America Live - Re-Post Folder

An Independence Day treat! The repsonse to our folder of live John Hiatt shows was so strong that we've decided to continue with that approach to re-posts for bands with a significant number of posts at So Many Roads.

So today, in honor of the USA's 250th birthday, we quite appropriately bring you a folder of live shows from a band named after our country, America. The folder contains everything that was previously posted on this blog.

Grab them while you can as due to space limitations this folder can't stay up forever. That said, please don't hammer the folder as that will set off alarm bells and may get it taken down by Mega. Grab a few shows each day, the come back for more the following day.

Enjoy the tunz!

In April 22, 2016, I saw America for the 2nd time, at a show in Morrstown NJ. That was 38 years after that first time I saw them, in June 1978 at the Garden State Arts Center in Homdel, NJ. That's the 2nd longest gap between concerts for any band that I've seen live. (As mentioned in our John Hiatt post earlier this month, 4 decades passed between seeing Pat Benatar in 1981 and 2021 - the longest gap!).

This FM broadcast captures America in New York about a year after the first time I  saw them, in Central Park on June 30, 1979, 47 years ago today. Dan Peek had just left the band in 1978 in order to not only pursue a new musical direction, but also to renew his Christian faith. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell decided to continue on as America. They're still going strong to this very day!

1980s - #3: In 1978, Dan Peak left America not only pursue a new musical direction, but also to renew his Christian faith. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell decided to continue on as America, but struggled over the next few years to achieve the commercial success they were used to. Then in 1982, the duo brought in a host of high-profile musicians, including the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson, Toto's Jeff Porcaro, Christopher Cross. and former Argent guitarist Russ Ballard to help record the album, The View From The Ground.  The disc climbed to #41 on the Billboard charts, making it their most successful album since Harbor in 1977.  In addition, the single You Can Do Magic, crafted by Ballard for the band,  went to #8 on the charts, giving America its first top 10 single since Sister Golden Hair in 1975!  This FM broadcast captures America during their 1982 comeback, in Cleveland on September 5, 1982, 39 years ago today.

About 3 years ago, on April 22, 2016, I saw America for the 2nd time, at a show at the Morristown performing Arts Center. That was 38 years after that first time I saw them, in June 1978 at the Garden State Ats Center. That's the longest gap between concerts for any band that I've seen live,

Today's post goes back wel before I ever saw the band live, According to the notes that came with this show, this is an FM broadcast of America from the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in Los Angles on November 15, 1972, 47 years ago today. Those same notes, though, indicate some questions about the date and location of of this show. On the one hand, a website detailing the history of performances at the Whiskey list Sylvester & The Hot Band and Hemlock featuring Miller Anderson, as appearing at the venue on November 15.  On the other hand, notes on an America fan site quoted the drummer of a band called Country as saying “When we opened for America at the Whiskey A Go Go, there was a film crew there.” Since the album Homecoming was released the same day as this concert, it would hardly be surprising that the show was filmed for promotional purposes. In any event, regardless of the date and location, this is a wonderful showcase of America in the band’s early days, well worth having in your collection.

America - 1972-02-XX - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

Over the years here at So Many Roads, we've had numerous posts from Ultrasonic Studios in New York and The Record Plant in Sausalito. Those radio broadcasts featured some of rock's legends, often when they were just starting out, seeking to build an audience for their material. Philadelphia has a similar show featuring live broadcasts, usually over WMMR-FM, originating from Sigma Sound Studios. We can't bring you the most famous of those Sigma Sound Studios shows, the performance that helped put Billy Joel on the map, because it has been officially released. We can bring you this post, however,an FM broadcast featuring America from February 1972 (exact date unknown), some 44 years ago. The band had just released their debut album on December 29 1971, and their single, Horse With No Name, on January 31, 1972.  That song would soon climb to #1 on the Billboard charts. Download this one, therefore, to hear America right before their rise to the top of the charts. PS - a thanks to the folks at Rock Rare Collection Fetish for the artwork.
