One of my favorite rock trivia questions is the following: "Name the only 2 bands that have all 4 members inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice?" The answer: "The Beatles and CSNY".  But there's a catch to the question! You see, the Beatles were inducted as a group, and then every member was inducted individually.  But CSNY was never inducted as a group!  CSN got in as a group, and Neil Young as a solo artist. Neil and Stephen Stills got their second inductions as members of Buffalo Springfield! Graham Nash got his 2nd induction as a member of The Hollies and David Crosby garnered his second as a member of the Byrds! 

This ALD recording captures the foursome in San Jose on April 5, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.  They were on the road for their Tour of America, a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland.

2000s - #3: When CSNY concluded their "Reunion Tour" at Wembley Stadium in late 1974, probably no one would have guessed that the foursome would not tour again for over 25 years.  In that time, the 4 band members worked together in various configurations (most notably the CSN trio) and even appeared together for special events such as Live Aid in 1985, but a full CSNY tour would not take place until the turn of the century.  Needless to say, therefore, the announcement of the CSNY2K tour, taking its name from the way overblown Y2K computer scare, was a major event and tickets sold out in a matter of minutes once they went on sale.  I was fortunate enough to get 2 for so the April 9,2000 show at the Continental Arena in NJ.  CSNY did not disappoint, playing 3 sets, 2 electric sandwiching an acoustic one, that included all their classics, as well as solo material, Buffalo Springfield tunes and even a nod to Crosby's days with the Byrds, when the band broke out 8 Miles High!  This soundboard recording captures CSNY during that historic tour, on March 14, 2000 in Atlanta, 26 years ago today.

Believe it or not, CSNY has made only 2 appearances at Farm Aid, in 1990 and then again at the 15th anniversary show in 2000. We'll have that second performance for you later this month. 

This soundboard recording goes back 9 years prior to the first Farm Aid, capturing the last night of  CSNY’s tumultuous 1974 tour at Wembley Stadium in London on September 14, 1974, 51 years ago today. The band, which has been driven apart in 1970 by tensions between the the four members, reformed in early 1974 to launch a nationwide tour. On opening night in Seattle, the band showed their total lack of planning, mapping out a 44 (yes – 44!) song set that they thought would last just a bit more than 3 hours. Well, at 12:35 am, 3 ½ hours into the show, they still had 9 songs to play. They plunged ahead, finishing the show, but that decision had enormous consequences. For future shows, some songs were trimmed off the set list, while others were reshuffled in the line up, pleasing none of the 4 band members. Tensions would continue to mount throughout the tour, and when it finally ended, so did CSNY for over a ¼ century. While there would be few special appearances, such as Live Aid in 1985, CSNY would not tour again until 2000!

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. In 1988, The Beatles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and in the years that followed, each member was inducted individually as well. So, what does that have to do with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young?  Well, it seems that CSNY is the only band other than the Beatles to have all 4 members inducted into the Rock Hall twice! The ironic twist, however, is that CSNY was never indducted to the Hall Of Fame as a group.  Confused? Let me try to clear that up for you.  You see, CSN was inducted as a group and Neil Young as a solo performer.  Then Stills and Young each received a 2nd induction as members of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby a 2nd as part of The Byrds, and Nash a 2nd for his time with the Hollies. Its only fitting that CSNY's on again, off again tortured and twisted tale would include a completely convuluted Rock & Roll Hall of fame legacy!

A week after their historic performance at Woodstock, CSNY took up resience at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles for 7 consecutive performances fom August 25 to 31. This excellent audience recording captures most of the last night at the Greek (it appears Find The Cost of Freedom, the last song of the electricset is missing), on August 31, 1969, 53 years ago today.  Of interest is that the notes indicate that CSNY opened for Blind Faith,  Those 2 bands are often considered the first 2 "super groups" - bands composed of musicians who had already been successful with other bands. In CSNY's case, Neil and Stephen had played with Buffalo Springfield, David with The Byrds and Graham with The Hollies. Blind Faith featured Eric Clapton and  Ginger Baker who had played with Cream, anlonside Steve Winwood who had garened fame both with Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group.

1960s - #2: After that historic performance at Woodstock, CSNY returned to the West Coast for a series of concerts at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in late August, followed by 2 television tapings. On September 1, the band taped Down By The River for broadcast on the debut episode of the program The Music Scene, which was broadcast on ABC on September 22. Other artists taped for that episode included James brown, Three Dog Night, Buck Owens, Tom Jones and The Beatles! Five days later, on September 6, 1969, 52 years ago this very day, CSNY was back at ABC studios, this time to tape an episode of the Tom Jones show. According to Rolling Stone, the band somehow convinced Neil that the audience for Tom Jones was hip enough to get their music. Years later, Neil regretted that decision, feeling it was an embarrassing situation. Whatever Neil’s or your opinion of the appearance, this soundboard recording captures both songs, CSNY recorded for the show, You Don’t Have To Cry, with some beautiful 3 part harmonies from Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Long Time Gone, featuring Tom Jones himself on lead vocals!. PS - just yesterday I found the version of Down By The River recorded on September 1, so I threw that in as a bonus track!

On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that!  That firs concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 3 dozen years, the effort has raised well over $60 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers.  This soundboard recording captures Neil's set at Farm Aid 4, on April 7, 1990. 31 years ago today.

In 2000, they reunited for the first time since 1974 for the CSNY2K tour, the name being derived from the infamous Y2K computer scare that turned out to be much ado about nothing. In 2006, they launched the Freedom Of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George W. Bush. In between, in 2002, the quartet embarked on the Tour of America. a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland. CSNY 1969 - Back to Back - #1: The Big Sur Folk Festival took place on the weekend of September 13 and 14, 1969, and featured, in addition to CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Dave Mason and john Sebastian, just to name a few. The entire event was documented in a 1971 film entitled Celebration at Big Sur. CSNY played 2 full sets each day, though only 3 of their songs are included in the film. In addition, while several bootlegs circulate from the festival, none of them capture either day’s CSNY performance its entirety. What we’re left with is partial recordings from each day. In addition, the original text file for these recordings had some errors in terms of which tracks were played on each day, especially regarding Dave Mason’s appearance with CSNY. Using 2 very accurate sources, Ghosts On The Road and  CSNY Set Lists, I was able to paint a better picture of which songs were played each day. So, today, we bring you a high quality audience (or maybe even a soundboard) recording of 8 tunes from CSNY’s performance on September 13, 1969, 51 years ago today. CSNY 1970 - Back to Back - #4:  Over the last 3 days, we’ve brought you the June 4, 5 and 6 shows from CSNY’s legendary run at the Fillmore East in 1970. Today we have a soundboard recording from the June 7 show, 50 years ago today, which while incomplete, still helps you understand why CSNY, along with Blind Faith,  were considered the first rock “super groups. These shows were among the first CSNY played after recording and releasing Ohio, a tune that placed accountability for the tragic shootings at Kent State right at the feet of President Nixon. The tune was also a pivotal moment in the band’s opposition to the policies of the Nixon administration both at home and in Viet Nam. Download this one, therefore, to relive a time when rock music and anti-establishment were almost synonymous.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 1970-06-06 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

CSNY 1970 - Back To Back - #3:  Here's the 3rd of our 4 shows featuring CSNY at the Fillmore East.  In June 1970, CSNY released their protest anthem, Ohio, which responded to the tragedy of the shootings at Kent State by the National Guard, which killed 4 students. Recorded on May 15, 11 days after the shootings and released just a few weeks later, Ohio features some of Neil Young's most biting lyrics, especially the line "Tin soldiers and Nixon coming", which laid the tragedy at the feet of the President. The song initiated the band's public opposition to Nixon Administration and the war in Viet Nam, a campaign that would continue until his resignation in 1974 (but that's a story for another post). At almost that exact same moment in time, CSNY arrived in New York for 6 shows at the legendary Fillmore East, from June 2 to June 7. Those shows included some of the first live versions of Ohio! This soundboard, from June 6, 1970, 5 decades ago today, features the complete acoustic and electric sets, from the penultimate night of the Fillmore run. The show clearly captures the mood of the times, where rock and roll played a prominent part in the protest movements against "the establishment".
