Unfortunately when Sir Paul arrived in Japan, he came down with a virus that forced him to postpone, and then cancel the entire run. Those shows were rescheduled for Spring 2015, starting with in Osaka on April 21, 2015.  This IEM matrix recording captures the first night in Tokyo, on April 23, 2015, 8 years ago today. Elvis 1976 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1:  In March 1976, Elvis Presely launched his Bicentenial Tour, in honor of America's upcoming 200th birthday on July 4, complete with a special jumpsuit designed to commerate the historic occaision.  Presley's tour would criss cross the country, taking occaisional breaks for his annual residencies in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. The schedule would have taken its toll on a healthy man half The King's age.  But Elvis was 41, overweight, suffering from depression, dealing with legal issues, stressed by relationship problems, and hopelessly addicted to drugs.  As a result, some nights on tour, he was still, in the words of the Kansas City Star "one of the most charismatic entertainers in America" while on others, "it was like watching a parody of a dying legend", in the words of reviewer Denise Kusel.  This soundbaord recording captures Elvis during that difficult tour, in Omaha, on April 22, 1976, 47 years ago tody.  Download this one, then come back on April 27 for the 2nd part of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play.

Bruce Springsteen - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in the Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. Some highlights included a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey and a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, which ended the tour. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Sprinsgteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. Now the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This ALD matrix recording captures Bruce and the E Street Band near the end of the tour, on April 21, 2000, 23 years ago today in Cahrlotte. Allman Brothers Band - 1972-04-16 - New York, NY (SBD)

Allman Brothers 1972 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: On October 29, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band lost their co-founder, brother, guitarist, and spiritual leader in a tragic motorcycle accident. The death of Duane Allman could have crippled the band, but brother Greg, Dickie Betts, Berry Oakley Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and Berry Oakley soldiered on. They went back out on the road in 1972, with Oakley playing a major role in keeping the band together, both on and off the stage. Incredibly, Oakley, the new de facto leader of the band would meet the same fate as his predecessor. He also died in a motorcycle accident, in November 1972, just over a year after Duane, at an intersection 3 blocks from where the guitarist perished. Even that tragedy, however, could not stop the Allmans. In 1973 they who once again rose from the ashes, releasing the single Ramblin’ Man which went to #2 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band, on their first tour without Duane, on April 16, 1972, 51 years ago today, at the Academy of Music in New York City. Phil & Friends 2001 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock,and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this soundboard recording from Orlando from April 15, 2001, 22 years ago today. Warren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints with Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. Add Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings and you have a virtual Mount Rushmore of Country Music. The superstar quartet recorded 3 albums together between 1985 and 1995: Highwaymen in 1985, Highwaymen 2 in 1990 and The Road Goes On Forever in 1995. This sounndboard recording capturs them on tour in 1993 in support of their 2nd disc, in Landover on April 13, 1993, 3 decades  ago today. Grateful Dead - 1988-04-11 - Detroit, MI (SBD)

Grateful Dead 1988 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1:  Certain years in Grateful Dead history have moments that immediately come to mind. For example, in 1987, Gracia made his trumphant return from a diabetic coma, the band released In The Dark, the Touch of Grey video took over MTv, the Dead toured with Dylan, and the band played a show for the ages at Madison Square Garden on 9/18/87. In 1989, moments like the Formerly The Warlock shows in Hampton, the entire summer run, and The Nightfall of Diamonds concert on 10/16/1989 all spring to mind, not to mention Garcia's fall solo tour featuring Clarence Clemons.  And then there's 1988. That year seems to get lost between the other 2 that sandwiched it.  I saw the band 8 times that year, all at MSG.  None of those concerts would rank in the top 10 I ever saw, but none were anywhere near the bottom of my list.  Each and every one was a solid, well played show, building on the emotional moments from 1987, and setting the stage for the mammoth 1989 to 1991 run. It's a sadly underappreciated year that doesn't get enough attention.. So, to make up for that, here's a soundboard recording from Detroit from April 11, 1988, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back on April 30 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play.
