Don Henley Live - Re-Post Folder

Well, after bringing you an Eagles re-post folder a few days ago, it only makes sense that our next edition in continuing series of re-post would be a folder of live shows from Don Henley!

Grab them while you can as due to space limitations this folder can't stay up forever. That said, please don't hammer the folder as that will set off alarm bells and may get it taken down by Mega. Grab a few shows each day, the come back for more the following day.

Enjoy the tunz!

PS: The re-post folders for The Eagles, The Rascals, The Doors, Paul McCartney 2020s, Paul McCartney 1980s & 1990s, and SNL are still up.  Just go here, scroll down to find the re-post folder you're looking for, and a new link will be available on that post.  And then go here to discover a host of other prior re-posts and how to find them!

I saw Don Henley live once, in August 1985 at Pier 84 in New York, with Katrina & The Waves leading in. Henley was on tour in support of the album Building The Perfect Beast, which spawned the top 5 single, The Boys Of Summer. That video for that tune won 4 awards at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video Of The Year.

This FM Broadcast captures Henley about a year after I saw him, in Long Beach on August 28, 1986, 4 decades ago this very day.  He was headling a benefit called Get Tough On Toxics, which almost turned into an Eagles reunion.  Glen Frey was also supposed to be on the bill, but had to cancel due to a serious illness. He did appear via video right before Best Of My Love.

Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.

1990 - While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. Don Henley jumped on the Unplugged bandwagon before Macca and Slowhand made it fashionable, appearing on March 30, 1900, 33 years ago today, Henley played both Eagles and solo material on Unplugged, as captured in this FM broadcast.

As we focus on artists this month who have helped fight hunger, you'll begin to notice that many of those musicians often support a host of charitable causes, following the blue print laid down in the 1960s of trying to use the power of rock & roll to make this a better world.  Don Henley has supported the End Hunger Network, participated in the 1987 Hungerthon Concert, and supported Why Hunger's Summer Meals for Kids program,  In addition, as we learned last month, he played Farm Aid in 1985 and 1990. Moreover, this soundboard recording captures him at the Bridge School Benefit on November 2, 1991, a quarter century ago this very day.

Bridge School Benefit - 1986-10-13 - Mountain View, CA (HQ Aud)

The 1980s saw a resurgence of rock concerts seeking to raise money for social causes. Live Aid and Farm Aid bought attention to the plight of the hungry worldwide and the family farmer in the US, In 1986, Neil Young launched the Bridge School benefit concerts, a now annual event that raises funds to “ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications and through the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative life-long educational strategies.” Neil performs each year, and has used his connections to draw the biggest names in rock to participate, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, CSN, Jerry Garcia, Tom Petty, Buffalo Springfield, Elton John,  Don Henley, Willie Nelson, The Who, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. and so forth. My apologies if I missed your favorite in my list - it could take days to list every rock legend who has helped Neil wit this worthy cause. Go here if you want a complete list! In a month dedicated to this worthy event, it's only fitting that we can bring you a high quality audience recording of the very first Bridge School show, from October 13, 1986, 3 decades years ago today.

The Concert For Walden Woods - 1993-09-06 - Foxboro, MA (FM)

On September 6, 1993, 22 years ago today, a host of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers joined together for a benefit concert to preserve Walden Woods, was the site of Henry David Thoreau's two-year study of philosophy and natural systems chronicled in his book, Walden. Organized by Don Henley (who was inducted with the The Eagles), the list of performers also included Hall of Famer’s Elton John, Sting, and Aerosmith. Melissa Ethridge and Jimmy Buffett also appeared at the show, and while not yet in the Hall of Fame, maybe one day both will be! In any event, this FM broadcast brings you the Walden concert in its entirety!

OFFICIALLY RELEASED - LINK REMOVED

When local radio stations announced that Billy Joel would play the last concert ever at Shea Stadium - the officially proclaimed LAST PLAY AT SHEA - on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, my sister quickly called, amazingly got through, and came up with 4 seats for herself, her husband, my wife and me. Our celebration at being at such an historic event, however, was short lived. The show sold out so fast that they announced a 2nd one -- for Friday July, 18, 2 days after the first show!!  To say the least, it was quite unfair to those of us who plunked down top dollar for what we were led to believe was the last show at Shea. And it would only get worse when the concerts actually took place. Now don't get me wrong -- Billy Joel put on an incredible show on July 16, 2008. From the opening Star Spangled Banner (what else would you play in baseball stadium) to the closing Souvenir, Billy was as in fine form. In addition, he was joined by special guests John Mayer, Tony Bennett, Don Henley and John Mellencamp. The 4 of us had a great time, even if we did have to leave a little early to catch the last train back to NJ. But there's no doubt that the 2nd show was the one to be at. Guest stars that night included Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey and the one and only Paul McCartney. Sir Paul had played the first ever concert at Shea with The Beatles in August 1965 (that one is posted on this blog) and now 43 years later, stood on stage to close the building. Talk about coming full circle. His plane from London landed just 15 minutes before he was to hit the stage and a police escort got him to Shea in the nick of time. His Let It Be was the last song ever played at Shea.  As I'm a huge McCartney fan, I'm still bitter that I missed that historic moment because we were hoodwinked when we bought the tickets. Well, at least I may be able to get to enjoy that final show on film, as it appears a concert movie is about to be released (go here for more info on that). No bootlegs are available of the July 18 concert, but I do have this audience recording of the July 16 show that I attended, just 5 years ago today. The sound quality isn't the best, but it was a magical night, even if it turned out to be just the NEXT TO LAST PLAY at Shea. Download and enjoy!
