo career. It did not get off to a good start to say the least. He released his first solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking on April 30, 1984. The album dealt with the benefits and downsides of monogamy and family life vs. in Water’s words, pursuing the call of the wild. Despite guest appearances by Eric Clapton and David Sanborn, the album flopped. Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder described the disc as a "strangely static, faintly hideous record." Rogers toured Europe in support of the record, but ticket sales were weak. The set list was divided into 2 parts, with the first half consisting of Pink Floyd songs and the second half featuring the The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album played in its entirety. The North American leg of the tour in early 1985 featured just 10 shows in 6 cities. His record label, CBS, refused to support the tour because they were still holding out hopes, in vain, for another Pink Floyd album. Despite that, the North American shows went far better than their European predecessors. This FM Broadcast from March 25, 1985, 27 years ago today, captures Waters one of those shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Crosby, Nash & Young – 1972-03-26 – San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Yet another concert that fits with March’s theme of guest appearances. On March 26, 1972, 40 years ago today, David Crosby and Graham Nash, always ready to lend a hand to help a worthy cause, headlined the This Sheriff's Benefit Concert to help raise awareness of prisoner issues. The show also featured local groups Earth Rise and Stoneground, as well as Elvin Bishop. Crosby & Nash had just finished recording their self titled debut album, which included such songs as Southbound Train, And So It Goes and Immigration Man. Nash has also recently recorded a solo disc, Songs For Beginners, which featured such classic tunes as Military Madness and Chicago. Three songs into the show, Neil Young joined Crosby and Nash, a wonderful surprise as the 3 had not performed together since CSNY finished touring in 1970. It would be another 2 years before the foursome would reunite for a memorable, but turbulent, tour in 1974. In the interim, fans had to be thankful for unannounced reunions such as this one. SNACK – 1975-03-23 – San Francisco, CA (FM)

This post fits with both our themes this month as it not only includes the Grateful Dead, but also a very special guest appearance. In 1975, legendary promoter Bill Graham, known for his shows at venues such as Winterland and The Fillmores, undertook his first large-scale outdoor stadium concert. On March 23, 1975, 37 years ago today, he presented the SNACK benefit concert at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. SNACK was an an acronym for Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks. At the time, budget cuts had almost completely wiped out all after school activities in San Francisco’s public school system. Graham went to bat for the kids, and recruited a host of rock legends to help him. Billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends, The Grateful Dead opened the show, one of only 4 concerts they played that year. Tower Of Power, Santana, The Doobie Brothers, Jefferson Starship and Joan Baez also were also on the bill. The show closed with a set from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, backed by members of the Band. Not sure if Neil was sitting in with Bob and The Band, or the other way around, but either way, this FM broadcast of the show is a must have for your collection.

Eric Clapton - 1999-03-15 - New York, NY (SBD)

On a night when Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Curtis Mayfield, Del Shannon, Dusty Springfield and The Staple Singers were inducted into a the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Eric Clapton did what he always does, put his stardom aside to play the consummate supporting role. During what Rolling Stone magazine said "was the most emotionally moving, musically satisfying night the Hall has ever seen," EC was omnipresent yet invisible, always on stage, yet never stealing the limelight.  He and D'Angelo paid tribute to Curtis Mayfield on  I’ve Been Trying and Early In The Morning.  He backed Bonnie Rait on Blue Suede Shoes; Rait, Joel and Dion on What I’d Say; and then Bono and Bruce on People Get Ready. To cap it all off, he and his trusty Fender were on stage when Sir Paul McCartney closed the night with a moving rendition of Let It Be. This soundboard recording captures all those historic performances from March 15, 1999, 13 years ago today.  By the way - maybe the Hall of Fame folks took notice because next year they made Clapton the only 3 time inductee into the institution, recognizing his solo career after previously inducting him as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream.

The Eagles – 1974-03-14 – New York, NY (SBD)

Our second post today captures the Eagles on March 14, 1974, 38 years ago today, with special guests Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne, performing on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Kirshner, who originally served as the executive producer for ABC’s In Concert series, left that show in 1973 to start his own TV program. Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert debuted on September 27, 1973, featuring the Rolling Stones, their first appearance on American TV in more than four years. Rock Concert was an innovative show for its time, as it featured bands performing live, as compared to rehearsed, often lip-synced performances that were the staple of earlier television shows like Shindig and American Bandstand. Kirshner was able to get a significant number of rock’s royalty to appear on Rock Concert, including The Allman Brothers, George Harrison, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Santana, Fleetwood Mac and Steveie Wonder, just to name a few. This soundboard recording features one of the best shows of the series, with Eagles, Ronstadt and Brown performing 15 classic tunes. First up, we go back 51 years ago today, to March 14, 1961, where we catch the Johnny Cash Show in Houston. In the early 1960’s, Cash, backed by the Tennessee Three, would tour the US accompanied by a host of other country western artists. This concert also features Johnny Western, Gordon Terry, Claude Gray, and Rose Maddox, as well legends Roger Miller and George Jones before they were famous! This soundboard recording captures the entire performance from Johnny Western’s opening number to Johnny Cash’s concluding set. This one is an historic treasure and a must have for your collection.

Paul Simon – 1992-03-04 – Queens, NY (SBD) 

We’ve posted quite a lot of Simon & Garfunkel on this blog, but this marks our first concert from Mr. Simon as a solo artist. This soundboard recording captures Simon on March 4, 1992, 20 years ago today at the Kauffman Studios in Astoria, Queens taping an episode of MTv’s Unplugged. While Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. While Paul Simon’s appearance on Unplugged didn’t quite generate the same type of buzz, it was the first episode aired globally within a 24 hour time frame. It also was never released officially, so we can post it on So Many Roads! Here’s another post in keeping with our March theme of guest stars. This soundboard recording captures Hot Tuna on March 3, 1988, 2 dozen years ago today in San Francisco at a show that would become the launching pad for the 1989 Jefferson Airplane reunion! In 1986, Jack Cassady and Jorma Kaukonen reformed Hot Tuna after a 3 year layoff. Whereas their 1983 reunion tour focused on newer material with a heavy metal edge to it, much to their fan base’s chagrin, the 1986 version of Hot Tuna concentrated on their well known acoustic material. Paul Kantner joined the band in 1987 and 1988 adding some old Jefferson Airplane songs to the set list. At this show, Grace Slick joined in the fun, as did Papa John Creach and Will Scarlet. Within a year, the 5 of the 6 original members of Jefferson Airplane - Grace, Jorma, Jack, Paul and even Marty Balin, with Spencer Dryden being the only missing link due to some animosity between him and Kanter – had reformed for an album and a tour. In addition to Simon and Garfunkel, the March 1, 1993 Children’s Health Fund (CHF) benefit, which took place 19 years ago today, also featured comedian Steve Martin and the one and only Neil Young. This show was yet another example of Neil’s long time commitment to using the power of rock and roll to address social issues. Whether writing songs to protest the Vietnam War, the police brutality at Kent State, or the invasion of Iraq, or hosting concerts to support charitable causes such as his own Live Aid, Farm Aid and his own Bridge School, Neil has also used the rock stage as a pulpit to speak out on against injustice and for those less fortunate. Neil plays an excellent acoustic set, during which S&G join him for the final 2 songs. In 1987, Paul Simon and Irwin Redlener, MD co-founded the Children’s Health Fund (CHF) to provide health care to homeless children. Their efforts began in New York, and over the years, expanded across the US. In 1993, Simon reunited with former partner Art Garfunkel for the first time in almost a decade to play a benefit concert to help launch CHF in Los Angeles. This high quality audience recording captures their historic reunion for a very worthy cause on March 1, 1993, 19 years ago today.
