Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - 2010-05-31 - Malmo, Sweden (Ex Aud)

Blind Faith released its debut, and only, album in August 1969. The band was billed as the first super group, as it consisted of already famous rockers - Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ric Grech and Ginger Baker - who had already established their reputations with Cream and Traffic. That star power helped propel the disc to #1 on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, Blind Faith would burn out as quickly as they reached the summit. By the end of the band’s only North American tour, a 24 date run between July and August 1969, Clapton had checked out, spending more time with opening act Bonnie & Delaney than with the other members of Blind Faith. Blind Faith would never record or play live again. Clapton and Winwood, however, would reconnect again almost 40 years later, when Stevie joined EC on stage at the Country Side Rocks Festival on May 19, 2007. Since that time, the two have toured as a duo on several occasions. This HQ audience recording captures Clapton and Winwood in Sweden on May 31, 2010, 11 years ago today, playing a host of Blind Faith, Cream Traffic and solo classics. By the way, it you’re wondering why Blind Faith never reformed - or why the Cream reunion in 2005 lasted just a few shows - then you should check out the Showtime documentary Beware Mr. baker. That program includes interviews with a host of rock legends such as EC, Winwood, Mickey Hart, Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts and Carlos Santana who all express the same frank opinion of Baker. He was a genius on the drums, bur a vile and nasty individual who alienated family and friends.

Southside Johnny - 1976-05-30 - Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ (FM)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures Southside & The Jukes at the Stony Pony in Asbury Park on May 30, 1976, 45 years ago today.  The band was celebrating the release of their first album with a little help from their friends - Bruce, Miami Steve, Clarence Clemmons, the rest of the E-Street Band and Ronnie Spector!

The 40 song set list for each night covered Sir Paul’s entire career – early and late Beatles tunes, songs from his days with Wings, solo material and even tunes from his work under the pseudonym The Fireman, in conjunction with producer Youth. This soundboard recording captures Paul during that tour in Mexico cCity on May 28, 2010, 11 years ago today. Also included are a host of extras from May 26 and May 27.

The Guess Who - 1983-05-27 - Vancouver, Canada (SBD) 

In 1975, The Guess Who disbanded when lead singer/songwriter Burton Cummings left to pursue a solo career. Eight years later,, the original line up, including Cummings and Randy Bachman briefly re-united for a limited series of concerts in Canada, which resulted in the release of a live album Together Again and a video. Those show were the first time that Bachman and Cummings had played together in the band since the former has left the Guess Who in 1970. The reunion was short-lived, however, as Bachman and Cummings went right back to their solo careers once the tour ended. This soundboard recording captures the band in Vancouver, on May 27, 1983, 38 years ago today, playing a set list that aloso includes BTO favorites Takin' Care Of Business, You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet and Let It Ride!

Frank Sinatra - 1962-05-26  -  Milan, Italy (SBD)

In 1962, Frank Sinatra launched a world tour that took him to Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, England, and Monaco. He was backed by Bill Miller (piano), Irv Cottler (drums), Al Viola (guitar), Harry Klee (flue/sax), Ralph Pena (bass), and Emil Richards (vibes), The tour was the largest humanitarian gesture of Fran;s long storied career. Every concert was designed to raise money for children's charities. At the press conference prior to the tour, Sinatra said he was "an over privileged adult, [who] ought to help under privileged children." Frank paid for the entire tour, even though first lady Jackie Kennedy had offered to have the State Department sponsor the venture. Buddy Rich, who had played drums for Sinatra, described the tour as follows: "He took [six] of the best musicians in Los Angeles, He chartered an airplane, went to Japan, went to London [to raise money] for the orphanages. He paid the transportation of the entire technical crew, plus the musicians, plus the entertainers. He gave every musician a set price plus their expenses for hotels and food. And nobody ever knew about it. He just went over and did this out of the goodness of his heart. You gotta be some kind of a beautiful man to do this." This soundboard recording captures Sinatra during that legendary tour in Milan, Italy on May 26, 1962, 59 years ago today.

Everly Brothers - 1997-05-24 -Manchester, UK (FM)

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, The Everly Brothers (Phil & Don) had three #1 singles - Wake Up Littel Suzie, All I Have To Do Is Dream and Cathy's Clown - and another 3 that went to #2 - Bye Bye Love, Bird Dog and problems. Their vocal harmonies and dual acoustic guitar stylings influenced artists such as The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles. In 2003-2004, The Everlys toured with Simon & Garfunkel, joining Paul and Art on stage for several songs midway through each show. McCartney referenced the duo in his hit Let Em' In, listing Phil and Don among the numerous folks knocking on the door. Robert Plant - 1988-05-23 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

In February 1988, Robert Plant released his 4th solo album, entitled Now and Zen. The disc went to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US and climbed to #10 in the UK, The album would eventually be certified triple platinum. In several ways, Now and Zen marked a return to Plant's time with Led Zeppelin. First, the disc integrated the blues into numerous tracks, unlike his prior solo album. Second, Plant actually sampled several Zeppelin songs including Whole Lotta Love, Dazed and Confused, and Black Dog. Finally, former Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page played on 2 tracks on Now and Zen, Heaven Knows and Tall Cool One. This soundboard recording captures Plant on tour in suppport of the album in Philadelphia on May 23, 1988, 33 years ago today.

Steve Winwood - 1997-05-22 - Manchester, UK (FM)

In June 1997, Steve Winwood released his 7th solo album, appropriately entitled Junction Seven. The title was taken from the name of the nearest highway to Winwood's childhood home in Great Barr, Birmingham. For Winwood, it was his first album since 1990's Refugee From The Heart. Despite a star studded line up, including Nile Rodgers and Lenny Kravitz on guitar, and Grammy award winning producer Narada Michael Walden at the helm, the album did not fare well commercially or critically. Winwood would take 6 year break from making music, not releasing another disc until 2003. This FM broadcast captures Winwood just a few weeks before the release of Junction Seven, on May 22, 1997, 2 dozen years ago today in Manchester.

In the spring of 1976, Paul McCartney, with his new band Wings, toured the United States for the first time since the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966. It was a historic event, commemorated afterwards by a then unheard of release of a 3 album set called Wings Over America. Wings played 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, on Monday May 24 and Tuesday May 25. I was a junior in high school, so my buddies and I couldn't go - school night! Not that we were all that upset. Rumors abounded that the Beatles were on the verge on re-uniting (it had only been 6 years since the break up), so we figured why see 1/4 of the group when it would just be a matter of time before you could see them in their entirety. As we know, the rumors never came true, and just 4 years later, in 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed. Now looking back, its clear I should have found a way to go as Wings never again toured the US. I missed out on history. This excellent audience recording captures Macca & Wings on May 21, 1976, 45 years ago this very day in Uniondale, New York. Unfortunately, they must have caught the taper right after the acoustic set as we're missing the final electric portion of the concert.

In March 1974, Steely Dan released their 3rd studio album, Pretzel Logic, a commercial success which reached #8 on the Billboard charts. The album also received critical acclaim, appearing near the top of several end-of-year polls. The disc finished first in NME Album of The Year vote, and took the number two spot on end of year lists from Robert Christgau and the Village Voice. The album's opening song, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", became the band's biggest hit, reaching #4 on the charts soon after the release of the album. Steely Dan launched a tour in support of the album, the last live shows the band would do for almost 2 decades! This soundboard recording captures Steely Dan on May 20, 1974, 47 years ago today, in London. You'll want this one just to hear how Steely Dan sounded in concert before their 20 year hiatus from performing live.

Bruce Cockburn - 1991-05-19 - Kingston, Canada (FM)

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts.His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I had A Rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting For A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This soundboard recording captures Cockburn in his home country on May 19, 1991, 30 years ago today, playing a set that not only features his 2 big hits, but also the tune Jerry borrowed from him!

This HQ audience recording captures the Crosby and Nash on May 18, 1991, 3 decades ago today, at Westbury Music Fair in Long Island NY. The duo has always been known for their incredible harmonies, so having Art Garfunkel join them for several songs was a perfect fit. That said, I did extensive research before posting this show because I wasn’t sure it if truly took place on the date indicated. You see, according to sites detailing CSN’s tour history, the trio were on the road in the Spring of 1991, and even played shows on May 16 and 17 in nearby Atlantic City, NJ. In December 1967, Traffic released their debut album, Mr. Fantasy, in the UK. The disc, featuring a different track list, was called Heaven Is in Your Mind in the US. The disc went to #8 on the UK charts but only reached the #88 position in the US. In the 1970s, however, while many Traffic albums failed to chart in the UK, the band achieved extraordinary success across the pond. Once Steve Winwood reformed the band after his brief stint with Blind Faith, Traffic would have 4 consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard charts between 1970 and 1974. This soundboard recording captures Traffic in London just about a year before they broke up for almost 2 decades, on May 17, 1974, 47 years today.

Elvis Presley - 1956-05-16 - Little Rock (Ex Aud)

On May 16, 1956, 65 years ago today, Elvis Presley performed at Robinson Auditorium in Little Rock, Arkansas.  The sound quality on this recording of that show, probably made by a single microphone pointed at the PA system, is incredibly good.  Ironically, the tape, which the DJ that night felt wasn’t good enough for airplay, is now regarded as the best of Presley’s early career.  Tickets that night were $1.50 in advance and $2 at the door.  The 21 year old Elvis performed two shows, at 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. and both were packed.  His single Heartbreak Hotel had hit No. 1 just weeks before. In fact, the song was so new that the announcer inadvertently refers to it as Heartbreak Motel.  Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D.J. Fontana along with the vocal group, the Jordanaires, backed Elvis. Eight acts appeared on the bill that night in Little Rock besides Presley, who was billed as “the Nation’s Only Atomic Powered Singer.”  Download this one to hear the Elvis as he starts on his road to becoming THE KING!

Marshall Crenshaw - 1982-05-15 - Capitol Theatre, NJ (FM)

In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Crenshaw on WBCN-FM, while attending college up in Massachusetts. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Why Marshall Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. The album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, Beatle and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). Songs such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC get in your head, grab you and never let go. Yet, while he received critical acclaim, super stardom never followed. By the way, Crenshaw’s 2nd album, Field Day, released about a year later, is just as good and includes the near perfect (at least I think so) Whenever Your On My Mind. As you can probably guess, I’m a huge fan, and finally got to see him live in October 1996 at Maxwell’s in Hoboken (which is a story for another post). This FM Broadcast captures the vastly under rated and under appreciated Mr. Crenshaw at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ on May 15, 1982, 39 years ago today.

Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary - 1988-05-14 - New York, NY (FM)

On May 14, 1988, 33 years ago today, Atlantic Records held a massive concert at Madison Square Garden in New York celebrating the label's 40th Anniversary. Running nearly 13 hours in length, the concert featured an amazing line up of performers from the label's roster, running the gamut from Ben E King to Debbie Gibson to The Coasters to CSN to Yes. Plant performed a short solo set during the concert, then came back out for A Led Zeppelin reunion to close the show.  While The 3 surviving members of Led Zep usually avoided such reunions, (the only other time they had played together since they disbanded in the wake of John Bonham's death was at Live Aid in 1985), but they felt such an incredible sense of gratitude to former Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun .that when he asked them to asked them to play at the anniversary concert they couldn't say no. This soundboard recording captures that historic concert in its entirety, including Plant's solo set and the Led Zep finale.

Emerging from the San Francisco music scene in 1967, Santana became legendary in the Bay Area for his live performances at venues such as the Fillmore. In August 1969, just prior to the release of their debut album, the band played Woodstock and emerged as stars on the national stage. In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their third album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial albumin Oklahoma City on May 10, 1995, 26 yars ago today.
