2010's - #6:  The year 2015 was a momentous one for Phil Lesh.  In late June/early July, he reunited with former Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti,2 shows in Santa Clara and 3 in Chicago. Dubbed the Fare Thee Well concerts, the shows were a celebration of the the band's 50th anniversary as well as the last time those 4 original Dead members intended to share the stage together.  In addition, his band Phil & Friends played a series of shows dedicated to each year in the Grateful Dead's long, storied history. To top off 2the year, Phil started a new band, called Communion, which featured his son Grahame Lesh. This webcast recording captures Communion's debut performance on January 30, 2015, 7 years ago today.

Joe Jackson - 1995-01-30 - Birmingham, UK (FM)

1990s - #6: To be blunt, I was less than happy when the Angry Joe Jackson of the late 1970s and early 1980s became Sentimental Joe with the release of songs like Stepping Out. I missed the unhappy, growling punk rocker behind songs such as I’m the Man, One More Time and Is She Really Going Out With Him.  Once Jackson moved from punk to Cole Porter, however, he was not headed back. His future albums included swing music, jazz,  and even attempts at classical composition, such as his 1994 disc, Night Music. This FM broadcast captures him on tour in support of Night Music, in Birmingham on January 30, 1995, 27 years ago today.

2000s - #6: In late January/early February 2002, The Who played 5 concerts in the UK in preparations for a full scale US tour in the Spring. On June 27, the day before the first date of that rum Bassist John Entwistle was found dead of a heart attack at 57 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Cocaine was found to have been a contributing factor.  The remaining 2 original members. Roger Daltrey and Peter Townshend decided to soldier on, with the tour launching on July1, with Pete Palladino on bass.  This ecellent audience recording captures the band during the earlier UK tour, on January 28, 2002, 2 decades ago today, one of the last concerts that Entwistle played prior to his tragic death.

Elvis Costello - 1979-01-27 - Cardiff, Wales (SBD) 

1970s - #6: In January 1979, Elvis Costello released his 3rd album, Armed Forces, although during production the working title for the disc was Emotional Fascism. The disc continued Costello’s run of commercial and critical success. Armed Forces climbed to # 10 on the Billboard charts in the US, and did even better in the UK, reaching the #2 position. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the album a grade of A-, while Rolling Stone wrote that it’s “an album that's a killer in several senses of the word.” In 2000, Q magazine placed Armed Forces at number 45 on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Then, in 2003, the album was ranked number 482 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This soundboard recording captures Costello on tour in support of Armed Forces, in Wales, on January 27, 1979, 43 years ago today!  he gets a little help from Dave Edmunds on Mystery Dance, though its a bit ironic Edmunds didn't play on Girls Talk, a song he recorded for the albim Repeat When Necessary and released as a single.

2010s - #5: In January 2011, Jimmy Buffett headed to the Land Down Under, for 4 concerts 3 in Australia and one New Zealand. This FM broadcast captures the last night in Sydney, on January 26, 21011, 11 years ago today. Unfortunately, right after the encores, Jimmy fell off the stage when he was blinded by some lights from the crowd, and lost his sense of where he was on stage. He suffered several injuries, fortunately none of them serious, but the New Zealand show had to be cancelled as a result. By the way - the artwork captures Jimmy just seconds before his fall.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1980-01-24 - Rodeo, CA (SBD)

1980s - #6:  The Jerry Garcia Band's 1980 winter tour was a magical ride, filled with outstanding performances.  Their February 28 show from Kean College has been officially released on the album, After Midnight. The album takes its name from the legendary After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight jam that closed the first of the 2 shows the band played that night. The March 1, 1980 shows at the Capitol Theater in Passaic were also officially released, selected as the first installment of the Garcia Live series.  I was at the early show at the Capitol, a concert that found Garcia playing a superb mix of covers, solo material and Grateful Dead tunes, including a blistering version of Deal, perhaps the hottest rendition of that tune I’ve ever been privileged to hear. This soundboard recording captures the band about a month prior, on the West Coast, on January 24, 1980, 42 years ago today.   The show ends with the very same  After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight jam found on the Kean College release!

1990s - 5: On September 27, 1997, Elton John released the album The Big Picture, his 26th studio album at that point in his career. The album was dedicated to Elton John’s friend, popular fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was murdered a few months before the album's release. The album did well commercially, reaching #9 in the US on the Billboard charts and climbing all the way to #3 in the UK. Despite that success, Elton’s long time friend and lyricist Bernie Taupin, considered this disc his least favorite of all their collaborations. Within days of the album’s launch, Elton took to the road in support of the disc. The Big Picture tour began on October 8, 1997 in Atlanta and ran all the way through the end of 1998, with a few brief interruptions in March, May and June so Elton could perform with Bill Joel as part of their Face to Face tour. This  soundboard recording captures Elton in Nashville on January 23, 1998, 2 dozen years ago today, near the end of the first leg of the tour. Unfortunately, the recording is missing the last 3 songs of the encore.

By the way, the name of the festival was not related to Hollywood, California but rather was taken from a brand of cigarettes that sponsored the event. Robert Plant headlined the 1994 edition of the festival, along with Aerosmith, Poison, Ugly Kid Joe, Sepultura, Live and Whitney Houston. This soundboard recording captures Plant’s set from January 22, 1994, 28 years ago today.

Peter Frampton - 1976-01-21 - Detroit, MI (Ex Aud)

1970s - #5: When Peter Frampton played Cobo Arena in Detroit on January 21, 1976, 46 years ago today as captured in this excellent audience recording February 14, 1976,  he probably had no idea that he was on the verge of becoming one of rock's biggest star.  No one could have been prepared for what was about ti  transpire with his released 5th album, released about a month earlier. on January 6, 1976.  The 2 disc live recording. Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. Then on February 24 1987, he capped off an incredible debut year by winning a Grammy for Best New Artist! 2000s - #4: Eric Clapton's 2006/2007 World tour spanned 11 months, from May 2006 to April 2007, and took Slowhand to 4 different continents - North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Supporting Eric during that run were 2 other legendary guitarists - Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II. Perhaps Truck's connection to the Allman Brothers reminded EC of his time working with Duane, as the tour set lists reached back to the days of Derek & The Dominos. In addition to Layla, each night Clapton played Dominos standards such as Tell The Truth, Got To Get Better In A Little While, Little Wing, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad and Anyday. This excellent audience recording  captures EC during that tour, in China on January 20, 2007, 15 years ago today.

2000s - #3: In February 1991, Cohn released his self titled debut album, which climbed to #38 on the Billboard charts, propelled by the single Walking in Memphis, That tune, which describes Cohn's experience visiting Memphis in 1986, went to #13 on the Billboard Singles charts. Cohn won a Grammy in 1992 for Best New Artist, and was nominated in the category Best Male Pop Vocalist for his performance of Walking In Memphis. The tune was also nominated for Song Of The Year. While he never again reached that level of commercial success, Cohn continued to release albums and tour over the next 2 decades.  This excellent audience recording captures him in Asheville on January 19, 2008, 14 years ago today.

2000s - #2: On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States, becoming the foirst black man to hold the nation's highest elected office.  Two days prior, on January 18, 2009, 13 years ago today, the "We Are One", inaugural concert took place at the Lincoln Memorial. The concert featured performances and readings of historical passages by more than three dozen celebrities. Attendance was free to the public, drawing a crowd of over 400,000. HBO aired the concert live on an open feed, enabling anyone with cable television to watch the event. This FM recording of the HBO feed captures U2's set, which appropriately featured Pride (In The Name of Love) the band's tribute to civil rights leader Martin Luther King, who helped paved the way for Obama.

Led Zeppelin - 1975-01-18 - Bloomington, MN (SBD)

1970s - #4: When Led Zeppelin launched its 1975 North American concert tour in January of that year, it marked the 10th time the band had toured on that continent! It was the first time, however, they had played live in over 18 months, and the fact they were rusty was evident in some of the early shows on the tour. The band also was in the process of incorporating new material into their set list from their soon to be released Physical Graffiti album. Five songs from the album, Sick Again, In My Time of Dying, Kashmir, Trampled Under Foot and The Wanton Song, all found their way into the set list at some point during the tour, though by the end of the run only the first 4 were still being played. When the double album was finally released in February, it would go on to sell 8 million copies and hit number 1 on both the US and UK charts. Physical Graffiti's impact was so great that every previous Led Zep disc climbed back into the Billboard top 200 soon after it was released. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #70 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time while The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included the disc in its The Definitive 200: Top 200 Albums of All-Time. This soundboard recording captures the opening night of that historic tour in support of Physical Graffiti, in Bloomington, MN on January 18, 1975, 47 years ago today.

Tedeschi Trucks -  2019-01-17 - Cedar Rapids, IA (Ex Aud)

2010s - #4: For the Tedeschi Trucks Band, 2019 would reflect Dicken's novel, A Tale of two Cities - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  In February, the band released their 4th studio album, Signs, which would go to #28 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The disc would also reach #3 on the rock album, chart, #2 on the folk album charts and climb all the way to #1 on the Blues album chart.  Yet, around the exact same time, long time band member Kofi Burbridge passed away at age of 57, having suffered numerous health issues, including a heart attack the prior year. Ironically, Signs, which had been influenced by the deaths of TTB band mentors Bruce Hampton, Leon Russell, and Butch Trucks, now became a tribute to the band's fallen comrade.  This excellent audience recording captures the band just weeks before the album's release and Kofi's death, in Iowa, on January 17, 2019, 3 years ago today.

1990s - #2: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, that band released the album August & Everything After, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This FM broadcast captures the band after their breakthrough, a year to the day of of standing in for Van the Man, in New York on January 16, 1994, 28 years ago today. They finish the set with the same tune they played at the Rock Hall Inductions, Van's Caravan!

2010s - #3:  In December 2013, Neil Young announced that he would perform four benefit shows in his native Canada to raise money for the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) Legal Defense Fund.  The ACFN was working to ensure that the Canadian government abided by the terms of Treaty 8, which granted certain protections for the tribe's traditional lands and eco-systems. Just another in a long line of efforts by Neil to use his music to further social causes. This excellent audience recording captures the 2nd of those 2 benefit shows, in Winnipeg on January 16, 2014, 8 years ago today.

1960s - #5: On January 15, 1967, 55 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, the Rolling Stones made their 4th appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.  And what an appearance it was. The Stones were set 2 perform 2 songs that night, Lets Spend The Night Together and Ruby Tuesday, the A and B sides of their just released single.  Mr. Sullivan, however, took exception to the lyrics of the A Side of the single, informing Jagger that he would need to change the line "Lets Spend The Night Together" to "Lets Spend Some Time Together."  I guess Ed though American society would crumble at the though of 2 people sleeping together overnight! The Stones gave in the Sullivan's demands (unlike the Doors who later in the year were asked to change the lyric "you know we couldn't get much higher from the tune Light My Fire), though Mick rolled his eyes each and every time he sang the revised verse, as seen in the video below.

Grateful Dead -  1979-01-15 - Springfield, MA (SBD)

1970s - #3:  On January 7 and 8, 1979, the Grateful Dead played their first 2 shows at Madison Square Garden.  They would go on to play 510 more, setting a record at the time of 52 concerts at that venue (their total would later be surpassed by Billy Joel, Elton John and Phish). I joined them on their MSG debut, catching the 2nd night. It was a good show, but no where in the list of the best I have seen.  A few night's later, the Dead went out to the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, and delivered two shows I will always be disappointed I missed. On January 10, they launched in to Dark Star before Drums, and then played St. Stephen later in the 2nd set.  The next night,  they encored with Casey Jones. Dark Star and Casey Jones hadn't been played on the East Coast since 1974. Incredibly, the rendition of St Stephen would be the last for 4 years, as the band would play it just 3 times in October 1983 and then retire it for good,  Four days after the Nassau Coliseum shows, the Dead were in Springfield on January 15, 1979, 43 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording. They once again performed Casey Jones to end the 2nd set, putting the finishing touches on a tremendous Playing In The Band > Drums > Space > Playing In The Band segue.

Robert Cray - 1980-01-14 - Palo Alto CA (SBD) 

1980s - #4: In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with the hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. This soundboard recording captures him early on in his climb to stardom, at the Keystone in Palo Alto on January 14, 1980, 43 years ago today.
