Ratdog @ Furthur 1996 - Back To Back - #1: When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and then as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Ratdog, and the Allstar Jam that ended each show, in Saratoga during the 1996 Furthur Festival on July 6, 1996, 30 years ago today. While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw the late, great Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992 at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month, was a concert arena set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a buck. 

This soundboard recording captures Weir some 8 years later, fronting Ratdog at the Gathering Of The Vibes Festival in Bridgeport on June 24, 2000, 26 years ago today.  Weir and Ratdog get a little help from Les Claypool on several tunes.

Ratdog 2003 - Back To Back - #1: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and bandmate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though rmore recently he spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band, the Wolf Bros and Dead & Company.  He left us just about a month a go - we'll miss him dearly - fortunately, the music never stops and keeps the memories alive. Bob Weir & Ratdog - 1995-08-09 - Hampton Beach, NH (SBD)

Three decades ago today, on August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia's long strange trip came to an end as he passed away in his sleep, succumbing to heart failure brought on by years of drug abuse. Ironically, he died at Serenity Knolls, a California treatment center for the very demons that finally ended his life. His brother in music, Bob Weir, who had played side by side with Garcia for some 30 years as part of the Grateful Dead, had a concert scheduled for that night in Hampton Beach, NH, on the other side of the continent. Weir would have been forgiven if he had cancelled the show and flew back to the Bay Area upon hearing the news. Instead, he courageously took the stage to pay tribute to Jerry the only way he knew how. As he said at the outset of the show, "Well, if there's anything our friend taught is, it's that music can be used to ease us through the sad times." Despite personal pain and loss, Weir delivered a stunning set of music, adjusting lyrics as he went along, in homage to his lost companion. For example, during Throwing Stones, he chanted "Papa's gone, we are on our own!" Bassist Rob Wasserman turned his solo into a moving rendition of Amazing Grace, which he dedicated to Garcia. The night ended the only way it could have, with Weir singing the sadly appropriate Knockin' on Heaven's Door, a song normally performed by Jerry to close Dead shows. As Weir left the stage, the crowd erupted in cries of "Jerry, Jerry", followed by the "Not Fade Away" chant (you know our love will not fade away), that for every Deadhead was a symbol of their love for the band and its music. Those of use who loved the Dead still miss Jerry. Our love will not fade away. Bob did his life long friend, and himself, proud that August 9 night. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as Campfire Band, Dead & Company, and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording recording captures Weir & Ratdog on May 5, 2000, a quarter century ago today, in Atlanta.

1990s - #7: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the RatDog Revue. They played their first show as RatDog on August 8, 1995 and would continue to play live shows well into the 21st century.  The soundboard recording captures Weir and Ratdog in Albany, on October 31, 1997, 27 years ago today.

As discussed in posts earlier this month, Bob Weir appeared at Woodstock as a member of the Grateful Dead, trying to play guitar and avoid getting electrocuted at the same time! This soundboard recording captures Weir 26 years later, fronting Ratdog, at the Tower Theater on August 25, 1995, 29 years ago today. Ths 4th show of this tour, on August 9, took place the same night that Weir lost his brother in music, Jerry Garcia, who passed away from heart issues caused by years of drug abuse.  Weir turned that show, and the rest of the tour into a tribute to Garcia, ending most shows such as the one posted here, with a version of Knockin on Heaven's Door.

Ratdog Furthur 1996 - Back to Back - #1: When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Ratdog, and the Allstar Jam that ended each show, in Mansfield in during the 1996 Furthur Festival on July 10, 1996, 28 years ago today.
