Grateful Dead - 1990-12-31 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

We close our New Year's celebration with our traditional concert from the Grateful Dead.  This soundboard recording from December 31, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today, is special for several reasons.  First, Bruce Hornsby was a full time  member of the band at the time, and his presence always seemed to bring out the best in Jerry.  Second, it was the last night of the very magical year 1990, when the Dead's playing brought back memories of the classic shows from the 1970s.  Third, the one and only Branford Marsalis sat in for the end of set 1, all of set 2 and the encores, helping inspire the band to test its limits.  Finally, as someone pointed out to me, it was sadly the last New Year's Eve show produced by Bill Graham, who died in November 1991 in a helicopter crash. Of course, as with any Dead show, covers abound, 2 from Chuck Berry - Promised land & Johnny Be Goode, Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away to sandwich the 2nd Set, Johnny Cash's Big River and a version of The Band's The Weight during the encore.  By the way, the download file contains 3 different versions of the show - I couldn't decide which sounded best so I gave you all of them! Hope you enjoyed all 6 of all New Year's Eve show! Happy 2015 to you all.

When I first came across this recording, I thought it might be a fake. The notes said it was a private show in Surrey, England featuring Complete Abandon, a pseudonym for a band including Eric Clapton and special guests such as Peter Townshend, Joe Walsh and Ringo Starr. I would have thought that such an all star gala would be far more well known and publicized. Turns out, it is the real thing. According to the wesbite where'seric.com, EC has been hosting these alcohol free New Tear's Eve parties every year since 1992! Tickets are not put on sale to the general public. Each year, the band bill themselves under an unusual name. For example, in 2010, the band took the moniker We Are Not Saints, while the 2009 lineup called themselves Any Lengths! This soundboard (or possible high quality audience recording) captures EC and friends on December 31, 2007, 7 years ago today. In keeping with our theme, they do a host of cover tunes, including Knock On Wood, Sea Cruise, Lucille, Blueberry Hill and Shake Rattle And Roll, just to name a few. Download this one to be part of a very special annual tradition in which EC, a former alcoholic, tries to help others ring in the New Year without the traditional drinks of choice. Bruce Springsteen - 1977-12-31 - Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

As 1977 came to a close. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes took the stage at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ for a concert to ring in the New Year. The audience included some very special guests - Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band.  As the clock struck midnight, Bruce & The E-Streeters joined Southside and the Jukes on stage for an impromptu New Year's Eve party.  The entire set form that hsitoric December 31, 1977 show, 27 years go today, was captured by the Capitol's video system and can be found on youtube. Fm radio caught the first 2 songs of the set before signing off, and fortunately, a soundboard recording exists of the rest. In addition to playing 2 Southside tunes - The Fever and I Don't Want To Go Home, Bruce played covers of Quarter to Three from Gary US Bonds and Higher & Higher by the lendendary Jackie Wilson.

As long time readers of So Many Roads know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991.  The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:

• the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989 
• the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989 
• the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990 
• the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; 
• 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety in Europe 1972
•  the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. 
• a show from Pine Knob on June 19,1991 
• a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991 

Little wonder then, we keep coming back to that period here at So Many Roads. Today we bring youa soundboard recording from December 30, 1990, 2 dozen tears ago today. The Dead always have cover tunes in their set list, and this show is no exception.  The band breaks out 2 Dylan tunes in the first set, Maggie's farm and Stuck Inside of Mobile.  In addition, Bruce Hornsby had joined the band at this point, so the Dead end set 1 with their take on Hornsby's Valley Road, the 6th and final time they would play that tune!  By the way, we like 1990 so much that tomorrow we'll feature the Dead's New Year's Eve show from that year as part of our celebration ringing in 2015.

Eddie Money - 1991-12-29 - Ventura, CA  (FM)

I'm wondering how many folks simply know Eddie Money as the guy in the Geico commercial who owns a travel agency.  I give him a lot of credit for being able to poke some fun at himself in that commercial, singing lines to Two Tickets to paradise to a befuddled family! (They need 4 tickets and leave in 2 weeks, not tonight).  In any event, Eddie rang up a pretty good career in the 1980s, inducing 4 platinum albums and 9 top 40 singles.  His biggest hit was in Take me Home Tonight in 1986, which climbed all the way to #4 on the Billboard charts,  That tune featured a duet with Ronnie Spector, who sngs the chorus from her hit, Be My Baby.  This soundboard recording from December 29, 1991, 23 years ago today,  features Take Me Home Tonight, which while its not exactly a cover tune,  comes close enough for the purposes of our theme this month!

Joan Jett - 1980-12-27 - Bottom Line, NY NY (FM)

Joan Jett is not exactly classic rock, nor is she a star on the level of the other artists posted on this site. So why post this show? Well, first, in keeping with our theme this month, Joan does some great covers including Wooly Bully from Sam the Sham and Rebel Rebel from David Bowie. Second, Joan just got elected into the rock & roll Hall of Fame - congrats.  Third, a good friend of mine is a bit of a Joan Jett fanatic, having traveled to more dive bars than I can count to see her! This one is for you, old buddy! Finally, this post gives me a chance to talk about two staples of rock and roll as I was growing up in the NY area - the Bottom Line, and WNEW-FM. The Bottom Line was a night club on West 4th Street, that was the place for acts trying to make it big to get their start. It also was a venue that established artists played when they wanted a smaller, more intimate atmosphere. Check out the club's archive (go here) to see the amazing roster of artists who performed at the Bottom Line, including folks like Bruce Springsteen in 1974 and 1975, Tom Petty in 1977 and Van Morrison in 1978, just to name a few. Many of those shows were broadcast by WNEW-FM, possibly the more famous rock and roll station in the country (go here for the WNEW website). WNEW, which pioneered FM rock and roll, was home to such famous DJs as Pete Fornatale, Allison Steele (the Nightbird), Johnathan Schwartz, Dave Herman, Dennis Elsas and the legendary Scott Muni. WNEW's slogan was "Where Rock Lives" and such was the case for over 30 years. The partnership between the Bottom Line and WNEW helped preserve dozens of amazing live concerts, and this Joan Jett performance, from 34 years ago to the day, is no exception.

How We Choose What To Post At So Many Roads

Over the 5 plus years we've running So Many Roads,, I’ve gotten numerous questions on how we choose what to post. I’ve also gotten several requests for certain bands or types of music. Given all that, I thought I’d take a minute to explain how we decide on what to post. I consider 3 things in deciding what bands/concerts to post at So Many Roads:

1. Sound Quality: Basically, no show gets posted unless the sound quality is top notch. Over 90% of what we post at So Many Roads are soundboard or FM broadcasts. When I first started this site 4 years ago, I took the advice of Tunzmaster Dino, from the legendary D&P’s Bootleg Tunzworld, that no one wants to hear a show that sounds like it was recorded in your bathroom with the water running.  Sound quality is king. While we do post some audience recordings, we do our best to make sure they sound great. Occasionally, maybe 1 or 2 % of the time, we’ll post a less than great sounding show for historical or sentimental reasons, but 9 out of 10 times, if not more, we’re bringing you a soundboard or broadcast quality show.


2. The Date: Given that this blog has evolved to feature a this date in history” approach, the show we post each day has to be from that day! So, if its November 22, then we’ll find a concert from November 22 from some year between 1955 and today. When you see posts such as Concerts From Today in history or some other type of announcement, it means I couldn’t find a show from that day that I felt was worth posting.


3. My Taste In Music: In the end, I post shows that feature music I enjoy. You see lots of shows at So Many Roads from the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, CSNY, Eric Clapton the Allman Brothers, etc. because that’s what I listen to every day. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, grunge or progressive rock, so you don’t see any posts from bands that play those styles of music. I like the blues, but in small doses, which is why you only get occasional posts from artists such as Muddy Waters, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m into live music, not studio outtakes, so you’ll see very few of the latter type of posts here at So Many Roads. I know that my musical tastes may differ from others, which is why I link to sites such as JustDave’s Place, where you can often find music I may not post. By the way, the number of times I post a band ousually reflects how much I enjoy their music but not always. You’d see far more Beatles posts, for example, but unfortunately, there are far too few high quality concert recordings available. Same goes for The Band from the Robbie Robertson era, Rockpile and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording of Dave Mason from December 20, 1975, 39 years ago today, includes his version of the Bob Dylan classic All Along The Watchtower. Of course, numerous artists have covered that tune, such as Dave Matthews, U2 andThe Grateful Dead, but of course, the definitive version of the song has to be the one by Jimi Hendrix in 1968. So, at first glance, it would seem that Mason is just another in a long line of folks covering Dylan but never equaling Hendrix. What many people don’t know, however, is that Dave Mason played acoustic guitar on Hendrix’s legendary cover!

Simon & Garfunkel - 2003-12-20 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

On February 23, 2003, Simon and Garfunkel reunited to perform in public for the first time in a decade, singing The Sound of Silence to open the Grammy Awards. Before the show, the duo had been presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring their musical contributions over the past four and a half decades. The Grammy reunion led to the pair deciding to go on the road together for the first time in more than 20 years. The tour, fittingly titled Old Friends, both the name of one of their songs and a reflection of their lives, launched on October 16 and ran until December 21. As part of their set list, Simon and Garfunkel performed Hey Schoolgirl, which they said was the first song they had written and recorded together. In addition, each night, about midway through their performance, the duo brought out another famous pair, the Everly Brothers, for a 4 song set. Simon and Garfunkel said this of Phil and Don “We learned to sing by listening to their records. They were our heroes then and they are our heroes now." Of course, the highlight of each night was the long list of classics, tunes such as America, the Boxer, Sounds of Silence and Mrs. Robinson, just to name a few, that at onetime ruled the airwaves and made S & G legends. This soundboard recording captures the pair on the next to last night of the tour, December 20, 2003, 11 years ago today, in Atlanta. Rolling Stones – 1989-12-19 – Atlantic City, NJ (SBD)

The Rolling Stones launched their Steel Wheels tour on August 31, 1989, at the now demolished Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. After 57 dates across the US and Canada, they returned to the East Coast for 3 final shows, on December 17, 19 and 20, in Atlantic City, NJ, just about 60 miles away from where the tour began. The Stones pulled out all the stops for these shows, with Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin and John Lee Hooker making guest appearances all 3 nights. The middle night, December 19, 1989, 32 years ago today,  also featured one other special guest, Slowhand himself, the one and only Eric Clapton. Thanks to all the special guests, the  Stones played a host of covers, all captured in this soundboard recording, including Little Red Rooster and  Boogie Chillen.

The Who - 1977-12-15 - London, UK (SBD)

In 1958, Eddie Cochran co wrote and recorded the song Summertime Blues, which he took to #8 on the Billboard charts. The tune became a favorite of The Who, who included the song in their set list at the US debut at the Monterrey Pop festival in June 1967. For the rest of that decade and right through the 1970s, Summertime Blues was a staple of The Who’s set list. As this soundboard recording evidences, this show from London on December 15, 1977, 37 years ago today, is no exception! By the way, this show also deserves special mention as the last time Keith Moon sat behind the drum kit for The Who at a live concert.  he would perform with the band on May 25., 1978 at a special session filmed for "The Kids Are Alright movie, before passing away from an overdose on September 7, 1978.

Grateful Dead - 1971-12-14 - Ann Arbor, MI (SBD)

Every band started as a cover band, playing tunes that inspired them to play music in the first place.  Of course, once a band starts to write its own music, cover tunes start to fade from the set list. At that point, maybe a band will include a cover or two at each concert as a tribute to their past, but the focus is on the music they penned themselves!  Of course, the Grateful Dead are the exception to that rule.  The Dead somehow not only never stopped playing covers, but also transformed some of those cover tunes in such a way to make them their own.  No better example can be found than the Buddy Holly tune Not Fade Away, a 2 minute masterpiece in the hands of the 1950's rocker that the Dead turned into a 20 minute or more jam session, filled with twits and turns,.  The version found in this soundboard recording from December 14, 1971, 43 years ago today, is split in two parts, which seamlessly sandwich Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.  By the way, while we focused on Not Fade Away in this write up, don't miss the Dead's first set cover of Chuck Berry's holiday classic, Run Rudolph Run!

In 1971, The Temptations released the single, Just My Imagination, which became the third tune by the band to reach #1 on the Billboard charts.   Seven years later, the Rolling Stone's covered the song on their album Some Girls.  The tune became a staple of the Stone's 1981 tour set list, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from their show in Tempe, AZ on December 13, 1981, 33 years ago today!

Linda Ronstadt – 1976-12-12 - Landover MD (SBD)

In August 1976, Linda Ronstadt released the album Hasten Down The Wind, which became her 3rd straight million selling disc, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish that feat. The album also earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance The album was different from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters as opposed to country rock tunes. The title track, for example was written by then up and coming songwriter Warren Zevon. One of the most famous tracks from the album, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, was composed by the then little known Karla Bonoff. The album received huge critical acclaim, and also spent several weeks in the top 3 on the Billboard charts. Ronstadt went on tour later that year in support of the album, and this soundboard captures her 38 years ago today, December 12, 1976, in Landover, Maryland. Paul McCartney - 1992-12-10 - New York, NY (SBD)

In December 1992, right before launching his 1993 New World Tour (see an earlier post for the Charlotte show from that tour), Sir Paul stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theatre in NY to film an episode of MTV's Up Close. Yep, that's the same Ed Sullivan Theatre where The Beatles made their historic US television debut in 1964! Here's the complete soundboard from that session on December 10, 1992, 22 years ago today.  Paul plays a nice mix of Beatle tunes and solo stuff, including several songs from the album Off The Ground, which would not be released until February. Download this recording for an opportunity to hear Sir Paul in a more intimate setting, a 1200 set theater, as opposed to the stadium shows that highlighted the spring tour. By the way, in keeping with our cover song theme, Macca opens hios set with Twenty Flight Rock, originally done by Eddie Cochran.

Here's a holiday gift from So Many Roads to each of you - our first post from the one and only, Smokey Robinson.  Smokey, who started his career with Miracles in the late 1950's, is still going strong today, almost 60 years later, as he is currently on tour!  One of the most successful members of the Motown family, Smokey would produce 26 top forty hits with the Miracles between 1960 and 1970, such as You've Really Got a Hold on Me, I Second That Emotion, Tears of a Clown, Ooo Baby Baby, Going to a Go-Go and The Tracks of My Tears.  He would also pen countless hits for other Motown artists, including "My Guy for Mary Wells; The Way You Do The Things You Do, My Girl and Get Ready for The Temptations; and I'll Be Doggone and Ain't That Peculiar for Marvin Gaye. This high quality audience recording captures Smokey singing all his classics on December 8, 2011, just 3 years ago today.  On top of that, he throws in a great cover of Fly Me To The Moon, a song made famous by The Chairman of The Board, the one and only Frank Sinatra,

In 1969, The Who released Pinball Wizard as the first single from their legendary double album Tommy. The song climbed to #19 on the Billboard charts.  Six years later, Elton John covered the song for the film version of The Who's rock opera. The tune has become a staple of Elton's live performances, often appearing right before or as part of the encores, as in this excellent audience recording from his concert in Manchester on December 7, 2003, 11 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2001-12-06 - Asbury Park, NJ (SBD)

On December 17, 2000, Bruce Springsteen played the first of a series of holiday shows in Asbury Park.  He was back again next year, on December 6, 2001, 13 years ago today.  Billed as marquee a “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show”,  the shows sparked Springsteen fans to speculate just what friends might show up,  The lucky ones who got tickets for the show were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Bruce's take on holiday tunes, such Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, were paired with long lost favorites, such Thundercrack. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Bobby Bandiera, one of the friends who joined Bruce, delivered a stellar cover of Here Come's The Sun.  Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home.  This soundboard recording captures every note of this historic show, which is a perfect to download and enjoy this holiday season and for many more to come.

When you’re a former Beatle and a Sir, your set lists tend not to include any cover tunes. During his concert in London on December 5, 2011, 3 years ago today, however, Sir Paul McCartney made sure to incorporate tunes from his dearly departed brothers in music, George Harrison and John Lennon. Paul got out his ukulele, an instrument George taught him to play, for a rendition of Something. Now while Something is technically a Beatle song, there’s no doubt it belongs to George, so McCartney’s version counts as a cover tune in my book. Later in the set, Paul segued out from A Day In The Life into Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance, a fitting tribute to his song writing partner.
