I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. 

Today's post captures Van on tour in support of his 31st studio album, Magic Time, which was released on May 17, 2005. The disc debuted at #25 on the US Billboard charts and #3 in the UK. The title track deals with searching the past in order to capture a magic moment almost lost in memory. Many of the other tunes of the disc have the same nostalgic feel to them. For example, 2 tunes from Magic Time evoke memories of songs from the album St. Dominic’s Preview. The Lion This Time harkens back to Listen To The Lion, while Gypsy In My Soul echoes the song Gypsy. This FM broadcast finds Van in Germany on August 5, 2005, 21 years ago today, blending both past and present as he plays tunes from Magic Time as well as a host of earlier classics.

With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. 

This primarily FM broadcast, with some audience tracks intersperrded, captures Van in Italy on June 29, 1989, 37 years ago today.  Unlike the perfromance I saw later that year, Van skipped the blues for a setlist filled with classics.

Van "The Man" Morrison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.  The ever reclusive and unpredictable Mr, Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the honor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  

This soundboard recording features Van Morrison from The Rockpalast on April 4, 1982, 44 years ago this very day. An interesting note is that the concert actually started a 11 pm on April 3 with a set from Rick James. Van came on second, starting his performance at 1:00 am in the morning on April 4 and he would be followed by the Kinks, whose set we'll bring you a little later today! This show took place about 2 months after Van released the album Beautiful Vision, a disc which has met which mixed critical reviews over the years. For example, while Robert Christgau gave the disc a grade of A-, reviewer John Milward called it “emphatically half-great.” Opinions about the disc are so divided that Rolling Stone magazine has flipped flopped its opinion of Beautiful Vision over the years. When it first debuted, they gave the disc a 4 out of 5 rating. However, years later, they ranked it as one of the “15 worst albums by great bands.” Personally, I’m huge fan of the album and of songs such as Dweller On The Threshold, Cleaning Windows, Northern Muse, She Gives Me Religion and the title track.

1960s - #2: Van Morrison's legendary career began in April 1964 as part of the band, Them. The band scored two UK hits in 1965 with Baby, Please Don't Go at #10 and Here Comes the Night at #2  The latter song and Mystic Eyes were both Top 40 hits in the US. Of course, the band's most well known tune, and one Van the Man stills plays in concert today, over a half century later, was Gloria.  Van left Them in late 1966, embarking on a solo career   This soundboard recording captures him backed by the The Blizzards, in the Netherlands, on March 9, 1967, just 59 years ago today and just about 3 weeks before he went into studio in New York, where he would record what still might be his most well know song, Brown Eyed Girl.

You see, he's yet to play Someone Like You, which is our wedding song, at any of the 7 concerts we've attened. Maybe next time.

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Van in San Francisco on December 16, 1992, 33 years ago today.

Van Morrison - 1988-07-24 - St. Andrews, Scotland (SBD)

The 2nd Fife Aid festival (the first was held in 1985 in the wake of Live Aid) to raise money for environmentally sustainable projects in Africa was held on July 23 and 24, 1988 in St Andrews, Scotland. The festival was plagued, however, by poor organization; bad weather; the loss of several key acts such as David Bowie, which in turn resulted in Ted Turner deciding not to televise the event; and the refusal of its headline act, Van Morrison, to allow his name to be used in any of the advertising for the festival. In addition, the ever moody Van the Man only agreed to do the gig on the understanding that he would be backed by a band of local musicians. That way, he would not have to fly his normal band in from London. Van rehearsed with the Scottish group on Saturday, then closed the Fife Aid festival on Sunday at 9 pm. This soundboard recording captures his entire set that July 24, 1988, 38 years ago today, though the sound is a bit muddy, probably due to the high winds that accompanied the rain. In any event, I’ve posted it for 2 reasons - first, it fits our Festival theme for this month and second, it also includes a rare live performance of Someone Like You, which just happens to be my wedding song. This post is dedicated to my bride - it’s been 33 years since we’ve been married, 35 since we met, the best years of my life.

Its ironic, to say the least, the the notoriously grumpy, private, and unpredicatble Van Morrison seems to love to play outdoor festivals in front of thousands of happy concert goers. This FM broadcast captures him at Blues Peer on July 21, 1991, 34 years ago today.  Van was on tour in support of his 20th studio album, entitled Enlightenment, which had been rleased in October 1990.  The disc went to #62 on the Billboard Album Charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #5 on the British charts. Reviews were strong with Rolling Stone rating the album 4 stars and Robert Christgau giving it a B+.

Solomon Burke - 2004-07-09 - Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland (FM)

Launched in 1967, the Montreux Jazz festival is one of the longest running and largest events of its type in the world. The festival was initially held at the original Montreux Casino, which burned down in December 1971 during Frank Zappa's performance, as referenced in Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. The festival was held then in other auditoriums in Montreux, until it could return to the rebuilt Casino in 1975. The festival continued to grow, and in 1993, it moved to the larger Montreux Convention Centre, which features 2 venues Auditorium Stravinski (capacity 3,500) and Miles Davis Hall (capacity 1,800).  As with other jazz festivals, Montreux has embraced other generes of music over the years, with artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Santana, and Ringo Starr, just to name 4, all payling the festival.  To give you some additional perspective on how diverse a group of performers have opalyed Montreux, we'll bring you a host of shows this month from the festival,  none by any of the artists listed above!. Well start with this FM broadcast of Solomon Burke from July 9, 2004, 21 years ago today. For those not familiar with the late great Solomon Burke, he's considered to be one of the founding fathers of soul music in the 1960s. He had a string of hits including Cry to Me, If You Need Me, Got to Get You Off My Mind, Down in the Valley" and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, the last of which was featured prominently in the Blue Brothers movie. Burke had a host of nicknames including as King Solomon, the King of Rock 'n' Soul, the Bishop of Soul and even the Muhammad Ali of Soul. I saw him in June 2003, serving as the lead-in to Van Morrison, who makes an appearnce on What I'd Say at this performance.

The Vienne Jazz Festival, held near Lyon, France, originated in July 1981, and continues through today.  The festival lasts 2 weeks, and over the years has not only featured jazz legends such as Stan Getz and Herbie Hancock but also rock artists like Chuck Berry and Ike Turner.  This FM Broadcast captures Van Morrison at the festival on July 1, 2022, 23 years ago today.  Morrison was on tour in support of the album Down The Road, which he had released in May 2002.  The disc went to #26 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album since Saint Dominic's Preview in 1972, 3 decades earlier! Down The Road featured blues and R&B music, reflecting some of Van’s earliest influences.

On September 19, 1970, at Worthy Farm between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle in the county of Somerset, six miles east of the town of Glastonbury, the T-Rex headlined the first Glastonbury Festival before a growth of 1500 people. Over 4 decades later, the Glastonbury Festival, now held in June over a 4 day period, is still going strong, with crowds a 100 times larger than those at the first concert! Artists such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, The Who, and U2 and have all headlined the festival, and we will bring you all of those and more later this month. The radio station wanted to ensue that jazz was featured on the air, reflecting its presence in the Copenhagen club scene.  Van Morrison has sat in the Danish Radio Big Band on numerous occasions. 1970s - #4: In February 1974,  Van Morrison released the classic live album It's Too Late Too Stop Now which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. This soundboard recording captures him durng that 1974 run, in Denmark, on April 6, 1974, a half century ago today.

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. As much as we love seeing Van, howvver, he's lived up to Rule #7 in my book:: "The Set List - The Bad News - The Band Will Never Play Everything You Want To Hear."  You see, he's yet to play SOmeone Like You, which is our wedding song, at any of the 7 concerts we've attened.  Maybe next time.

2000s - #4: Three years after releasing Back on Top in 1999, Van Morrison had another significant chart success with the album, Down The Road. The disc, released in May 2002, went to #26 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album since Saint Dominic's Preview in 1972, 3 decades earlier! Similar to Back on Top, Down The Road features blues and R&B music, reflecting some of Van’s earliest influences. This soundboard recording captures Van on July 17, 2003, 2 decades ago today, in Berlin Italy on tour in support of Down The Road. The download also features a host of bonus tracks, including duets with Ray Charles and Bob Dylan.
