As mentioned in yesterday's post, Jimmy Buffett was part of the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class, along with such artists as Peter Frampton, Dave Matthews, Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner, Cher, and Mary J. Blige. James Taylor handled the induction speech.  The postumous induction - Buffett had passed away unexpectedly in September 2023 - was for "Musical Excellence", another nebulous category which no one can really define. Afterall aren't all the folks inducted as performers excellent? If not, why the hell are they in the Hall of Fame? In addition, the Hall continued its confusing pattern of "sometimes we do, sometimes we don't" when it comes to backing bands by failing to induct the Coral Reefer Band.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Buffett in Sacramento on October 20, 2016, a decade ago today. It was the next to last night of his I Don't Know tour, which had begin in May and consisted of 26 dates, including 2 in France.  Buffett rarely played Europe, as the BufettNews website lists only 23 concerts total on that continent in his long storied career. France was his favorite European destination, accounting for 19 of those concerts, all in the "City of Lights".

Here's another show that I was actually at! As I've mentioned previously on this blog, my wife and I took our twin boys to their first concert on Father's Day 2015 - Sir Paul McCartney at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  To say they had a good time would  be an understatement. So, when he scheduled a show at MetLife Stadium on August 7, 2016, a year ago today, they begged me to get tickets.  We did and Macca Round 2 was just as good as the first show. And very touching for all of us as well - you see it would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul must have know because he played Birthday during the encores, the first time I ever heard him play it live! I've provided you 3 different tapes of this show in the download, and all sound good but I think the 3rd one (PM16NJ) sounds the best.  Enjoy. And oh, by the way - at my boy's request we saw Sir Paul again next on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden and on June 18, 2022, again at Met Life Stadium.  That made 4 times going to see Macca as a family, plus my wife and I saw him 5 times prior - in 1993, 2002, twice in 2005, and in 2011!  If you like what you've rerad in this post, you'll find more tales of family and music in my book.

2010s - #7: The 1976 album Frampton Come's Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. The disc that came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. If you want to read more about the impact of Frampton Comes Alive and the dramatic changes in music in 1976, pick up the book, I Hate New Music, by Dave Thompson. In any event, this webcast recording captures Frampton perfroming 3 songs from his landmark disc for the NPR show, Tiny Desk Concert, 4 decades after the release of his landmark album, on March 17, 2016, 10 years ago today.

Before long all the group members quit their other projects and began concentrating on the group full-time. The band would often recreate set lists from a particular night in Grateful Dead history. Kadlecik had an uncanny ability to emulate Jerry Garcia's playing and singing style. So much so, that in 2009, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, original members of the Grateful Dead, asked him to join Furthur, one of the many projects that the former members of the Dead embarked on after the death of Jerry Garcia. He would also later play as part of Phil Lesh & Friends. This soundboard recording captures John out on his own, in Richmond, fronting on January 30, 2016, a decade ago today.

The disc includes the track 50,000, written the week of Prince's death, which pay's tribute to the Purple Rain composer as well as several other musicians who died in late 2015 and 2016 - David Bowie, Glenn Frey, & Lemmy.  The disc went to #9 on the US Billboard charts and to #15 in the UK,  This FM broadcast captures Sting in France on November 12, 2016, 9 years ago today, performing tunes from the new disc, alongside classics from his solo career and time with The Police. The concert marked the reopening the famed La Bataclan Theater, which had been the site of a terrorist attack a year earlier that killed 90 people. Sting told the crowd in French: “We’ve got two important things to do tonight… First, to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the attacks a year ago. And then to celebrate the life and the music of this historic venue.” He added: “We shall not forget them,” before holding a moment of silence on stage.

For 30 years, Phil Lesh stood on the opposite side of the stage form Jerry Garcia, the 2 end points in the base of a triangle with Bob Weir out front. If Garcia's guitar pointed the way as the Dead segued from song to jam to song, Phil's bass was right there with him, helping lead the band unlike any other bass player had ever done, Yet if Phil's playing was often out front, he rarely took that role on stage. Yes, he occasionally took a lead vocal, but he hardly seemed like the type to lead a band. Yet, in the wake of Jerry death, that's exactly what Phil did. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, those friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. This excellent audience recording captures Phil & Friends at the Lockin' Festival on August 27, 2016, 9 years ago today.

In an interesting twist, Peter Cetera, who led Chicago's transition toward playing more power ballads in the in the late 1970s and early 1980s, chose not to attend. The band's set at their induction therefore, featured their early classics, the tunes that truly made them Hall of Famers in the first place! This TV soundboard recording captures that performance, from 8 years ago today, on April 8, 2016.

That gap of 31 years between 1987 and 2018 is the 4th longest I ever went between seeing a concert by the same band. (FYI - the 3 longest gaps were: 40 years betweem seeing Pat Benatar 1981 and 2021, 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, and 34 years between seeing John Hiatt in 1987 and then in 2021).  If you like keeping track of statitsics releated to the concerts you attened, similar to what I've just discussed, my book has a whole section filled with charts I'm sure you'll enjoy!

This FM broadcast capturs the Pretenders just 2 years before the last time I saw them, on the World Cafe program from Philadelphia om November 18, 2016, 7 years ago today.

He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. He is Tom Jones, and even after 50 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience. In early spring 1976, tickets went on sale for Elton John at Madison Square Garden, a then unheard of 7 show stand at the World's Greatest Arena which would conclude his world wide Louder Than The Concorde (But Not Quite As Pretty) Tour. Elton, while not yet a Sir, was easily the biggest rock star in the world at the time. So, it came as no surprise that my buddies and I decided our first concert experience had to be Elton at the Garden. Shut out from getting tickets through Ticketron, we opted for the local scalper, who sold us floor seats for $25. My dad gave me hell for paying three times the face value ($8.50!) to go see "some long haired rock and roller" (pretty ironic given the state of Elton's hair line). Parental disapproval aside, we made the trek from NJ to The Garden on August 15, 1976. That concert eventually inspired my self published book, Ten Rules Of The Road That I Learned At My First Concert. Since that 1976 show, I've seen Elton live 5 more times, all at MSG:
  • in October 1992 - The One tour
  • in October 1999 - a solo performance
  • n September 2005 - the 30th anniversary of Captain Fantastic
  • in March 2007 - his 60th birthday concert
  • in November 2018 - the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour
This FM broadcast captures Sir Elton in Italy on July 12, 2016, 4 decades after I first saw him live and 6 years ago this very day.
