When The Pretenders played their  second of 2 shows that month in New York’s Central Park on August 9, 1980, 32 years ago today, as captured in this FM brodcast, their debut album had already been met by overwhelming commercial and critical success. The disc reached #1 on the charts in the UK and climbed to #9 on The Billboard charts in the US. Famed rock critic Robert Christgau gave the disc an A- rating while Rolling Stone wrote that the album “stands as some of the freshest, most provocative music around right now.”

On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first studio disc in over 3 years.  The disc also marked a reconciliation between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who had been at odds over the future of the band. The album received strong critical reviews and climbed to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US and to #2 in the UK.  The single Mixed Emotions, which addressed the woes between Mick and Keith, went to #5 on the Billboard charts.  On August 31 at Veterans Stadium in  Philadelphia, the Stones launched a tour in support of the album,  which would eventually stretch to 115 dates on 3 continents. Three days prior to the start of the tour, on August 28, 1989, 23 years ago today, the Stones rehearsed at JFK Stadium, also in Philadelphia.  Download this one to hear the Stones warm up for the first North American tour in 7 years!

Bruce Hornsby - 1988-08-27 - Orlando, FL (FM)

In May 1988, Bruce Hornsby released Scenes From The Southside,the follow up to his stunning debut album, The Way it Is. On this disc, Hornsby reaches into his Virginia roots for inspiration, with lyrics that conjured up images of small town Americana, all supported by virtuoso piano performances. The album went platinum, and critics noted that songs on the disc had more spacious musical arrangements, allowing for more expressive solos from Hornsby. The single,The Valley Road, would become his third Top 10 hit, peaking at number 5.  Huey Lewis and The News would cover another song from the album, Jacob's Ladder, and take it to number #1.  The Show Goes On would be featured in the Ron Howard movie, Backdraft, giving Hornsby additional national exposure. This FM broadcast captures Hornsby on tour in support of Scences From The Souuthside on August 27, 1988, 2 dozen years ago today. September's Theme At So Many Roads

In the immortal words of Frank Sinatra, September at So Many Roads will be all about New York, New York.  Of our 30 or so September posts, over 20 will feature concerts at such famous New York City venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Beacon Theater, The Palladium, Central Park and The Bottom Line, just to name a few. We'll also venture just outside the city's borders, to highlight performances at such legendary Long Island venues as the Calderone Concert Hall, Jones Beach and Stonybrook, as well as at some nearby New Jersey locations such as the Capitol Theatre and the Garden State Arts Center.  As I live in the area, I've been lucky enough to attend many of the concerts we'll post, and I've been to almost every one of the venues we'll highlight.  A good number of the shows we post will feature the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby, 2 of my favorite artists, who often visited New York in September.

Bruce Springsteen - 1981-08-24 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD) 

Bruce Springsteen’s 1980/1981 River Tour is a study in contrasts, perhaps reflecting the nature of the album itself. The 2 record set was a mix of up tempo rockers such as Out In The Street and dark, haunting tunes such as the title track. Bruce described the album by saying "life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them". His live performances also reflected this dichotomy. On the one hand, most shows had set lists over 30 songs long and often lasted 4 hours, cementing Bruce’s reputation for marathon performances. On the other hand, this tour is often forgotten when discussing Springsteen’s legacy, as it came in between the legendary 1978 Darkness Tour and the monumental Born In The USA run of shows. During the River tour, Bruce played to larger audiences than in the past, and even ventured to Europe where he began to build a new following. Yet, even as more people saw him live, the performances became less accessible to those without tickets, as the tour produced no live radio broadcasts, no live albums, and no concert videos. This is one of the rare soundboard recordings from that tour, from August 24, 1981, 31 years ago today.

Elvis Costello - 1980-08-23 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

Held on August 23, 1980, 33 years ago today, the Heatwave Festival was officially billed and promoted as “The 1980s Big Beat Rock and Roll Party”. In the history books, however, its often called the New Wave or Punk Woodstock, and with good reason. The festival drew over 85,000 fans, and the crowd swelled to over 100,000 when, at 5 pm, the promoter allowed Dan Akroyd to invite anyone listening on the radio to attend for free!  The festival featured many of the leading lights of the new wave/punk movement, including the Talking Heads, B52s, Rockpile, he Pretenders and Elvis Costello, This soundboard recording capture’s Costello’s set at Heatwave, his only concert in North America that year.   Dowload this one, then come back later today for The Pretenders set.

The 1980's were a difficult period for the Man in Black. His impact on the Country Music charts waned, his long time record company, Columbia, stopped marketing his work, he had a relapse of drug addiction and underwent double bypass heart surgery. He was so frustrated with Columbia that he actually recorded a song called Chicken in Black, about his brain being transplanted into a chicken. That tune helped sever the relationship between Cash and Columbia. Despite his troubles, Cash did have some positive moments during the decade. In 1986, he teamed with Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins on the album Class of '55. He continued to tour successfully, with the Highwayman early in the decade, and later, with wife June Carter and the Carter family. This FM Broadcast captures the Man in Black in Poland on August 22, 1987, 2 dozen years go today. In August 1984, just 2 months after the release of the Born In The USA album, Bruce Springsteen sold out ten nights at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ, an unheard of number of shows for a single run at a venue. I took my sister, a huge fan of Bruce, to this show, on August 20, 1984, 28 years ago this very day, today, just a few weeks after her 18th birthday. We scalped tickets from an old guy in a funny hat and shorts on a street corner in Chelsea in Manhattan. I hadn't seen Springsteen since November 1, 1978 when he played at Jadwin Gym on the campus of Princeton University, where I was a student at the time (And that's a story and show for another post). The 6 year wait was well worth it. My sister, who has now seen Bruce maybe more times than I've seen the Grateful Dead, will tell you that Springsteen fans often refer to this as "The Last Great Show". And what a show it was - featuring guest appearances by the Miami Horns and Little Steven, a 30 plus song set list, and one of only two known performances of Drift Away. While no soundboard from this show is available, we do have this excellent audience recording which captures Bruce and the E Street Band at their peak. Don't miss it!

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash for the first time in 1978, when the band was riding high after the release of the CSN album a year earlier.  That disc climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, Just A Song Before I Go, had reached the #7 spot.  By the time I saw the band again in 1985, the picture was very different.  CSN had not released a studio album in 3 years, since Daylight Again in 1982.  Crosby had been arrested several times on drug and weapons charges.  Yet, despite their troubles, the trio seemed to find a way to tour every summer, taking refuge on stage from their issues.  In addition to the 1985 concert, I would see CSN in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1992 (more on that last show later this month). Here’s a HQ audience tape from that period, a concert Wyoming, MI on August 20, 1987, a quarter century ago today. Download this one to learn, as I did back then, that while CSN might no longer be a force in the studio, they could still produce majestic harmonies live in concert.

Built in 1903, The William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre, known simply as the Greek Theatre, is an 8,500 seat amphitheater owned and operated by the University of California, Berkeley.  The venue should not be confused with the similarly named facility located near Los Angeles. In its more than 100 year history, Berkeley’s Greek Theatre has hosted Shakespearean plays, college football rallies, political and religious leaders such as Corazon Aquino and the Dalai Lama, comedians such as Bill Cosby, and of course, more than its fair share of musical acts.  One of the bands who frequented the Greek most often was San Francisco’s own Grateful Dead. The band played the venue 29 times between 1967 and 1989, with most of those concerts in the decade of the 1980s, including this show on August 19, 1989, 23 years ago today.  Download this one to hear the last time the Dead ever played at this Berkeley landmark.

In August 1983, The Police just might have been the biggest rock act in the world. Two months earlier, on June 1, The Police released the album Synchronicity, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts, selling 8 million copies. The disc yielded 4 top 20 singles - Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breath You Take, which like the album, climbed all the way to #1. When the band toured in 1983/84 in support of Synchronicity, they found they could fill 50,000 seat stadiums such as Shea in New York, the same venue the Beatles had filled some 2 decades prior. This HQ audience recording captures that performance at Shea band on August 18, 1983, 29 years ago today.

Greg Kihn - 1981-08-12 - The Ritz, NY (FM) 

When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, and Nick Lowe, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new artist became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn was sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. This FM broadcast captures Kihn at the height of his success at the Ritz in NY on August 12, 1981, 31 years ago today. .

In the spring of 1986, Bob Weir rejoined his old pal Matthew Kelly’s band Kingfish for a half dozen or so shows in New York and California. Later that summer, with the Grateful Dead on hiatus in the wake of Jerry Garcia’s recovery from a diabetic coma, Weir again joined up with Kingfish for another short tour. This soundboard captures Weir and Kingfish on the 2nd night of that summer tour, on August 10, 1986, 26 years ago today, in Denver. Download this one to hear how Bobby kept busy while Jerry was recovering.

Thanks to all the encouraging comments I received today, I'm going to try to keep this place running.  I'm simply going to spread the uploads among a host of sites, and this way, if some get taken down, it won't cripple the whole place.

I know that means some shows many wind up on a site that downloads slowly for some of you.  I apologize in advance for that, but I simply don't have the time to upload every show to a multitude of sites. I have a life beyond this blog, and already probably spend too much time on this site.

Enjoy the tunes while we can, be patient if a download takes time, and remember that this could all end before any of us want it to if we have more debacles like megaupload, fileserve and mediafire.

The Pretenders - 1980-08-09 - New York, NY (FM) 

When The Pretenders played their first of 2 shows that month in New York’s Central Park on August 9, 1980, 32 years ago today, as captured in this FM brodcast, their debut album had already been met by overwhelming commercial and critical success. The disc reached #1 on the charts in the UK and climbed to #9 on The Billboard charts in the US. Famed rock critic Robert Christgau gave the disc an A- rating while Rolling Stone wrote that the album “stands as some of the freshest, most provocative music around right now.”

Bruce Springsteen - 1985-08-09 - Chicago, IL (HQ Aud)

On June 4, 1984, Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA, an album which took him far beyond hos traditional fan base in terms of tone, sound and commercial appeal. Filled songs about every day Americans doing their best in the face of hardship, acknowledging that the American Dream was far from perfect, Born In The USA saw Springsteen take a political tone for the first time in his music. The album also was his first deliberate attempt to write a popular hit song, and he succeeded beyond even his wildest expectations. The first single from the disc, Dancing In The Dark (notable for Courtney Cox’s appearance in the video dancing with Bruce), went to #2 on the Billboard charts. Six other tunes from Born In The USA would also crack the top 10. The album itself went to #1, and garnered Springsteen 3 Grammy Award nominations. The disc also featured Springsteen’s first use of a synthesizer in his music, another bow to the current trends in pop music. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau giving it a grade of A+ and the Village Voice awarding it album of the year. Bruce launched a massive 15 month tour in support of the album, playing 156 show on 4 continents. This excellent audience recording captures Springsteen on August 9, 1985, 27 years ago today, in Chicago, near the end of the tor. I saw him about 2 weeks later, on September 1 at Giants Stadium, an amazing show that ended with Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, a very early Christmas present! For those of you who have been longtime visitors to So Many Roads, you know well that one of my favorite artists is the vastly under rated and always overlooked, Marshall Crenshaw. When I bought his self titled debut album in April 1982, soon after its release, I put it on my turntable and never took it off. Filled with Beatles and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Holly in the movie, La Bamba), the album, and tunes such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC became favorites of FM deejays. Esteemed rock critic Robert Christgau rated the album an A, while Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars. The disc reached #36 on the Billboard charts by the summer of 1982. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw out on the club circuit promoting his debut disc, on August 8, 1982, 3  decades ago today. Download this one, then go out and buy both Crenshaw’s debut album as well as its follow up, Field Day, which Christgau thinks was even better (and so do I)!

Pink Floyd - 1987-08-07 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

Pink Floyd's 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, was the band's first without long time member Roger Waters. The recording of the album was marked by ongoing legal battles between David Glimour and Waters over the rights to the name "Pink Floyd". In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went world wide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. This soundboard captures the band during rehearsals for the tour, on August 7, 1987, 26 years ago today, in Toronto. Pink Floyd - 1980-08-06 - Earls Court, London (HQ Aud)

Pink Floyd's monumental 1979 double album, The Wall, was a direct outgrowth of Roger Water's experiences during the band's 1977 World tour. As documented in numerous posts on this blog, Waters, during that tour, began to feel more and more alienated from his audience, which resulted in numerous incidents ranging from yelling obscenities to spitting in the face of a fan. The Wall focuses on themes of isolation and abandonment, telling the tale of Pink, a character based on Waters. When Pink Floyd decided to tour in support The Wall in 1980, the band spared no expense in ensuring that the theatrics, staging and sound quality would be unlike any concert ever before performed. The band spent over $1.5 million on lighting, sound equipment, props, etc. before they even played a concert. The shows would include the building of a giant wall across the stage, which would eventually be torn down as the show progressed. Due to the cost and effort involved in staging each individual concert, Pink Floyd only perforned The Wall live 31 times in just 4 cities, in 1980 and 1981. Those 31 shows had an enormous impact on rock concerts, however, as noted by the NY Times in its March 2nd, 1980 edition. The Times wrote "The Wall show remains a milestone in rock history and there's no point in denying it. Never again will one be able to accept the technical clumsiness, distorted sound and meagre visuals of most arena rock concerts as inevitable. The Wall show will be the touchstone against which all future rock spectacles must be measured." This amazing quality audience recording captures Pink Floyd playing The Wall at Earls Court in London on August 6, 1980, 31 years ago today. Perhaps it was no coincidence that The Wall tour would be the last with Roger Waters as a member of the band. Waters not only built a wall across the satge, but also one between himself and his fellow band mates.

The Bangles – 1986-08-xx – New York, NY (SBD)

I admit it – listening to The Bangles is one of those guilty pleasures that I just can’t explain. I've enjoyed their music from the start, playing songs like Hero Takes a Fall and Going Down to Liverpool from their debut album so often that I wore away the groves on the disc (oh the problems we had in the days before CDs, MP3s and IPods)! When they hit it big in 1986 with the album a Different Light, I might have been first on line to get tickets to their show on Pier 84 in New York City on August 4, 1986, 26 years ago today. Pier 84 was the site of the Miller Concerts on The Pier series, the successor to the Schaefer Music Festival that had been held at Wollman Rink in Central Park. By the way, you can’t have a summer concert series without a beer sponsor. The Pier concerts were originally sponsored by Dr. Pepper, an arrangement that lasted only 1 season since no one goes to a concert to drink soda. Pier 84 is located right next to the Intrepid, the historic World War Two aircraft carrier that is now a floating museum. There was something wild about watching a concert in the shadow of that mighty ship. In any event, The Bangles that August night gave the crowd what they came for – a faithful rendition of all their hits, paying special attention to the songs from A Different Light. Which brings us to the bootleg attached to this post. The only information on the covers is that it’s a soundboard from New York City in August 1986. Could it be the tape of the show from the pier? The set list matches what I remember them playing that night. Guess I’ll never know, but if it isn’t, it’s probably the closest I’ll ever get to finding a bootleg on the show I attended.
