Elton John - 1984-06-30 - London, UK (FM)

In early spring 1976, tickets went on sale for Elton John at Madison Square Garden, a then unheard of 7 show stand at the World's Greatest Arena which would conclude his world wide Louder Than The Concorde (But Not Quite As Pretty) Tour. Elton, while not yet a Sir, was easily the biggest rock star in the world at the time. So, it came as no surprise that my buddies and I decided our first concert experience had to be Elton at the Garden. Shut out from getting tickets through Ticketron, we opted for the local scalper, who sold us floor seats for $25. My dad gave me hell for paying three times the face value ($8.50!) to go see "some long haired rock and roller" (pretty ironic given the state of Elton's hair line). Parental disapproval aside, we made the trek from NJ to The Garden on August 15, 1976. That concert eventually inspired my self published book, Ten Rules Of The Road That I Learned At My First Concert. Since that 1976 show, I've seen Elton live 5 more times, all at MSG: 

• in October 1992 - The One tour
• in October 1999 - a solo performance
• n September 2005 - the 30th anniversary of Captain Fantastic
• in March 2007 - his 60th birthday concert
• in November 2018 - the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour

I've seen Sting on stage twice - once with The Police in January 1983 at Madison Square Garden and  once solo on February 15,1991 at the Beacon Theater. The Sting tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. A week later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and over 30 years, 2 kids, and 2 dogs later, we're still going strong. 

This TV soundboard recording captures a portion of Sting's set at the Glatonbury Festival on June 29, 1997, 26 years ago today.

I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Shery's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them!

Bruce Springsteen - 2009-06-27 - Glastonbury UK (Webcast)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the sameyear  3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. Then last year, as mentioned in our Paul McCarteny posts earlier this month, I I saw Springsteen in a 6th decace, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing vocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man.  Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! So, that's 11 dufferent times I've senn Springsteen take the stage.

Bruce Cockburn - 2011-06-26 - Laytonville, CA (FM)

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight. The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue!

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn almost 20 years later, in Laytinvilled on June 26, 2011, a dozen tears ago today.  By the way, Cockburn ends the set with Waiting On A Miracle, the same tune he finished with when I saw him, which is a song that became a regular part of the Jerry Garcia Band's set lists in th 1990s.

John Hiatt - 1993-06-26- Chicago IL (FM)

After not seeing a concert for over 2 years, from July 2019 to August 2021, due to the pandemic, the first show I attended as concert halls re-opneed was John Hiatt on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I sw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me between seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021). 

If you've been a regular visitor to So Many Roads, you'll know that I'm a big fan of John Hiatt. While his 1987 and 1988 albums Bring The Family and Slow Turning are his best known, His album, Perfectly Good Guitar,  released in September 1993, however, may just be my favorite. Almost every one of the album's 12 tracks is worth playing again and again, with the title tune, Cross My Fingers, Straight Outta Time, Loving A Hurricane, and Buffalo River Home being true standouts. In fact, that last tune, with its catchy tune playing counterpoint to its saddening lyrics, just may be Hiatt's best. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt about 3 months before the release of Perfectly Good Guitar, in Chicago on June 26, 1993, 3 decades ago ago today. Hiatt gives everyone a sneak peak of his fpthcoming disc, plating the title track to finish the set.

Bruce Hornsby - 1988-06-25 - Hebron, OH (SBD)

Bruce Hornsby is one of those rare artists I've seen as a lead in performer, a solo headliner, and as part of a group. In May 1987, I saw him lead in for the Grateful Dead at Leguna Seca, the only Dead show I attended on the West Coast. Then between 1993 and 2018, my wife and I saw Bruce as the headliner on 6 different occasions, some shows solo, some with the Range, and some with the Nosiemakers. Then after 5 years without seeing Mr. Hornsby, we went to 2 of his shows earlier this year, a solo performance in March and a concert with the Noisemakes just 4 days ago! That makes Hornsby just 1 of 7 artists - the others are the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, The Band, Los Lobos, Joe Jackson and Bruce Springsteen - that I have seen 2 or more times in the same year. On top of that, we saw him 9 times as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1990 and 1991 combined!

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever in June 1977 and then again in September 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone. with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions. 

Incredibly, this FM broadcast captures the duo the day after the first fime I saw them, in Baltimore on June 24, 1977, 46 years ago today!

Rachel Sweet - 1979-06-24 - Seattle, WA (FM)

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, punk and new wave music, which had been the province of underground and college radio stations, began to make its way onto more mainstream stations such as WNEW-FM in New York. The first time I heard the then 18 year old Rachel Sweet on WNEW, I had to run out and buy her debut album, Fool Around. The disc became a staple on the turntable (yes - it's that old!)in my college dorm room. Part new wave, part early 60's girl group in sound, the album featured songs such a B-A-B-Y, Wildwood Saloon, I Go to Pieces and Sad Song. In the summer of 1979, I got to see Rachel in Central Park as the lead in for Eddie Money. This FM Broadcast captures Rachel during that tour, in Seattle, on June 24, 1979, 44 years ago this very day. Unfortunately that would be the last time I saw Ms. Sweet live, though I did make a real effort to catch a 2nd show, only to have the rock gods intervene. In early 1980, tickets went on sale for Jerry Garcia at the Capitol Theatre, with Rachel Sweet as his lead-in. While my roomies weren't huge Garcia fans, they all agreed we should get tickets so we could see Rachel. And, so I did! The show was scheduled for March 1, 1980. A week before the concert, however, came the announcement that Robert Hunter had replaced Rachel Sweet as the lead-in. No explanation was ever provided, but I'm guessing there was concern that the Dead Head audience may not have appreciated Ms. Sweet.

I've seen the Pretenders live 3 times - early on in their career in October 1981 at the Palladium, in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall after the commercial success of the albums Learning To Crawl & Get Close, and then just a few years ago, in April 2018, at the Morristown PAC. That gap of 31 years between 1987 and 2018 is the 4th longest I ever went between seeing a concert by the same band. (FYI - the 3 longest gaps were: 40 years betweem seeing Pat Benatar 1981 and 2021, 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, and 34 years between seeing John Hiatt in 1987 and then in 2021).

The first 3 times I saw Jerry Garcia, all in the late 1970s & early 1980s, long time song writing partner Robert Hunter served as his lead in. Hearing Hunter live is always a unique experience, as his take on the countless tunes he wrote with Jerry is often so different than how they sound when played by the Grateful Dead.

Van Morrison - 1987-06-21 - Glastonbury, UK (FM)

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. In any event, my wife and I are hoping that one day will get to see him play Some One Like You, as that's our wedding song.

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash for the first time in 1978, when the band was riding high after the release of the CSN album a year earlier. That disc climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, Just A Song Before I Go, reached the #7 spot. Since that first show, I've seen them 5 other times - in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1992 - not to mention a CSNY show in 2000, plus solo concerts by Stills in 1979 and Crosby in 2015.

This soundboard recording captures the trio on their 2012 summer tour, at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury on June 20, 2012, 11 years.  While some places list this as June 21 (the band played the venue on both the 20th and 21st), the fact that Nash ast one point tells folks"to come back tmorrow" leads me to beleive its from the first of the 2 nights.

Of all of Billy Joel's albums, my two favorites are two of his earliest, Piano Man and Turnstiles. His breakthrough album, The Stranger, didn't do much for me, and his first #1 disc, 52nd Street, is on my list of albums I never want to hear again. That disc came out when I was in college and so many people were playing it constantly that I just couldn't take it any more. So, given those facts, why have I seen Billy Joel in concert on half a dozen occasions? Well, back in 1990 I met a girl. And we went out on a few dates. And she had tickets to see Billy, her favorite artist, at Yankee Stadium. And she invited me to go. And two years later we were married! And marrying her has been the best thing I've ever done in my life! So, whenever she wants to see Billy Joel, I gladly get the tickets. As I mentioned, we've seen him 6 times together - 1990, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

I saw EC twice in concert, both times at Madison Square Garden. The frist was in April 1987, one of the best shows I've ever attended and then again in April 1990. The 1987 show was actually taped for a live album, but that project was shelved and it was never released.

This sounboard recording captures Clapton long before I saw him live, in Memphis on June 18, 1975, 4 dozen years ago today. Slowhand was on tour in support of the album There’s One in Every Crowd, the follow up to his chart topping disc 461 Ocean Boulevard. Unfortunately, EC’s growing dependence on alcohol made recording the album difficult. As a result, There’s One in Every Crowd didn’t match the quality of its predecessor. The disc only rose to #21 in the Billboard album charts and failed to yield any singles that charted.

I saw David Crosby live 8 times - 6 with CSN, once with CSNY and most recently, a solo show in 2015 at the Morristown PAC. Crosby is just one of 2 artists (Bruce Springsteen is the other), that I have seen live in at least 5 different decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s).

This webcast recording captures Crosby in Virginia on June 17, 2015, 6 years ago today and exactly 2 days before I saw him solo in Morristown.  We lost David earlier this year - may he rest in peace.

On April 22, 2016, I saw America for the 2nd time, at a show in Morrstown NJ. That was 38 years after that first time I saw them, in June 1978 at the Garden State Ats Center in NJ. That's the 2nd longest gap between concerts for any band that I've seen live,  The longest gap was between Pat Benatar shows - 4 decaders frm 1981 to 202!.

As mentioned in our Nick Lowe post a few days ago, I saw Rockpile at Belmont Park on July 8, 1979, leading in for Blondie. Needless to say, the contrast between the regular track crowd, many cigar smoking, Oscar Madison types, and the new wavers in attendance for the concert was quite a site to behold,  Rockpile opened their set that day with the highly appropriate The Race Is On.

This FM broadcast captures Rockpile in London, just a month before I saw them, on June 6, 1979, 44 years ago today.

I saw Joe Jackson 3 times in the early 1980s - February 1980, August 1980 and October 1982 - and watched the transition from Angry "Punk Rock" Joe to Sentimental "Cole Porter" Joe happen right before my very eyes!

This soundboard recording from June 16, 1984, 39 years ago today, captures the former a ngry punk rocker in full "Sentimental Joe" mode  That year, Jackson continued to venture far from his new wave roots, releasing the album Body & Soul, an album drawing inspiration from jazz standards and salsa rhythms. The disc wen to number #20 on the Billboard charts in the US, and spawned a top 15 hit, You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want).
