JS 1983 - Back To Back - #1: After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. The one major exception was his 1976 number 1 single, Welcome Back, which served as the theme song to the televison comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Gabel Kaplan in the title role.  This soundboard recording captures Sebastian some 7 years later, during the early show at Roickefeller's in Houston, playing tht tune along with plenty of ongs from his Lovin' Spoonful days. John Sebastian entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, as a member of the Lovin' Spoonful. They were inducted alongside Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor, just to name 3 other members of that class. Sebastian reunited with the other members of theSpoonful at the ceremony to perform 2 songs, Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind, and their classic hit, Do You Believe In Magic.

This soundboard recording goes back to Sebastian's first solo tour after leaving the Lovin' Spoonful, capturing a solo acoustic performance in Berkeley on April 12, 1970, 56 years ago today.

When rain played havoc with the schedule and staging however, the festival organizers asked Sebastian to perform an acoustic set while they cleared water off the stage in order to set up the amps for Santana. Sebastian's Woodstock set consisted of 3 songs from his recorded but not yet released John B. Sebastian album (How Have You Been, I Had A Dream", and "Rainbows All Over Your Blues) and 2 Lovin' Spoonful songs (Darling Be Home Soon and "Younger Generation). On September 8, 1979, 45 years ago today, Parr Meadows Race Track in Brookhaven, Long Island hosted a concert in honor of the 10th Anniversary of Woodstock. A crowd of 40,000 turned out for the show, hardly the “half a million strong” from 1969, but still twice what an arena the size of Madison Square Garden could hold. The ten hour show featured a number of artists who played at the original Woodstock Festival, though many of them were now flying solo, such as Country Joe McDonald, Leslie West, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Butterfield, Rick Danko and Stephen Stills. John Sebastian, who as mentioned in a post last month, wasn't originally invited to Woodstock but still wound up playing a short set, also made this 10th anniversary show, as captured in the FM broadcast.

Twenty-five years later, he returned for Woodstock '94, playing harmonica for Crosby, Stills and Nash and appearing with his own band.

This excellent audience recording captures him a year after Woodstock, at the same Isle Of Wight festival featured in our Chicago post yesterday, on August 29, 1970, 54 years ago today.  As mentioned in that Chicago post, we'll have more on the Isle or Wight festivals in our Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan posts coming up in the next 2 days.  Thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the artwork and original files.

2000 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2000-03-06 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2000 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was highlighted by the inductions of Eric Clapton, Bonnie  Raitt and James Taylor, all of whom not only performed solo, but also particated in the All Star Jam to close the night. For Clapton, it was his 3rd induction, after having been recognized as a member of Cream and The Yardbirds.  Diana Ross performed God Bless The Child in honor of Billie Holiday's imduction, while Ray Charles played Nature Boy to commerate Nat King Cole. The Lovin Spoonful reunited to play 2 songs, while Patti Smith performed People Have The Power in honor of Clive Davis's induction.  The ceremony also featured the first inductions into a new category, Sidemen.

After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. Despite that, Sebastian toured relentlessly, often pairing up with other folk rock artists with similar sytles to his. For example, he often played with NRBQ, and in 1975, teamed up with David Bromberg.   This soundboard recording captures Sebastioan and Bromberg in Chicago on Jnauary 23, 1975, 4 dozen years ago today, taping an episode of Sound Stage. By the way, just about a year after this concert, Sebastian woul have his one moment of solo commercial success, as the tune, Welcome Back, which he wrote as the theme song for the TV sitcom Welcome Back Kotter, went to #1  on the Billboard charts.

As mentioned in our Bob Dylan post, The Band spent the spring opf 1967 working with Dylan, a set of recordings that would become the legndary Basement Tapes.  The tunes were truly recorded in the basement, at a house in West Saugerties, a town near Woodstock, know as Big Pink, where The Band would also record their debut album appropriately titled, Music From Big Pink (A side note - its pretty incredible that one house was the site of 2 legendary albums). This excellent audience recording captures them 26 years after the Summer Of Love, and 29 years ago today,  in Chicago. They are joined for one somg by John Sebastian, another veteran of 1967.  That year, Sebastian's band, the Loving' Spoonful, had 3 top 40 hits - Darling Be Home Soon at #18, Six O'clock at #15 and She Is Still A Mystery at #27. Sadly, it was the beginning of the end for the Spoonful, as dissension and personnel changes that year led to Sebastian leaving the group in 1968 and the band;s eventual demise in 1969.

Jorma Kaukonen - 2003-08-08 - Bottom Line, NY NY  (EX Aud)

I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots. 

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Jorma at his acoustic best, with a little help from John Sebastian, at the legendary Bottom Line on on August 8, 2003,, 18 years ago today.

Viet Nam Veterans Benefit Concert - 1987-07-04 - Landover, MD (FM)

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! John Sebastian - 2017-08-10 - Philadelphia PA (HQ Aud)

John Sebastian wasn't scheduled to perform at Woodstock, but he went to the festival as a spectator.  When rain played havoc with the schedule, and staging however, the festival organizers asked Sebastian to perform an acoustic set while they cleared water off the stage in order to set up the amps for Santana. Sebastian's Woodstock set consisted of 3 songs from his recorded but not yet released John B. Sebastian album (How Have You Been, I Had A Drea, and "Rainbows All Over Your Blues) and 2 Lovin' Spoonful songs (Darling Be Home Soon and "Younger Generation). Sebastian appeared on the original Woodstock album and in the documentary film. Twenty-five years later, he returned for Woodstock '94, playing harmonica for Crosby, Stills and Nash and appearing with his own band.

This high quality incidence recording captures Sebastian just 2 years ago today (and 4 dozen years after his impromptu Woodstock performance) in Philadelphia on August 10, 2017.

Rock Influences - 1984-06-09 - Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ (FM)

The launch of MTv in August 1981 revolutionized the music industry. Suddenly, folks were not just listening to their favorite music but hey were watching it. " I Want My MTv" became such a well known catch phrase that Dire Straits incorporated it into their classic track, Money For Nothing, inviting Sting to sing that line as part of the tune's coda. Videos went from simple tapes of a band playing a tune live to elaborate, mini movies costing millions to produce. While MTv in its easrly days primarily featured punk and new wave music, mainstream rock soon became part of the rotation. In addition, the station grew beyond videos, developing original programming such as Unplugged, the MTV Video Music Awards and Rock Influences. Launched in 1984, rock influences took a look at a current band or artist  by examining how ,they were influenced by the  prior generation of musicians.  The show featured live performances, usually filmed at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ, by both the current act and its influences. When REM performed at the Capitol on June 9, 1984, 44 years ago today, their rock influences, served as the opening act. This FM broadcast captures their opening set in its entirety, featuring tunes from John Sebastian, Richie Havens, Roger McGuinn, Jesses Colin Young and The Band!
