In 1978, Italian singer Angelo Branduardi launched the first Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, playing concerts along with other European musicians in Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Switzerland. Two years later, he embarked on the 2nd Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, this time including American artists Stephen Stills and Richie Havens. This FM broadcast captures Stills, backed by the California Blues Band, on opening night of the tour, in Milan on July 15, 1980, 4 decades ago today.

Viet Nam Veterans Benefit Concert - 1987-07-04 - Landover, MD (FM)

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! Woodstock - 1969-08-15 - Bethel, NY (SBD)

It was billed as an Aquarian Exposition (this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius), as 3 days of Peace and Music. It became 4 days of Peace, Music and Mud and closed the NY Thruway. As the song says, by the time “we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong, and everywhere was a song and a celebration”. The anti war, hippie, flower power, anti-establishment counter cultural revolution that was brewing among the youth of America was on full display at Yasgur’s Farm. More than anything, it was the moment that defined a generation, and continues to resonate with people a half century later. Michael Lang, one of the four young men who produced the festival, once said "That's what means the most to me – the connection to one another felt by all of us who worked on the festival, all those who came to it, and the millions who couldn't be there but were touched by it." More has probably been written about Woodstock than almost any other musical event in history, and I most certainly could never do justice to describing the events, emotions, impact and legacy of those 4 days. What I can do, however, is post some of the incredible music that was made at Woodstock in 1969. Thanks to our friends at the Woodstock project, we can bring you 33 CDs filled with music,  interviews, newscasts, and much more. Today we have 7 CDs from Friday, August 15, 1969, 5 decades ago today, featuring among others, Richie Havens and Joan Baez. Rock Influences - 1984-06-09 - Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ (FM)

The launch of MTv in August 1981 revolutionized the music industry. Suddenly, folks were not just listening to their favorite music but hey were watching it. " I Want My MTv" became such a well known catch phrase that Dire Straits incorporated it into their classic track, Money For Nothing, inviting Sting to sing that line as part of the tune's coda. Videos went from simple tapes of a band playing a tune live to elaborate, mini movies costing millions to produce. While MTv in its easrly days primarily featured punk and new wave music, mainstream rock soon became part of the rotation. In addition, the station grew beyond videos, developing original programming such as Unplugged, the MTV Video Music Awards and Rock Influences. Launched in 1984, rock influences took a look at a current band or artist  by examining how ,they were influenced by the  prior generation of musicians.  The show featured live performances, usually filmed at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ, by both the current act and its influences. When REM performed at the Capitol on June 9, 1984, 44 years ago today, their rock influences, served as the opening act. This FM broadcast captures their opening set in its entirety, featuring tunes from John Sebastian, Richie Havens, Roger McGuinn, Jesses Colin Young and The Band!
