Grateful Dead 1978 - Back To Back -#1:  In the lore of the Grateful Dead, 1978 has always been a year that receives mixed reviews. As regular readers of this blog know, 1977 was THE YEAR for the Dead with a run of shows that may be unmatched in the band’s history. So, 1978 has always founds itself in the “tough act to follow” position. In truth, the Dead’s playing in 1978 wasn’t quite at the same level as the prior year. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. Since Dead Heads like to say that "there was never a bad show in Chicago", this Back to Back set features the Dead on the positive side of 1978.  Today we bring you a soundboard recording from January 30, 1978, 33 years ago today. Danko & Helm 1983 - Back To Back - #1: In June 1983, after a 7 year hiatus since the Last Waltz concert on November 25, 1976, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of The Band did, as Robbie Robertson decided to continue his solo ventures rather than rejoin Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. The seeds of that reunion were sown back in January of that year, when Danko and Helm launched a tour together that ran through April. He made his first 2 visits to the continent in 1962, then returned for a 3rd trip in 1963. He again visited in 1965, with The Rolling Stones as his opening act. He returned again in 1967 as part of the Big Show tour with The Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page!) and The Walker Bros. On January 26 and 27, The Big Show tour played Festival Hall in Melbourne, along with additional acts Johnny Young & Kompany, and The Mixtures. Jerry & Merl 1973 - Back to Back - #1: From December 1970 to June 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo about 6 months later, in San Francisco, on January 24, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today. Furthur - 2014-01-20 - Quintana Roo, Mexico (SBD)

Furthur 2014 - Back To Back - #1:  Furthur, named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band,  following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group  In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way.  This soundboard recording captures the band in Mexico on January 20, 2014, 7 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow, the next day and the day after that for the rest of this 4 part Back To Back set. 

Historical Notes - The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

C&N 1992 -Back to Back - #2: In early 1992, David Crosby and Graham Nash went on tour together, their first series of live shows as a duo since the 1970’s. The pairing has always seemed a curious one, yet somehow it magically works. After all, Crosby was born in Los Angeles, and emerged from The Byrds, a band steeped in folk rock, but which, thanks to Crosby, also helped influence what we today call psychedelic rock. Nash was born in Blackpool, England, and was pivotal in the forging the pop sound of the Hollies. Despite their differences, Crosby and Nash understood the musical power of perfectly blended harmonies, as evident on such tunes as Wind on The Water/To The Last Whale. The also shared a common belief that music could make a difference in politics and world events. Songs such as Long Time Gone, Chicago, Military Madness, Almost Cut My Hair and Immigration Man reflected the duo’s sense of political activism. Beatles 1964 - Back To Back - #1: Less than a month before their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that officially brought Beatlemania to America, the Beatles were "across the pond' in Paris, lauching an 18 day run at the Olympia Theatre,  They would perform twice, and sometimes 3 times, each day, topping a 9 act bill that included French singer Sylvie Vartan or America's Trini Lopez.  The set list featured From Me To You, Roll Over Beethoven, She Loves You, This Boy, Boys, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally, although for some shows, particularly the matinée performances, they played fewer tunes,.  The Olympia, a classic old world theater, was not quite equipped for modern rock & roil, with the band's amps often overloading and blowing out fuses!  This soundboard recording captures the day show from Janaury 16, 1964, 57 years ago today.  Stop back later today for the evening performance. .

Led Zep 1973 - Back to Back  #2: Here's part 2 of our Led Zed Same Tour, Different Show entry from 1973, a soundboard from January 15, 1973, 48 years ago today, in Stoke, England. This show took place just 2 months prior to the release of the album Houses of The Holy, which would go to number 1 in both the US and the UK. Almost every one of the 8 tracks on that disc became staples in Zeppelin’s live sets over the years to come. This show includes 2 tracks from Houses of The Holy – The Song Remains The Same and The Rain Song. Soon after these shows in England, the band would embark on a record-breaking tour of North America, that included the filming of the concert movie, The Song Remains The Same, at Madison Square Garden in NY.

Led Zeppelin - 1973-01-14 - Liverpool, UK (SBD)

Led Zep 1973 - Back To Back - #1: On November 30, 1972, Led Zeppelin launched a 25 date tour of the UK, which ran until January 30, 1973, their first shows in their home country in just about a year. The original 110,000 tickets, priced a £1, sold out within four hours of the box offices opening on November 10. This run of shows holds an interesting place in Led Zeppelin's history for several reasons. First, it was the last full fledged tour of the UK by the band. The only subsequent shows that they would play in England prior to John Bonham’s death in 1980 would be 5 nights at Earl’s Court in 1975 and 2 performances at Knebworth on 1979. Second, the tour would also be the last time that the band played small venues, such as the 800 seat Aberystwyth Kings Hall. The arena/stadium era would commence for Led Zep right after these shows. Finally, this tour was supposed to have produced the first Led Zep live album, however, the band eventually decided to use the Madison Square Garden performances later that year for the disc The Song Remains The Same. This soundboard recording from January 14, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today, captures Led Zep on the 2nd night of the tour in Liverpool, home of the Beatles! TTB 2018 - Back To Back - #1: Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. EC & MK 1987 - Back to Back- #2: Welcome to post #2 in our Back to Back to Back set featuring Eric Clapton during his first run of shows at the Royal Albert Hall, a soundboard recording from january 11, 1987, 34 years ago today!. These shows were the warm up for his 1987 world tour which featured EC playing songs from August, which had been released in November 1986. The album, produced by Phil Collins, became EC's best selling disc, yielding 3 Billboard top 10 singles, Miss You at #9, Tearing Us Apart at #5 and It's In The Way That You Use It, which reached #1 thanks to being part of the sound track to the Tom Cruise movie, The Color of Money. EC & MK 1987 - Back to Back- #1: Opened in March 1871, The Royal Albert Hall was built to fulfill the vision of Prince Albert of a 'Central Hall' that would be used to promote understanding and appreciation of the Arts and Sciences. Standing at at the heart of the South Kensington estate, the RAH would be surrounded by museums and other places of learning. Estimates are that the venue has hosted over 150,000 different events, from classical concerts to plays to operas to movie premiers. In the rock era, Eric Clapton has been tied to the RAH throughout his storied career. Cream played their farewell gigs at the hall in 1968, as well as their initial reunion shows in 2005. In 1987, Clapton played a series of shows at the RAH to open a year, a tradition which would continue for another 9 years until 1996. This soundboard recording captures EC on January 10, 1987, 34 years ago today, backed by his then new band of Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Steve Ferrone on drums.
