Lou Reed 1983 - Back To Back - #1: In 1980, Lou reed stopped touring for almost 3 years, spending time instead in the studio working on 2 albums, The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts.  While neither cracked the top 150 on the Billboard charts, both received rave critical reviews, with the Robert Christgau, for example, giving each an A rating. Reed finally returned to the stage in early 1983, touring in support of both discs.  As part of that tour, he played 4 dates at the legendary Bottom Line nightclub in New York in late February/early March 1983, performing 2 shows each night.  Tickets were just $12.50. This soundboard recording capturs the soundcheck and early show from the opening night of the run, on February 25, 1983, 43 years ago today.  Download this one, then comeback later today for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Lou Reed has made 3 appearances at Farm Aid - the inaugural event in 1985, then in 1987 and finally in 1990. 

This soundboard recording captures him long before those Farm Aid sets, on September 20, 1973, 52 years ago today at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A few months earlier, in July, Reed had released the concept album Berlin which tells the tale of a couple, Jim and Caroline, and their struggle with drug addiction and abuse. The album was initially a commercial and critical disaster, though over the years opinions have changed, with Rolling Stone even ranking it at #334 on its list of the greatest albums of all time.

Amnesty International Concert - 1986-06-15 - East Rutherford, NJ (FM)

In 1986, Amnesty International celebrated its 25th anniversary of fighting for human rights across the globe. To help raise awareness of the agency’s work, artists as diverse as U2, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Bryan Adams, Joan Baez and thr Neville Brothers, banded together for a series of 6 concerts in June of that year. To provide some perspective on how important these shows were to the performers involved, The Police reunited for the last 3 shows of the tour after not playing live in over 2 years, then wouldn’t tour again until 2007! This FM broadcast captures the final show at Giants Stadium show on July 15, 1986, 39 years ago today, a sold-out, all-day festival, running from noon until 11 pm. In addition to the 6 featured acts, the Giant Stadium show included such performers as Third World, Jackson Browne, Max Weinberg, Peter Paul & Mary, The Hooters, Stanley Jordan, Miles Davis, Little Steven, Howard Jones, and Joni Mitchell. The performers featured songs about politics, freedom and courage, including anthems such as Sun City, Invisible Sun, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and I Shall Be released. MTv televised the entire concert, while Westwood One handled the national radio broadcast. Of course, while the concert was a spectacular musical event, the question remained as to whether it had achieved its intended purpose. The answer appeared to be a solid yes, as about after tour concluded, US membership in Amnesty International increased by 45,000, while letters written by concert goers led to the release of 2 political prisoners of conscience.

1990s - #1: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That firs concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This FM and TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1990, held in Indianapolis on April 7, 1990, 35 years ago today. 1970s - #5: In 1978, in the midst of the punk rock revolution he helped inspire, Lou Reed released the album Street Hassle, a disc described as raw, wounded and unapologetic. Most of the early punk records could have been described in the same terms. Yet, at the time, Reed had little if any use for the punk scene. He was quoted as saying "I'm too literate to be into punk rock ... The whole CBGB's, new Max's thing that every one's into and what's going on in London—you don't seriously think I'm responsible for what's mostly rubbish?" Reed's comments show just how splintered rock and roll had become as the decade of the 1970s wound to a close. This soundbaord recording captures Lou during the Street Hassle tour on April 14, 1978, 46 years ago today, at the Park West in Chicago.

1972 - In November 1972, Lou Reed released the album Transformer, which was co-produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. Unlike his debut solo album, which was largely ignored by fans and critics, Transformer proved to be a commercial and critical success. The album reached #29 on the Billboard charts in the US and did even better in the UK, reaching the #13 position. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review, and critical acclaim for the disc has grown with the passage of time. For example, NME ranked it as the #55 album of all time and Rolling Stone rated it at #194 on its list of the 500 best albums in history. The single, Walk on The Wild Side, which became one of Reed’s signature songs, went to #16 of the charts in the US and to #10 in the UK. The song’s very clever lyrics also slipped some rather risqué references past the radio censors! This WLIR- FM broadcast from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead catches Lou Reed just over a month after the release of Transformer on December 26, 1972, a half century ago today.

Lou Reed - 1980-05-12 - Milan, Italy (SBD)

In 1967, Lou Reed was a member of the Velvet Undergroud, an early avante garde/proto punk band managed by Andy Warhol and also featurng John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker. The band began recording their debut albm in 1966, and at Warhol's suggestion added German singer Nico to the line up.  The album, approprately titled The Velet Underground and Nico was released in March 1967. No one seemed to notice or care as the disc only reached #129 on the Billbaord charts and most critics ignored it. In the ensuing years, however, the critics took a second look at the album and dramatically reassessed its place in rock history.  In 1977, famed critic Robert Christgau wrote that the record had been difficult to understand in 1967, "which is probably why people are still learning from it. It sounds intermittently crude, thin, and pretentious at first, but it never stops getting better."  In 2003, Spin Magazine selected it as the most influential rock album of all time. That same year, Rolling Stone ranked it at #12 on its list of the Greatest Albums Of All Time. The disc came in again at #12 in the magazine's 2012 update of that list, and then at #23 in the 2020 version of the rankings. In 2006, Time Magazine listed it among its 100 Greatest Albums Of Al Time. Not bad fo an album that was released to little of no fanfare. This soundboard recording captures Reed 13 years after the release of that historic album, in Italy, on June 12, 1980, 42 years ago today.

A year later, Reed released his 4th solo album, entitled Sally Can’t Ride. RCA records launched a massive publicity campaign in support of the album, which despite mediocre critical reviews, rose to #10 on the Billboard charts. It would be the highest charting album of reed’s career. Reed seemed completely uninterested, however, in the material. He was later quoted as saying “I slept through that LP - whatever they suggested I said yes.... It seems like the less I'm involved with a record, the bigger a hit it becomes. If I weren't on the record at all next time around, it might go to Number One."  This soundboard recording captures Lou on tour in between the release of those 2 very different albums, in Stockholm on May 14, 1974. 45 years ago today.

For example, NME ranked it as the #55 album of all time and Rolling Stone rated it at #194 on its list of the 500 best albums in history. The single, Walk on The Wild Side, which became one of Reed’s signature songs, went to #16 of the charts in the US and to #10 in the UK. The song’s very clever lyrics also slipped some rather risqué references past the radio censors! This concert catches Lou Reed just over 2 months after the release of transformer, at Alice Tully Hall in New York, on January 27, 1973, 46 years ago today. Alice Tully Hall is part of Lincoln Center, home of operas and ballets, and was probably not fully prepared for the likes of Lou Reed, his fans, and his music! Lou Reed - 1986-07-16 - New York, NY (FM)

In  June 1986, Lou Reed released Mistrial on RCA Records, his fourteenth solo album. The album went to #47 on the Billboard chart in the US, and reached #69 on the UK charts. The disc featured the single No Money Down, which, as was typical at the time, was accompanied by a music video. That video featured an animatronic Lou Reed, which you can see for yourself here. No sure that makes you want your MTv.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Lou on tour in support of Mistrial at The Ritz in New York City on July 16, 1986, 32 years ago today,

When you think on Lou Reed, you probably first think of his singing and song writing abilities.Rolling Stone also took note of his guitar work, ranking him #52 on their 2003 list and #81 on their 2011 list of the top 100 guitarists of all time. The magazine wrote that "Lou Reed has been blowing traditional guitar styles to bits since his Velvet Underground days. A fan of Ike Turner's R&B and Ornette Coleman's free jazz, he created epic bad-trip psychedelia on songs like "Sister Ray." "He was rightfully quite proud of his own soloing," wrote fellow New York guitar luminary Robert Quine, "but resigned to the fact that most people weren't ready for it." As a solo artist, Reed kept on ripping up the rule book: See 1975's Metal Machine Music, a noise opus that took feedback further than Hendrix could have imagined." While the comparison to Jimi may be a bit of a reach, Lou could certainly handle a guitar, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from July17, 1975, 42 years ago today.
