Lesh Quintet 2002 - Back To Back - #1: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who of rock & roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, Joan Osborne, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. Perhaps the most reknown, and certainly the most beloved, line up was the Phil Lesh Quintet, nicknamed the Q. That group, featured, in adddition to Lesh, Warren Haynes on guitar & vocals, Jimmy Herring on guitar, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, and John Molo on drums. The Q's original run, from 2002 to 2003, produced some of the best shows ever played by any iteration of Phil & Friends.  This soundboard recording captures The Q at the first night of the Gathering Of The Vibes festival on July 5, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

2020s - #3: On March 15, 2023, just 3 years ago today, the late, great Phil Lesh celebrated his 83rd birthday on stage at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NJ, as captured in this webcast recording. The Capitol, which was a concert hall in the early 1970s, then functioned as a broadway style theater and catering hall foor almost 4 decades before re-opening as a concert venue in 2012, has become sort of a home away from home for Phil & Friends. In fact, tonight, he'll be there again, celebrating birthday #78. Of course, Phil's connection to the venue went back to his days with the Grateful Dead, who played 17 shows at the Capitol between March 1970 and February 1971. Jerry Garcia loved the venue, once proclaiming that "there’s only two theaters, man… that are set up pretty groovy all around for music and for smooth stage changes, good lighting and all that – the Fillmore and The Capitol Theatre. And those are the only two in the whole country.” Little wonder then that the lobby bar at the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's. In any event, this would be Phil's next to last birthday celebration at the venue.  He would return again in 2024, just 7 months prior to his passing in Octiber that year.

2000s - #4: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock, and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this FM broadcast from Boston from November 23, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Warren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints with Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. The incredible 2001 line up also featured drummer John Molo and keyboard plater Rob Barraco.

For 30 years, Phil Lesh stood on the opposite side of the stage form Jerry Garcia, the 2 end points in the base of a triangle with Bob Weir out front. If Garcia's guitar pointed the way as the Dead segued from song to jam to song, Phil's bass was right there with him, helping lead the band unlike any other bass player had ever done, Yet if Phil's playing was often out front, he rarely took that role on stage. Yes, he occasionally took a lead vocal, but he hardly seemed like the type to lead a band. Yet, in the wake of Jerry death, that's exactly what Phil did. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, those friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. 2020s - #6: In recent years, the Capitol Theater in Westchester has regained the prominence as a rock venue that it held way back in the early 1970s. The fabled theater, which in the 1970s hosted bands such as The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Leon Russell, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, eventually closed as a concert hall, then spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall. In 2012, however, the Capitol once again became a rock and roll venue. In doing so, it never forgot its jam band roots. The bar in the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's, in honor of the late great spiritual leader and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead. And a new generation of jam bands have made the Capitol home, including Govt Mule,  the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Phil Lesh & Friends.  Lesh and his assorted friends have played over 100 shows at the Capito, including spring runs in celebration on his birthday and fall residencies known as Phil-O-Ween! This webcast recording captures Phil on night 8 of his 9 show stand in fall 2022, on October 29, 2022, just 2 years ago today.  PS - when I selected this show to post about a month ago, I had no idea it would come just a few days after Phi's passing.  Lesh was undeniably one of the most innovative bass players in history, not to mention a man decicated to his family and charitable causes.  He will be sorely missed - may he rest in peace.

2000s -#3: In 1998, Phil Lesh began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends in 1998, after he had returned to performing following the death of his friend and band mate Jerry Garcia in 1995. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures the 2004 version of Phil & Friends in Corte Madera, on April 24, 2004, 2 decades ago today.  Phil's former Grateful Dead bandmate, Bob Weir, sits in for the entire show.
