On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first festival, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Fam Aid 1986, held in Manor, Texas on July 4, 1986, 39 years ago today.  In addition to all the artists who performed live in Texas, the organizers simulcast portions of a concert in Buffalo featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead!

2010s - #4:  For his 80th birthday in June 2016, Kris Kristofferson releasaed a 25 track  collection of songs recorded over three days in the summer of 2014. Enitled the The Cedar Creek Sessions, the two-disc set featured new takes on some of Kristofferson’s most revered tunes, including Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down, Help Me Make It Through the Night, For the Good Times and Me and Bobby McGee.  All Music gave the album 5 stars and Rollling Stone wrote the "performances reflect Kristofferson’s craft and bone-dry conviction with the sort of integrity that can only be achieved when such a seasoned songwriter revisits his own history. The disc earned Kristofferson a Grammy Award nomination for Best Americana Album.  This FM broadcast captures Kristofferson just 3 months after the release of The Cedar Creek Sessions, in Sweden on September 18, 2016, 6 uears ago today.

Viet Nam Veterans Benefit Concert - 1987-07-04 - Landover, MD (FM)

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! The Highwaymen- Together and Solo #3:  In November 1972, Kris Kristofferson released his 4th solo album, Jesus was a Capricorn. The disc sold over $1 million cpies, was certified gold, went to #1 on the country charts and to #31 on the Billboard album charts. The first day of the three-day Hultsfred Festival 2004 featured The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Meshuggah, Bright Eyes The Roots and country music legend, Kris Kristofferson. Reviews from the show glowing noted that "Now that Johnny Cash is no longer around, this Highwayman seems to be picking up the slack singing for the downtrodden. With only his guitar and harmonica, he put on a show that’s passionately forceful. Affable and heartfelt (”If you see any of my relatives, tell ‘em I wasn’t as drunk as I was the last time I was here”), the crowd couldn’t agree more."  Thsi soundboard recording captures that magnificent performance from June 17, 2003, a dozen years ago this very day.

During his legendary career, Kris Kristofferson could frequently be found on stage at the also legendary night club, the Bottom Line in New York.  He played the venue in January 1979, March 1986, May 1986, May 1987, June 1988, January 1989, February 1990, March 1991, July 1991, August 1992, August 1993, February 1994 and September 1995.  The February 1994 show, which also featured Lou reed, saw DJ Vin Scelsa interview the duo about their careers, in between performances of their most famous tunes. That show was officially released in 2017on the disc, In Their Own Words With Vin Scelsa. This FM broadcast goes back to Kristofferson';s first run at the Bottom Line, on January 5, 1979, 33 years ago today.
