Elvis Presley was part of the inaugural class inducted Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986 - what else would you expect for a man nicknamed "The King".  Also inducted that year were  Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fat Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis - every one a no brainer. The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrate their achievement.

This soundboard recording captures Elvis during one of his semi-annual Las Vegas residencies, diring the dinner show at the Las vegas Hilton on April 1, 1975, 51 years ago today.  Just over 2 years after this performance, we would lose Elvis to years of drug and alcohol abuse - he was just 42 years old.

Elvis 1974 - Back To Back - #1:  On January 26, 1974, Elvis kicked off his annual winter residency at Las Vegas Hilton, which would run until February 9.  The King would play 29 shows over that span, with most nights featuring both a dinner and a midnight engagment.  Elvis was in good form for this run, unlike some of his future stints in Vegas, with his on going addictions at least held at bay for the time being, though his weight gain was quite obvious. Variety wrote "A chubby Elvis Presley is in the throes of romping through his various exercises with playful glee, animal spirits and bemused kissing games with ringside cuties this fortnight …  Certainly the extra poundage doesn’t interfere with his familiar type of belting or mooning ballads. His quips and asides are many, humorous in effect and help to light up delivery of some 15 or more tunes ranging from early rockers to religious and solemn ‘American Trilogy."  This soundboard recording captures the dinner show from January 27, 1974, 51 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set.

In 1976, Elvis Presley slipped further into the drug addicted haze and paranoia which would claim his life the following year. The over weight singer had become a parody of himself. Marjorie Garber wrote that "in effect he had become Liberace. Even his fans were now middle-aged matrons and blue-haired grandmothers." Many of his long time fans, who had supported him during the decline that began in 1973, now turned on the King, appalled that they paid for tickets to concerts which had become grotesque displays of self indulgence. He left girl friend Linda Thompson to date 19 year old Ginger Alden. He fired 3 long time members of his inner circle, who responded by publishing a devastating tell all book that chronicled his drug use. Yet, he continued to sell out shows, and every now and then, glimmers of the King re-emerged. Presley ended 1976 with a 5 show mini tour that ran from December 27 to 31. At all 5 shows, he sounds healthy, strong and in excellent spirits, a far cry from performances earlier that year or those leading up to his tragic death the following year. Whether it was his recent weight loss or the start of his new relationship Alden, some force propelled Elvis to have one last hurrah on the waning days of 1976. This soundboard matrix recording captures him on night 4 of the tour, in Atlanta on December 30, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today. Note: I've also included the soundboard from the show in the downlaod, though it is focussed on the piano as opposed to the vocals. I think the matrix makes for a better listeing experience.

Despite being "The King" of rock & roll, Elvis Presley was not at Woodstock, and no historical evidence exists that either he wanted to play there or that the organizers were interested in having him. Elvis had litlle regard for 'hippies" and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was interested in one thing, making money. The Woodstock organziers saw Elvis as a relic of the past, not the leader of a new generation.  All that said, 1969 still turned out to be an incredibly successful year for Elvis.  He released 3 tunes that all made the top ten on the Billboard charts - Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, and Don’t Cry Daddy. Moreover, buoyed by the success of his December 1968 televised comeback special, Elvis Presley was ready to make a return to live performing in 1969. Colonel Parker booked Elvis at the then new International Hotel in Las Vegas, which boasted the largest showroom in the city, for 57 shows spread over four weeks beginning July 31, 1969. Since his normal backing band, the Jordanaires, declined to participate, afraid of losing the lucrative session work they had in Nashville. Presley assembled an entire new group of backing musicians, led by guitarist James Burton and including two gospel groups, The Imperials and Sweet Inspirations. The King was nervous, however, as these would be his first series of live shows since 1961, and his first in Las Vegas since a disastrous 1956 engagement. All nerves vanished when Presley took the stage on July 31, 1969 for his 1st Vegas show as the audience of 2,200, including many celebrities, gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. Presley was spellbinding, so much so that the next day, Parker was able to negotiate a 5 year deal with The International for Elvis to play each February and August, at a then unheard of annual salary of $1 million. This soundboard recording captures the King during that historic run on August 23, 1969, 55 years ago today.

The King 1976 - Back To Back - #1:In March 1976, Elvis Presely launched his Bicentenial Tour, in honor of America's upcoming 200th birthday on July 4, complete with a special jumpsuit designed to commemorate the historic occaision. Presley's tour would criss cross the country, taking occaisional breaks for his annual residencies in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. The schedule would have taken its toll on a healthy man half The King's age. But Elvis was 41, overweight, suffering from depression, dealing with legal issues, stressed by relationship problems, and hopelessly addicted to drugs. As a result, some nights on tour, he was still, in the words of the Kansas City Star "one of the most charismatic entertainers in America" while on others, "it was like watching a parody of a dying legend", in the words of reviewer Denise Kusel. This soundboard recording captures Elvis during that difficult tour, in Tucson, on June 1, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today. Elvis Presley - 1974-05-23 - Lake Tahoe NV (DS) (SBD)

Elvis Presley 1974 - Back To Back - #1: Starting in August 1969, Colonel Parker signed Elvis Presley to a 5 year deal to appear at the Hilton International Hotel in Las Vegas every February and August, for the then unheard of sum of $1 million annually. In the summer of 1971, rather than send The King on a tour between the two stints in Vegas, Parker booked him at the Sahara Hotel in Lake Tahoe for 2 weeks, leading into his August run at the International. Elvis opened in Lake Tahoe on July 20, 1971, playing the first of what would be 28 shows over the 2 week run. He would come back again in 1973, 1974, and 1976, ultimately giving a total of 98 sold out performances in the hotel's High Sierra Theatre.  This soundboard recording captures Elvis during his 3rd run in Lake Tahoe, which went from May 16 to May 27, on May 23, 1974, a half centtuey ago today. Elvis Presley was part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's inaugural induction class in 1986. What else would you expect for the man nicknamed "The King".  Also in that class were Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis - every one of them a no brainer.

This soundboard recording captures Elvis on March 1, 1974, a half century ago today, on the first night of a tour of the South.  He would play 24 shows in 20 days, a grueling pace that did little to help a man already addicted to a host of drugs. Nor did the size of the entourage that travelled with him help his condition.  At the next stop in Houston, they took up 32 rooms at the Shamrock Hilton and another 25 at the Astroworld Hotel! All those folks wanted a piece of Elvis, further contributing to his deteriorating health.

As mentioned in our last post, Elvis Presley was part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's inaugural induction class in 1986. What else would you expect for the man nicknamed "The King".

This soundboard recording captures Elvis in Las Vegas on Janaury 27, 1973, 51 years ago today, a time when The King was on top of the world.  In late 1972, his single Burning Love reached #2 on The Billboard charts, and #1 on the Cashbox Top 40 list. The tune would be Elvis's 40th and final Top 40 hit. On January 28, 1973, MGM's film, Elvis On Tour, won a Golden Globe Award for best documentary. Two weeks prior to that, on January 14, Elvis has played a concert from Hawaii which was broadcast around the world via satellite to an audience of over 1 billion people. Ironically, the show was not broadcast live in the US as it conflicted with the Super Bowl. American audiences had to wait until April to see the concert. RCA released a live album entitled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which captured the concert in its entirety. The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, it would be all downhill for Elvis, however, from that point until his tragic death just 4 years later in 1977.

Elvis 1976 - Back To Back - #1: When The King took the stage ain Chicago on October 14, 1976, 347 years ago today, the sold our crowd was treated a much slimmer Elvis who was in fine voice, generating hope that the legendary singer was trying to regain his past form. Behind the scenes, however, Presley was dealing with a host of personal drama. He had hired a private investigator to try to prevent his former body guards, Red and Sonny West, from publishing a tell-all book about him. They declined a large cash offer, and just days after this show, The Star published an article entitled “Elvis’ Dramatic Plea To His Ex-Body Guards: Don’t Write This Book About Me.” Elvis was mortified that the issue went public, and fell deeper into a spiral of drug abuse and erratic behavior. Less than a year later, The King would be gone at the age of 42. Download this soundboard recording, yhen come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.  By the way - go here for a review of the show.  I partcularly liked when the writer compaine about the $12 tickets, $3 program, $5 posters, etc. Can you imagine what he'd think of today's prices for tickets and souveniers?!?

Elvis 1976 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1:  In March 1976, Elvis Presely launched his Bicentenial Tour, in honor of America's upcoming 200th birthday on July 4, complete with a special jumpsuit designed to commerate the historic occaision. This soundbaord recording captures Elvis during that difficult tour, in Omaha, on April 22, 1976, 47 years ago tody.  Download this one, then come back on April 27 for the 2nd part of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play.

1970s - #5: While today, Howard Stern has crowned himself King Of All Media, back in early 1973 that title belonged to Elvis. So, as Elvis took the stage in Las Vegas on February 21, 1973, a half century ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, he clearly was on top of the world. It would be all downhill for the King, however, from that point until his death in 1977.
