Squeeze - 1988-07-31 - The Ritz, NY (SBD) 

In 1985, 3 years after disbanding, the 5 members of Squeeze who recorded Argy Bargy in 1980 - Difford, Tilbrook, Holland, Lavis, and Bentley - reformed for a charity gig in the UK. The concert was such a success that the band unanimously agreed to resume recording and touring as Squeeze. Searching for a different sound, however, the band replaced Bentley with bassist Keith Wilkinson. This new line-up released the 1985 album Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, and then, having also added keyboardist, Andy Metcalfe, the 1987 disc, Babylon and On. Incredibly, that 1987 album produced the band’s only 2 Billboard top 40 hits in the US, Hourglass at #15 and 853-5937. This soundboard recording captures Squeeze on July 31, 1988, 31 years ago today, at the Ritz in NY on tour in support of Babylon and On. Download this one to remember why Difford and Tillbrook are considered one of the best songwriting duos of the 1980s.

In early, 1974 Van Morrison released the classic live album It's Too Late Too Stop Now which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. He was also testing out material he had written during a 3 week vacation in Belfast back in October 1973, songs which would eventually comprise the album Veedon Fleece, released later in 1974. So this show from July 29, 1974, 45 years ago today, finds Van in a period of flux, something he too must have realized, as his 1977 album follow up to Veedion Fleece would be entitled A Period of Transition!

Jim Croce - 1973-07-29 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (SBD)

On July 21, 1973, Jim Croce’s biggest hit, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts. When asked what had inspired him to write the song, Croce explained it was based on a guy he had met in the army. He was a tough guy who never had anyone tell him what to do. Croce’s army buddy went AWOL, but incredibly came back at the end of the month to try to collect his pay check. The military police put him in handcuffs and locked him up, putting an end to another tough guy, much the way Bad Bad Leroy Brown gets his comeuppance in the song. This FM broadcast captures Croce in Amsterdam on July 29, 1973, 46 years ago today and just about the time Bad Bad Leroy Brown had topped the charts. Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1989-07-28 - St Paul, MN (Ex Aud)

In early 1989, Stevie Ray Vaughan released the album In Step, his 4th studio effort and his firts since entering rehab to end his dependence on drugs and alcohol,  is the fourth studio album by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble released in 1989. It would laos be the last disc he recorded with his long time backing band, Double Trouble. Critics loved the album, proclaiming it was the best of SRV's career. Legendary critic Robert Christgau, for example gave it an A- rating, while Neil Perry, a writer for Sounds magazine, wrote that the disc "proves just why Vaughan is to the guitar what Nureyev is to ballet."  This excellent audience recording captures SRV oun tour in support of In Step on July 28, 1989, 30 years ago today.  Sadly, just over a year later, SRV, the man Eric Clapton once called the best guitarist in the world died in a helicopter crash after a concert. Rock lost another guitar hero way before his time.

In June 1986, Lou Reed released Mistrial on RCA Records, his fourteenth solo album. The album went to #47 on the Billboard chart in the US, and reached #69 on the UK charts. The disc featured the single No Money Down, which, as was typical at the time, was accompanied by a music video. That video featured an animatronic Lou Reed, which you can see for yourself here. No sure that makes you want your MTv.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Lou on tour in support of  Mistrial This one in Philadelphia on July 27, 1986, 33 years ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1978-07-27 - Sausalito CA (SBD)

In 1978, Warren Zevon became an “overnight success”, when he released the album Excitable Boy, which in addition to the title track, featured Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Johnny Strikes Up The Band and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself.  This soundboard recording captures Zevon playing tunes from Excitable Boy  at the legendary Record Plant in Sausalito, on July 27, 1978, 41 years ago today.

Roger Waters - 1984-07-26 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

In 1984, Roger Waters, while in the midst of a power struggle with David Gilmour over the creative direction of Pink Floyd, launched his solo career. It did not get off to a good start to say the least. He released his first solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking on April 30, 1984. The album dealt with the benefits and downsides of monogamy and family life vs. in Water’s words, pursuing the call of the wild. Despite guest appearances by Eric Clapton and David Sanborn, the album flopped. Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder described the disc as a "strangely static, faintly hideous record." Rogers launched a short European Tour in June 1984 in support of the album, then came to North America for about a dozen concerts. Eric Clapton joined Waters for all those 1984 shows. The set list was divided into 2 parts, with the first half consisting of Pink Floyd songs and the second half featuring the The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album played in its entirety. This soundboard recording features Waters on July 26, 1984, 35 years ago today, in Chicago. Download this one and decide for yourself “the pros and cons” of Water’s first solo endeavor.

After not having much critical or commercial success in 1973 and 1974, James Taylor bounced back in 1975 and 1976. His 1975 album, Gorilla, went to #6 on the Billboard charts, and was well received by critics. His follow up album in 1976, In The Pocket, while not quite as successful, still went to #16 on the charts. His Greatest Hits album was also released in 1976, and eventually sold over 11 million copies. JT also released 3 of his most enduring singles during those 2 years, How Sweet It Is, Mexico and Shower The People. All 3 made the top 50 on the billboard charts, with How Sweet It is climbing to #5. It also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, as did Shower The People. This FM broadcast captures JT on tour in 1976, on July 25, 1976, 43 years ago today in Pittsburgh. Now, if the 1970's were the pinnacle of Elton John's commercial and artistic success, then the 1980's were the low point. While he still had several successful singles in that decade, such as I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, Sad Songs and I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That (all which made the Billboard Top 5, though none climbed all the way to number 1), not one of his albums could crack the top 10. His 1982 disc, Jump Up, perfectly symbolized the decade. On the one hand, two singles from the album, Blue Eyes, and Empty Garden (his tribute to the late John Lennon), both cracked the top 15 on the charts. On the other hand, lyricist Bernie Taupin called Jump Up "one of our worst albums," adding "its a terrible, awful, disposable album, but it had Empty Garden on it, so it's worth it for that one song." While Elton's studio work was a bit hit or miss, he could still put on a good as live show as anyone in the business. He toured extensively in support of Jump Up, playing 115 concerts in 1982 in Australia, Europe and North America. In the late 1970s, Bob Dylan, originally born Robert Zimmerman, son of Jewish parents Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice Stone, became a born again Christian. His music became more gospel infused, as evident on his 1979 and 1980 albums, Slow Train Coming and Saved. hen touring from the fall of 1979 through the spring of 1980, Dylan would not play any of his older, secular works, and he delivered declarations of his faith from the stage. By 1981, however, Dylan had brought back many of his classics into the set list, though with alternate phrasing and an evangelical fervor. His new take on old standards is evident in this soundboard recording from the last night on his European Tour on July 25, 1981, 38 years ago today, in France. The show was marred by 2 major tragedies, during which Dylan clearly embraces the old expression “the show must go on.” About midway through the show, an audience member fell into the power grid and was electrocuted. As a result, the arena lost all power, so Dylan and the band improvised acoustic songs on stage until it was restored. Unfortunately, the darkness caused another death, as a young girl lost her bearings and fell from a retaining wall. Perhaps drawing on his new faith in the face of these tragic events, Dylan is powerful and focused, delivering what the site Bob’s Boots considers one of the must have performances of the 1980s. In May 1973, Van Morrison launched a 3 month tour of the US and Europe, accompanied by with his legendary backing band, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Music historians often label these shows as among the finest of his long storied career. Even the fickle Morrison seems to agree, having said at the time that “I am getting more into performing. It's incredible. When I played Carnegie Hall in the fall something just happened. All of a sudden I felt like 'you're back into performing' and it just happened like that...A lot of times in the past I've done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it's been clicking a lot.” The concert performances were described by writer Erik Hage as "sequences of a young soul lion whipping the crowd into a frenzy and then stopping on a dime—teasing out anticipation, rushing, receding, and coaxing every drop out of his band." The tour produced the album It’s Too Late To Stop Now, which critics have hailed as one of the finest live discs ever recorded. Of course, on the heels of that success, in typical Van fashion, he abruptly went in a different direction, disbanding the Caledonia Soul Orchestra just 3 months after the tour ended. Bruce Springsteen - 1971-07-23 - Lincoln Center, NY (SBD)

Today, as he triumphantly takes his Wrecking Ball tour around the world, Bruce Springsteen remains one of rock’s biggest stars, a hall of famer who still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Back in 1971, however, Springsteen was a nobody. When he played as part of the Guggenheim Memorial Concert Series in Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center on July 23, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, the headline act was The Richard Goldman Band, a classical orchestra noted for its creative use of wind and brass instruments. Springsteen was one of several unnamed under card acts, each limited to a one hour performing slot. The fact that Bruce’s mid-1971 lineup included horns may have been the reason he got this particular booking. Although this was an outdoor event, Bruce and the band performed inside the Guggenheim Band Shell. The superb acoustics of that shell, a well preserved tape source, and a highly disciplined and inspired performance by Bruce and the band all combine to deliver an extraordinary soundboard recording. In July 1987, 10,000 Maniacs released their 2nd album, In My Tribe, which was more pop oriented than than previous work. The disc proved to be their big breakthrough, staying on the Billboard charts for 77 weeks and peaking at No. 37. The album included tracks such as Like The Weather, What's The Matter Here, Hey Jack Kerouac, and a cover of Cat Steven's Peace Train, all of which received extensive play on FM radio and MTv. The album would be certified double platinum early the following year, This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of In My Tribe on July 22, 1988, 31 years go today.

Earlier this month, we had a recent concert from Tanglewood, featuring James Taylor backed by the Boston Pops. Today, we go back to just the 2nd year rock concerts were ever performed at that historic venue for a show from Chicago, on July 21, 1970, 49 years ago today. Bill Graham, who brought rock to Tnaglewood, originally ran into an issue with this July 21 show. Joe Cocker, who was scheduled to headline, had to cancel due to health issues. Graham attempted to get Jimi Hendrix to fill the spot but those negotiations fell through. He finally booked Chicago to headline the show. The band had scored 2 recent top 10 singles, Make Me Smile, which reached #9 and 25 or 6 To 4 which hit #4. Still, Graham was concerned if Chicago had the horsepower to stand in for Cocker and Hendrix. The band erased any doubts with a monster show that left the audience begging for more.  In fact, the crowd only headed for home after guitarist Terry Kath came out on stage to explain that they simply couldn’t play anymore due to local curfew laws. Allman Brothers Band - 1979-07-19 - Columbia, MD (FM)

I saw the Allman Brothers for the first time on July 21, 1979, at Madison Square Garden in New York, the 3rd straight Saturday that month that I had been at a concert. The other 2 were Stephen Stills on July 7 and Jorma on July 14, with Blondie and Rockpile thrown in on Sunday, July 8 just for good measure. Such was life at the age of 20. Unfortunately, I didn't pick the best of years to see the Allmans. The group had just recently reformed, after splitting apart in 1976 due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. While their recent album, Enlightened Rougues, released in February, was well received, with some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love, the band was still in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years. Despite their troubles, the Allmans could still put on a great live show, and didn't disappoint that night in Madison Square Garden. While I never have been able to find a tape of that show, I do have this FM broadcast from 2 nights earlier, on July 19, 1979, 4 decades ago today. Marshall Crenshaw - 1983-07-18 - Hartford CT (FM)

In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Crenshaw on WBCN-FM, while attending college up in Massachusetts. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Little wonder since esteemed rock critic Robert Christgau rated the album an A, while Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars. Crensahw releasaed hi 2nd disc, Field Day in  June 1983 and Christgau gave the follow up a rating of A+! That 2nd album contains my faviorite Crensahw tune Whenever You're On My Mind! Why Marshall Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. Those first 2 album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, and Beatles and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). This FM broadcast captures Crenshaw on tour in Hartford in support of his 2nd album on July 18, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1980-07-18 - San Francisco, CA (Ex Aud)

The year 1980 was marked by one memorable moment after another for Jerry Garcia, both with the Grateful dead and while out on his own.  The Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary in 1980, and rose to the occasion by delivering countless memorable performances - a spring East Coast tour that spawned the official release of 4 shows, 3 shows in Alaska, September run that saw the release of the 9/2, 9/3 and 9/4 shows plus a concert on 9/6 in Maine that just might have been the concert of the year, and finally the run of shows at the Warfield Theatre, Saenger Center and Radio City Music Hall that featured an acoustic set and 2 electric sets each night.  The Jerry Garcia Band also had its share of highlights in 1980, especially the February/March tour that saw the release of the February 28 and March 1 shows. This excellent audience recording captures the JGB a little later in the year, on the band'ss home turf in San Francisco on July 18, 1980, 39 years ago today. While it may not be quite as hot as the Winter shows  the performance still finds Jerry in fine form.

Thirty eight years ago, sometime in July 1981, (the exact date is unknown), right before the release of the live album Songs From The Attic, Billy Joel dropped in on Sparks, a nightclub in his native Long Island. According to some sources, Sparks was owned by Billy’s soundman, Brian Ruggles. Though capable of selling out 20,000 set arenas, such as the 5 sold out shows he played at Madison Square Garden in June 1980, Joel seemed to be very comfortable returning to the club scene, even if for one night. He continually banters with the audience, including imitations of Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Cocker. He also has fun singing and playing bits and pieces of songs by other artists, such as Arc of a Diver, Long Distance Runaround, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Ruby Tuesday and I've Got You Under My Skin. This soundboard recording captures the entire show, with the exception of Captain Jack, which has been officially released on the My Lives box set. Happy Together Tour - 1985-07-16 - New York, NY (FM)

While critical attention in 1967 was focused on the psychedelic sounds of albums such as Sgt Pepper's and Surrealistic Pillow, the singles chart was still filled with breezy pop tunes and one hit wonders. Songs such as Windy by The Association, Incense & Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, to Sir With Love by Lulu and Ode to Billy Joe all went to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1967. The Turtles has their only #1 hit as well that year, when Happy Together reached the top spot, knocking out Penny Lane in the process! The Turtles broke up in 1970, though the band co leaders,Howard Kaylan and Mark Volma, found a 2nd career as a musical comedy act known as Flo & Eddie. In 1985, the duo put The Turtles back together to headline an oldies tour, appropriately named The Happy Together Tour, after their best known tune! Also on the bill were Tommy James & The Shondells, The Buckinghams, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, and The Grassroots. This FM broadcast captures the Happy Together Tour on the Pier in New York, on July 16, 1985, 34 years ago today.

Elvis Presley - 1970-07-15 - Culver City, CA (SBD)

As Elvis Presley geared up for his August 1970 engagement at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker looked for ways to generate even more dollars from that run. His initial concept was a closed circuit broadcast of one of the Vegas shows, but eventually that idea transformed into filming a documentary. Released on November 11, 1970, the movie Elvis: That's the Way It Is, captured the King on stage during 6 concerts in Las Vegas from August 10 to August 13. Additional footage was shot at his performance in Phoenix on September 9, as well as during a host of rehearsals in July leading up to his run in Las Vegas. This soundboard recording captures one of those rehearsals in its entirety, on July 15, 1970, 49 years ago today, in Culver City, CA. Elvis runs through 27 songs during the rehearsal, including 2 Beatles classics, Hey Jude and Yesterday!

Dave Mason - 1978-07-14 - New York, NY (FM)

After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. His best charting single during that period was Only You Know and I Know, which hit Number 42 on the Billboard charts in 1970. His biggest success, however, would come in 1977, with the release of the album Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. This FM broadcast captures Mason on tour in support of Let i Flow, at the Dr. Pepper Music Festival in Central Park in New York on July 14, 1978, 41 years ago today. A historical note - The Schaefer Music Festival ran summers from 1968 to 1976 at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park. The festival had originated in 1966 and was sponsored that year and the following one by Rheingold. Dr. Pepper took over sponsorship in 1977. In 1981, the festival moved to Pier 84, next to where the Intrepid is docked. Miller took over sponsorship in 1983 until the series ended in 1988. During that 20 year span, some of the biggest names in rock played the summer series, including Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Band, Van Morrison, The Eagles, and CSN, just to name a few. In the early days, ticket prices ranged from $1 to $3, making it one of the best bargains in rock.

In 1985, The Grateful Dead celebrated 20 years together, dating back to their early days as the Warlocks. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. The band most certainly did make efforts to shake up their set lists in 1985, as can be seen in this soundboard recording from July 13, 1985, 34 years ago today. The show opened with One More Saturday Night, normally reserved for the encore position, and featured a Fire On The Mountain sans its normal partner, Scarlet Begonias. The show also featured Comes a Time and Cryptical Envelopment, tunes that made their way back into the set list in 1985 after long absences.
