We detailed the Woodstock organizers efforts to get The Beatles to play Woodstock, and John Lennon's attmept to turn it into a John & Yoko appearnce, in a post earlier this month. This soundboard recording captures John some 3 years after Woodstock, making a rare concert appearance, on August 30, 1972, 52 years ago today.  He and Yoko, along with Stevie Wonder, Sha Na nNa, and Roberta Falc, played 2 shows at Madison Square Garden that day to raise funds for children dealing with mental challneges.  The early show was released as the album Live In New York.  This post brings you portions of the late show.  Thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the artwork and original files.

John Lennon 1972 - #2:  As promised, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring John Lennon and Yoko Ono c-hosting the The Mike Douglas show in February 1972. This one is a TV soundboard recording that captures the 4th day of John and Yoho's run on the show, on February 17, 1972, 47 years ago today. They play Imagine backed by Elephant's Memory, the band with whom they would soon record the Sometime in New York City album.

John Lennon 1972 - #1:  The Mike Douglas show was a daytime talk show that originated in Cleveland and later moved to Philadelphia.  One of the unique features of the show is that each week, Douglas was joined by a gust co-host. And perhaps no co-hosts in the history of the show were more unique than John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who joined Doglas for 5 shows from February 14 to February 18, 1972.  let's just say that the audinece for the Mike Douglas show wasn't quite the same demographic as the one Johnand Yoko normally appealed to. But that was exactly the point, as Yoko explained in an interview - "There’s such a gap between the young generation and the old generation now. Because this is a show that really communicates more with the older generation, we wanted to reach our hands out to them and say, 'Don’t be afraid of us. And we shouldn’t be to hostile to you either. Let’s work it together, because we have to work it together.'"  In addition to that sentiment, John, who was the target of the Nixon administration,  was trying to downplay his radical image to help avoid deportation. This TV soundboard recording captures the 3rd day of John and Yoho's run on the show, on February 16, 1972, 47 years ago today, featuring John dueting with Chuck Berry on Memphis and Johnny B. Old folks like me will remember when every Labor Day Weekend, a local TV station would broadcast the Jerry Lewis Telethon to raise money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. Children with the disease were often shown during the telethon, with announcers imploring folks to donate for Jerry's Kids. Of course, Dead Heads would later co-opt that phrase, to highlight their devotion to the the Dead's leader, Jerry Garcia. The telethon usually featured your typical for the era Las Vegas style entertainers, but occasionally, a rock superstar would appear. One such moment happened on September 4, 1972, 46 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording, when John Lennon & Yoko Ono joined Lewis on stage. In 1972, Lennon was the target of the Nixon administration, who hoped to deport the ex-Beatle for his association with extreme radical Yippie activists like Jerry Rubin and Angela Davis. Hardly the best company for Lennon to keep when petitioning for a Green Card. In an effort to show the U.S. government that he was wasn't a radical extremist, Lennon made a number of public appearances supporting various charities, including an appearance on Jerry's Telethon:  By the way, you can see video of that historic moment here.

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon, at the request of his friend journalist Geraldo Rivera, headlined 2 charity concerts to benefit the Willowbrook Home, a facility for learning disabled children. The event, held at Madison Square Garden was billed as “One To One”, and also featured Sha Na Na, Roberta Flack, and Stevie Wonder, New York Mayor John Lindsay declared the date, "One To One Day." Both concerts were filmed and recorded, with parts of the evening show broadcast on ABC Television while highlights from the afternoon set eventually were released on the 1986 album, Live In New York City. The shows, unfortunately, would be Lennon’s last full-length concerts following the breakup of The Beatles and his death in 1980. (He did, of course, sit in with Elton John for a few songs at a concert in 1974.). About a week prior to the shows, Lennon, wife Yoko, and his backing band, Elephant’s Memory, rehearsed for the One to One shows at SIR Studios in New York. This soundboard recording captures those sessions, on August 21 and 22, 1972, 4 decades ago yesterday and today. December 8, 1980 - it's hard to believe it was 30 years ago today that John Lennon was taken from us. I'll never forget how I heard the news. I was a senior at Princeton, working for the school newspaper. We were up late, putting the finishing touches on our semi-annual Arts & Entertainment issue. The lead story was a review of Lennon's Double Fantasy, his first album in over 5 years. We were just about to go to press when over the AP news wire came a special report -- John Lennon had been shot and killed. The world mourned John Lennon, and so did we, though we were able to work through our grief by turning our special issue into a celebration of his life. Tale a minute today to remember John. All we are saying is give peace a chance!
