For April, our theme will be Four-Plays (notice the clever play on words!).  On other words, we'll  bring you groups of 4 concerts which are connected by some theme.  For example, they may be 4 shows from the same city, or 4 concerts from the same venue.  We've tried to be a bit more creative than that with our Four-Plays, so as to bring you a wide variety of great shows in April!

Santana - 1973-03-30 - Columbus, GA (SBD)

1973: When Santana went on tour in early 1973, the band and their leader were both going through periods of change. The band's most recent album, Caravanserai, released in late 1973, was departure from Santana's earlier work. The album featured more of a jazz sound, as opposed to the mix of rock and salsa which highlighted prior albums. When the band finished recording the album, Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon both left the group, going off to launch Journey. In the wake of their departures, Carlos formed a new version of the band, with Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas on percussion, Doug Rauch on bass, Michael Shrieve on drums, and Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards. Santana's personal life also was in transition at this time. He married Deborah King, he daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist, Saunders King. He and Deborah became disciples of Sri Chinmoy, an Indian philosopher and spiritualist. Carlos was given the spiritual name Devadip, meaning the lamp, light and eye of God. Further changes would come later in the decade, as Santana's music would evolve to having a more AOR sound. Through all the change, however, one thing remained constant, Santana's ability to light up a concert arena. This soundboard recording captures him in Columbus on March 30, 1973, 44 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1970-03-28 - Santa Monica CA (HQ Aud)

1970: Neil Young spent the last half of 1969 and the first month of 1970 on tour in the US and Europe with CSNY. After a single solo acoustic show on February 19, Neil gathered up his original backing band, Crazy Horse, and immediately hit the road again! The tour took him to many of the classic venues of the time, such as the Fillmore East, The Electric Factory and The Boston Tea Party. This high quality audience recording captures Neil on the last night of the tour, in Santa Monica on March 28, 1970, 47 years ago today.

Robert Hunter - 1978-03-27 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

1978: Jerry Garcia  and Bob Weir weren't the only members of the Grateful Dead who was on tour in March 1978.  Robert Hunter, the band's long time lyricist was was included in their Rick & Roll Hall of Fame Induction, also performed a series of shows that month, backed by his band Comfort.  On some nights, such as the March 17 show I saw at the Capitol, he was leading in for Jerry Garcia. On other nights, such as this March 27 show in San Francisco, captured in  this soundboard recording, he and Comfort were out of their own.  This 1978 shows by the way, reflects a  are a unique period for Hunter, as he only worked with Comfort for about a year, from May 1977 to May 1978.

Grateful Dead - 1973-03-26 - Baltimore, MD (SBD)

1973: What makes the Grateful Dead's incredible performance in 1973 even more remarkable is that the band was recovering from significant personnel losses. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band in late 1971, and would not return until 1974. In early 1973, original keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" Mckernan passed away at age 27, the first of the band's keyboard players to die tragically. The Dead's sound began a new evolution, with Bill Kreuztman handling the drums solo, while Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux added new musical elements to the mix. Keith's piano playing was more jazzy compared to Pigpen's bluesy sound, while Donna Jean helped fill out the band's harmonies. New tunes such as Weather Report Suite, Jimmy Row, Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World, Loose Lucy and Wave That Flag (an early version of U.S. Blues) entered the band's repertoire. This soundboard . our third this month from the 1973 winter/spring tour, captures the band on March 26, 1973, 44 years today, from Baltimore. Bob Weir - 1978-03-25 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

1978: 1978:  The winter of 1978, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead were both on the road, performing solo shows in support of their latest solo albums.  Weir released Heaven Help The Foll in January 1978, a disc he recorded during the summer of 1977 when the Dead were on a hiatus from touring due to an injury to drummer Mickey Hart.  Weir used a host of guest musicians on the disc, some of whom were highly unexpected, such as Nigel Olsen and Dee Murray from the Elton John Band, David Paich and Mike Porcaro from Toto, and Waddy Watchel, who played for everyone from Linda Ronstadt to James Taylor to Warren Zezon to Stevie Nicks. Even more interesting, when Weir hit the road in support of the disc, not one of the session musicians for the album were in his touring band. That backing ensemble did include, however, one Brett Mydland, who a year later would replace Keith Godchaux as the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead. This soundboard recording captures Weir in San Francisco on March 25, 1978, 39 years ago today.

Stephen Stills - 1979-03-23 - Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

1979: On July 7, 1979, I saw Stephen Stills solo for the only time (I've seen him 6 times with CSN &amp once with CSNY), at the Garden State Arts Center (now the PNC Bank Arts Center thanks to the wonderful world of corporate sponsorship) I was 20 years old, in the summer between my sophomore and junior years in college. For all of us, summer was about 3 things - girls, beer and concerts. Especially beer and concerts since the drinking age was 18 back then! The Stills show marked the start of a run of 4 concerts in 3 weeks, as the next day we headed off to Belmont Race Track to see Blondie and Rockpile. Then, the next 2 Saturdays, July 14 and July 21, we saw Jorma Kaukonen in Asbury Park and the Allman Brothers at Madison Square Garden. This FM broadcast captures Stills a bit earlier in that 1979 tour, at teh Capitol Theater in Passaic on March 23, 1979, 38 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1973-03-22 - San Francisco, CA (Ex Aud)

1973:  While the album Harvest, released in February 1972, was a massive success for Neil Young. the following months proved to be trying times for him. On a personal level, his first child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. On the musical front, he had to fire Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten because of drug us. Tragically, just a few days later, Whitten died of an overdose.  Young described the situation to Cameron Crowe who was then writing for Rolling Stone magazine:: “we were rehearsing with him and he just couldn't cut it. He couldn't remember anything. He was too out of it. Too far gone. I had to tell him to go back to L.A. 'It's not happening, man. You're not together enough.' He just said, 'I've got nowhere else to go, man. How am I gonna tell my friends?' And he split. That night the coroner called me from L.A. and told me he'd OD'd. That blew my mind. I loved Danny. I felt responsible. And from there, I had to go right out on this huge tour of huge arenas. I was very nervous and ... insecure."  Burdened by heartache, Neil struggled throughout the tour, especially with is voice and with the band's performance, especially drummer Kenny Buttrey, who he eventually replaced. This excellent audience recording captures Neil during that very difficult time, with a liitel help from David Crosby & Graham Nash,  in San Francisco on March 22, 1973, 44 years ago today.

1973: While the Grateful Dead will always be known as a 1960s hippie, psychedelic band, the truth is that musically they reached their peak in the 1970s. Ironically, that’s also the decade where they took about 18 months off from touring and recording between their “farewell“ shows at Winterland in October 1974 and their return to live performances in June 1976. Many, including me, think that their 1977 Spring tour, about a year after their return from their hiatus marked the band’s finest moment. Others say that the year and half prior to their retirement, from Spring 1973 to Fall 1974, was the band’s high point. Since we brought you some 1977 music earlier this month, we'll give some equal time over the next few days to 1973!  Today, we’ll feature a soundboard from March 21, 1973, 44 years today, from Utica.  Download this one, then come back on the 24th, 26th and 31st for 3 more from this run. By the way - as has become tradition here at So Many Roads, we try to bring you runs of shows that coincide with official releases as usually that means the band is playing quite well at that time. Steely Dan - 1974-03-20 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

1974: In March 1974, Steely Dan released their 3rd studio album, Pretzel Logic, a commercial success which reached #8 on the Billboard charts. The album also received critical acclaim, appearing near the top of several end-of-year polls. The disc finished first in NME Album of The Year vote, and took the number two spot on end of year lists from Robert Christgau and the Village Voice. The album's opening song, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", became the band's biggest hit, reaching #4 on the charts soon after the release of the album. Steely Dan launched a tour in support of the album, the last live shows the band would do for almost 2 decades! This FM recording captures Steely Dan live on March 20, 1974, 43 years ago today, in Los Angeles.. You'll want this one just to hear how Steely Dan sounded in concert before their 20 year hiatus from performing live.

1977: As promised yesterday, here’s night 3 from Winterland on March 20, 1977, 4 decades ago years ago. This soundboard features a rare encore of Terrapin Station, which in a sense brought the 5 California shows that began 1977 full circle, as the Dead had opened the year in on February 26 with that exact tune! One other note - the next time the Dead would play Terrapin as an encore would be at Englishtown on 09/03/1977, my very first Grateful Dead show! 

 

Requests For Reposts - A Reminder

Over the years, I've done by best to re-post dead links when asked. However, once again, in recent weeks, it has simply gotten out of hand. I have several folks asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, or leaving 5 or 6  comments in a row, all requesting re-posts. 

While I appreciate folks wanting the music, I simply do not have the time to deal with that volume of requests. If I tried to, I'd never have a chance to post anything new. let alone manage my job, family, etc. 

So, if there's a show you would like me to re-post, I'll do my best to get to it. But if you are simply asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. As such, if I get those type of requests,I'll just be deleting them all.

 I know that may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything.

Grateful Dead - 1977-03-18 -  San Francisco CA (SBD)

1977:  Regular readers of this blog are sure to know 2 things – I’m a Deadhead and I believe 1977 was the band’s finest year. The amazing journey known as 1977 started with concerts on February 26 in San Bernadino and February 27 in Santa Barbara. At those shows, the Dead debuted Estimated Prophet and Terrapin Station from their soon to be released new album. After a 2 week break, the Dead then took up residence for 3 nights at one of their favorite venues, Winterland in San Francisco, in mid-March. This soundboard recording captures the first of those 3 shows, on March 18, 1977,  4 decades ago this very day. This show features the debut of Fire on The Mountain, in what would soon become its traditional position, following Scarlet Begonias. The Scarlet > Fire combo became ubiquitous in the band’s set lists over the next 18 years, but on this night it was brand new and the future jamming possibilities seemed infinite. Download this one to hear the Dead at the start of one of the great runs of their long strange trip, then come back tomorrow and the next day for the next 2 nights of this run.

Led Zeppelin - 1973-03-16 - Vienna, Austria (SBD)

1973: On March 2, 1973, Led Zeppelin launched a brief, 22 show tour of Europe in advance of the release of the 5th studio album, Houses of The Holy.  The set list for the tour included several tunes from that upcoming disc, including Over The Hills And Far Away, Dancing Days and The Rain Song. Violence at several of the shows forced the cancellation of two dates. This soundboard recording captures Led Zep near the middle of the tour, at their only show in Austria, on March 16, 1973, 44 years ago today.

1978: When the Beach Boys took the stage in Australia on March 15, 1978, 39 years ago today, as captured in the soundboard recording, they were a band in complete disarray.  Brothers Carl Dennis and Brian Wilson were all in the process of getting divorced from their wives. Brian's addictions were once again in control him, causing him to no show performances and behave erratically. Carl and Dennis would often be drunk on stage, barely able to play.  Moreover, all there Wilson Brothers were shooting heroin throughout this tour of Australia. In fact, the group was so incoherent during their time in the land down under that they actually has to hold a press conference to apologize for their performances, or lack there of!

Creedence Clearwater Revival - 1970-03-14 - Fillmore  East, NY (SBD)

1970: In early 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival was riding an immense wave of commercial and critical success. Between January and April, the band released the hit singles Travelin' Band, Who'll Stop The Rain, Up Around The Bend and Run Through The Jungle. In February, they appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. In June, they would go into the studio to record what many have called their best album, Cosmo's Factory, which went straight to number 1 on the Billboard charts when released in July. Who would have guessed then, that by year end, Tom Fogerty would leave Creedence, the first in a series of internal dissensions that would eventually lead to the band's demise in 1972. This soundboard recording  the legendary Fillmore East in New York,  from March 14, 1970, 47 years ago today, captures the band, therefore, at a its peak, before dissension of the band members and tension with their record company would bring it all crashing down.

Allman Brothers Band - 1976-03-13 - Uniondale, NY (FM)

1976:  As mentioned in our previous post today, Southern Rock was at its peak in the mid 1970s. In fact the genre was so big, that a double bill of Southern rockers could sell our the 20,000 seat Nassau Coliseum in New York  The Marshall Tucker Band led in for The Allman Brothers ion March 13, 1976, 41 years ago today, and both sets were broadcast live on WNEW-FM. Incredibly, Southern rock would plummet almost as it quickly as it rose to prominence. By the end of 1976, the Allmans would split apart  due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. Despite a successful reunion in 1979, highlighted by the release of the album Enlightened Rougues, the Allmans were still a band in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues as Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years until a resurgence in the 1990s!

Marshall Tucker Band - 1976-03-13 - Uniondale, NY (FM)

1976: One of the many genres of rock music that emerged during the 1970s was Southern Rock. While the Allman Brothers were the clear leaders in the rise of Southern Rock, other artists such as Charlie Daniels, The Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB) also thrived during the 1970s. The MTB released 8 albums in the 1970's, and all but one made the top 40 on the Billboard charts. They released their highest charting album, Searching For A Rainbow, in August 1975. The disc went to #15, and included the single Fire On The Mountain, which climbed to #38 on the charts. Only the single Heard It In A Love Song, which went to #14 in 1977, would perform better than Fire On The Mountain. The band's concert on March 13, 1976, 41 years ago today, featured tunes from Searching For A Rainbow as well as their soon to be released disc, Long Hard Ride. Download this FM broadcast to hear the MTB at the height a their success, a time that coincided with when Southern Rock was at the peak of its popularity. Led Zeppelin - 1975-03-11 - Long Beach, CA (SBD)

1975: Believe it of not, when Led Zeppelin launched its 1975 North American concert tour on January 18th of that year, it marked the 10th time the band had toured on that continent! It was the first time they had played live in over 18 months, and the fact they were rusty was evident in some of the early shows on the tour. The band also was in the process of incorporating new material into their set list from their soon to be released Physical Graffitti album. Five songs from the album, Sick Again, In My Time of Dying, Kashmir, Trampled Under Foot and The Wanton Song, all found their way into the set list at some point during the tour, though by the end of the run only the first 4 were still being played. When the double album was finally released in February, it would go on to sell 8 million copies and hit number 1 on both the US and UK charts. Physical Graffitti’s impact was so great that every previous Led Zep disc climbed back into the Billboard top 200 soon after it was released. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #70 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time while The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included the disc in its The Definitive 200: Top 200 Albums of All-Time. By the time the band reached Long Beach on March 11, 1975, 42 years ago today, all the rust was gone and the new songs were being played with the same power and precision as the band displayed on its earlier material. He dedicates the tune to all the of the tapers in the crowd, announcing "For the benefit of anyone who was making a bootleg then - the 12-string was out of tune!"

The Runaways - 1977-03-10 - Cleveland OH (FM)

1977: In the mid 1970’s, 5 young women – Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and Micki Steele (later replaced by Peggy Foster and then Jackie Fox) – formed a band and the rest as they say, is history. Punk and Heavy Metal were two emerging trends in the mid 70s, and The Runaways proved that those genres were not the exclusive domain of the boys of rock and roll. They released their first album in 1976, then headlined shows with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Van Halen. In the summer of 1977 the group arrived in Japan for a string of sold out shows. At the time, the only bands selling more albums in Japan than the Runaways were ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. They were mobbed by fans on their visit, and Joan Jett later described the mass hysteria as being like Beatlemania. This FM Broadcast captures the band a few months before their triumphant visit to Japan, on March 10, 1977, 4 decades ago this very day

Jerry Garcia Band - 1978-03-09 - Cleveland OH (SBD)

1978: In the winter of 1978, Jerry Garcia went on tour in support of the album Cats Under The Stars, which he recorded in late 1977 and released in April 1978. Unlike Bob Weir, who made some unique choices in the session musicians that helped him record Heaven Help The Fool, Garcia stayed tried and true, working with long time bass player John Kahn, keyboardist Merl Saunders, and drummer Ron Tutt, as well as Grateful Dead members Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux. Garcia also recruited vocalist Maria Muldaur, know for her 1974  hit Midnight at The Oasis, to provide backing vocals for the disc. Kahn, The Godchaux's and Muldaur were all part of the tour band as well, with Buzz Buchanan on drums being the only member of the live ensemble not to have played on the album. Mnny folks consider this 1978 tour one of the finest by the Jerry Garcia Band, with both the March 18 and March 22 shows having been officially released.  I also saw Garcia live for the first time on this tour, on March 17 at the Capitol Theater, which we will get to later this month.  Right now, we'll bring you this soundboard recording of opening night of the East Coast run, from Cleveland on March 9. 1978, 39 years ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1978-03-08 - Washington DC (SBD)

1978: Born in Chicago in 1947, Warren Zevon moved to Los Angeles when he was still a teenager. When he quit high school, he moved to New York, and later to Spain, to pursue a musical career, but by 1975, was back in LA. He roomed there with then unknowns Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. He also collaborated with Jackson Browne, who helped produce Zevon’s 1976 self titled album. Zevon also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, including Hasten Down the Wind, Carmelita, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and Mohammed's Radio. In 1978, Zevon released Excitable Boy, an album produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the charts. This FM broadcast captures Zevon right as Excitable Boy was climbing up the charts, on March 8, 1978, 39 years ago today. Since long time readers of SO Many Roads are always asking me for more of Mr. Zevon, will bring you another show tomorrow!

Led Zeppelin  - 1970-03-07 - Montreux, Switzerland (SBD + HQ AUD)

1970:  On February 23, 1970, Led Zeppelin launched a winter tour of Europe, their first shows on the continent since the release of Led since the release of Led Zeppelin II back in October 1969. That album, which featured such classics as Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, and Ramble On, just to name 3, went to number 1 in both the UK and the US.  The tour consisted of 15 shows in 8 different countries and ran until March 12.  This soundboard and audience recording captures the band in Montreux, Switzerland, on March 7, 1970, 47 years ago today.
