The 1960s - #6: On the evening of October 25, 1962, 62 years ago today, the Beatles perfromed before a live audience at the Playhouse Theater in Manchester, for the BBC show, Here We Go, which was broadcast on the radio the following day.  This was the first BBC performance by the The Beatles to include Ringo, who had joined the band on August 18.  At the time of the show, Love Me Do had just reached #27 on the British charts.  Download this one to get a taste of The Fab Four before Beatlemania erupted wold wide.

Bob Dylan - 1962-01-13 - New York, NY (FM)

1960s - #4:  In January 1961, Bob Dylan traveled to New York City to visit his musical idol Woody Guthrie, who was seriously ill with Huntington's disease in Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. Guthrie had been a revelation to Dylan and influenced his early performances. Dylan stayed in New York, playin clubs around Greenwich Village, About a year after he arrived in the Big Apple, Dylan recorded a session for the radio program Folksinger's Choice, on January 13, 1962, 60 years ago today.  The session would air in March, right around the time hios first album was released.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

1962 - Before Beatlemana, before the appearances of the Ed Sullivan Show, before becoming the first rock band to sell our a sports stadium, before revolutionizing rock & roll with albums such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road, The Beatles honed their chops by playing all night gigs at the Star Club in Hamburg.  Their December 1962 run at the club would be their last, as the Fab Four were on the cusp of stardom. Their first single, Love Me Do, hit the top 20 in England that same month.  So this soundboard recording from December 28,1962, 59 years ago today captures The Beatles at a key moment in theior career, as they transitioned from being a club performers to becoming the greatest rock and roll band in history.

Byrds 1970 - Back To Back - #1: On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line up for the album - Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons - had the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. In addition, they developed a reputation for being a formidable live act, honing their skills by touring relentlessly during a nearly 3 year stretch from September 1969 to July 1972. Sinatra World Tour 1962 - #1: In 1962, Frank Sinatra launched a world tour that took him to Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, England, and Monaco. He was backed by Bill Miller (piano), Irv Cottler (drums), Al Viola (guitar), Harry Klee (flue/sax), Ralph Pena (bass), and Emil Richards (vibes), The tour was the largest humanitarian gesture of Fran;s long storied career. Every concert was designed to raise money for children's charities. At the press conference prior to the tour, Sinatra said he was "an over privileged adult, [who] ought to help underprivileged children." Frank paid for the entire tour, even though first lady Jackie Kennedy had offered to have the State Department sponsor the venture. Buddy Rich, who had played drums for Sinatra, described the tour as follows: "He took [six] of the best musicians in Los Angeles, He chartered an airplane, went to Japan, went to London [to raise money] for the orphanages. He paid the transportation of the entire technical crew, plus the musicians, plus the entertainers. He gave every musician a set price plus their expenses for hotels and food. And nobody ever knew about it. He just went over and did this out of the goodness of his heart. You gotta be some kind of a beautiful man to do this." The Beatles - 1962-01-01 - London, UK (SBD)

1960s - #1: On January 1, 1962, 57 years ago this vey day, 4 young lads from Liverpool - John, Paul, George and Pete - found themselves in the London Studios of Decca records, auditioning for their first recording contract.  They played 15 songs, all selected by their new manager Brian Epstein, only 3 of which were Lennon/McCartney originals (Like Dreamers Do, Hello Little Girl and Love Of The Loved).  In just under an hour, the audition was over.  While Decca recorded the session, they eventually made the decision to reject the band, telling them that "guitar groups are on the way out" and that they "have no future in show business".  Several months later, the group met George Martin of EMI Records, replaced Pete with Ringo, and the rest, as they say, is history.  By the way, Decca learned their lesson well. At the recommendation of George Harrison, they signed the Rolling Stones to a recording contract!  Download this stdio recording to catch the Fab Four just months before they started down the road which would make them the most successful and influential band in rock and roll history.

The Gaslight Tapes are 3 legendary recordings which capture Dylan at the outset of his career. All 3 tapes are from performances at the gaslight Café in New York City. The first Gaslight tape captured Dylan on September 9, 1961. The 2nd and 3rd tapes, are from late October, 1962, 51 years ago this month, (the exact date is unknown) and may actually be 2 shows from the same night. While about 10 tracks from those 2 concerts have been officially released (go here to purchase the album), we can still bring you 7 unreleased tracks from those shows. Download these, combine them with the official album, and you’ll have a complete recording of Dylan at the very start of his now half century long career.

In the early 1960s, Atlantic City, once a bustling resort destination, was in economic decline as tourists took advantage of cheap airfares to visit other destinations such as Miami Beach and Las Vegas. Some clubs in Atlantic City, however, continued to draw crowds, in large part due to their connections with famous celebrities and illegal gambling. Once such venue was the 500 Club, owned by Paul "skinny” D'Amato, a good friend of both Frank Sinatra and the Mafia. The club’s front room had a 1000 seat concert hall while its backroom housed a casino. Allegedly, many of the stars who performed on stage in the front room finished the night gambling in the back. In any event, Sinatra, because of his connection to D’Amato, performed at the 500 Club on numerous occasions, including August 25, 1962, 51 years ago this very day. Bob Dylan - 1962-07-02 - Montreal, Canada (SBD)

In March 1962, Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut album, which was produced by Columbia's legendary talent scout John H. Hammond, who had signed Dylan to the label. The album featured folk standards, with only 2 two original compositions, Talkin' New York and "Song to Woody. The disc failed to chart, and sold barely enough copies to break even. As a result, some at Columbia referred to Dylan as “Hammond’s Folly”. How wrong they were. This soundboard recording captures Dylan later that same year on July 2, 1962, 49 years ago today.
