In my book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned At My First Concert, Rule #5 is "Rock Concerts Are Rarely Played At Venues Meant For Music". Afterall, venues such as Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium, and MetLife Stadium were built for sports first, concerts second.  In addition, I've seen shows in such unlikely places as a parking lot, the side of a hill, and an ice skating rink, just to add further proof. That said, I've never seen a concert on an aiplane, whch is exactly where Sheryl Crow performed on May 4, 2004, 22 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast. Sheryl played a 45 minute acoustic show from Row 31 of a chartered United Airlines 777 making a trip from Chicago to Los Angeles. Billed as the first concert played at an altitude of 35,000, Sheryl's performance celebrated the launch of Sony's first foray into the online music market, the Sony Connect store, while marking a unique partnership with United Airlines. The mood on board was celebratory from the captain's opening welcome, that "today we fly as the Crow flies," to Crow’s performance as the plane glided over the Grand Canyon. Crow clearly was enjoying herself, at one point jokingly telling the invited guests "So, I can’t lie to you. It's been a really long time since I've been in the coach section." And, as she got ready to perform her last number, telling the other passengers" "When I'm done with this song, I'm going to put on a parachute and jump out!".

Bowie 2004 - Back to Back - #1: On September 16, 2003, Bowie released the album Reality, his 23rd studio disc. The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The tour was cut short in June 2004, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure. This soundboard recording captures Bowie just a few month's before the tour's premature end, on February 2, 2004, 22 years ago today, in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. Davis was a significant figure in the history of American music, especially folk, blues, gospel and ragtime.  His songs, such as Samson and Delilah, You Got to Move, Candy Man, and Death Don’t Have No Mercy have been covered by artists as varied as Peter-Paul-&Mary, Joan Baez, the Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, and the Rolling Stones. John Kadlecik 2004 - Back To Back - #1: In 1997, John Kadlecik co-founded Dark Star Orchestra, which was originally intended to be a one night a week Dead cover band. Before long all the group members quit their other projects and began concentrating on the group full-time. The band would often recreate set lists from a particular night in Grateful Dead history. Kadlecik had an uncanny ability to emulate Jerry Garcia's playing and singing style.  So much so, that in 2009, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, original members of the Grateful Dead, asked him to join Furthur, one of the many projects that the former members of the Dead embarked on after the death of Jerry Garcia. He would also later play as part of Phil Lesh & Friends. This soundboard recording captures John playing alongside Melvin Seals, who for many years was the keyboard player for the Jerry Garcia Band,  Afton on October 8, 2004,  21 years ago today. Robert Hunter - 2004-08-08 - Camden, NJ (SBD) 

Robert Hunter, who wrote or co-wrote many of the Grateful Dead's best known tunes (Uncle John's Band, Truckin, Friend Of The Devil and Dark Star, just to name a few), started his association with Jerry Garcia in the early 1960's, when the two played together in blue grass bands, In the 70's and 80's, Hunter often served as the led-in band for Garcia's solo concerts. When the Grateful Dead entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hunter, at Garcia's insistence was included as part of the band! Garcia and Hunter were also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2015. This soundboard recording captures Hunter in Camden on August 8, 2004, 21 years ago today!

Two decades ago this very day, on September 28, 2004, the Allman Brothers took a day off from touring to play a special live show at the XM Performance Theater in Washington, DC.  The band played the entire Eat A peach album live, intersperesed with interviews and recollections of both recording the album and Duane Allman.  The disc was the last Duane appeared on and its title came from his quote "You can't help the revolution, because there's just evolution ... Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace".  This XM broadcast captures that historic broadcast in its entirety.

The band members who were inducted -  Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanny Johanson, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks - reflects the band's original line up from the early 1970s.  Later members, such as Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks and Allen Woody, just to name a few, were not included.

This sounboard recording captures The Allmans on March 26, 2004, 2 decades ago today, during one of their legendsry resedencies at the Beacon Theater in New York. Between 1989 and 2014, the Allmans Broters Band played over 170 shows at the Beacon. The band even celebrated their 40th anniversary at the venue, with 15 sold out shows packed with guest stars.

The Who entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.  That class also featured Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, The Kinks, and Simon & Garfunkel, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording captures The Who in London on March 22, 2004, 20 years ago today (to quote Sgt. Pepper).  The concert was openinmg night of a world tour in support of the album Then & Now, a greatest hits collection that also featured 2 new songs - Real Good Looking Boy and Old Red Wine.  Te tour would take the abnd to North America, Australia and Japan agter a series of shows in the UK.

2004 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2004-03-15 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremomy was a rare one as almost every inductee not only showed up, but also played live.  The only one not present was the late George Harrison, but the tribute to him produced one of the iconic moments in the Hall's history.  Harrison was inducted by his Traveling Wilbury partners Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne, who performed Handle With Care.  They were them joined by Prince and Harrison's son, Dhani, for a breathtaking version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. How good was it - well cleveland.com ranked it as the best Induction Ceremony performance of all time.

Elton John - 2004-11-04 - Atlanta GA (SBD) 

As I've discussed on several occasions on this blog, my very first concert was Elton John at Madison Square Garden on August 15, 1976. That show was the inspiration for my book,TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL. Since then, I've seen him 5 more times, all at The World's Most Famous Arena, including:

1. a performance in 1992 during his The One tour, 
2. a outstanding solo show in October 1999, 
3. a 30th anniversary tribute to the Captain Fantastic album in September 2005, 
4. his 60th birthday concert, which was also his 60th concert at MSG, in March 2007 
5. and a concert in November 2018 during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.. 

Elton is one of those rare artists, like Paul McCartney, where you can attend a show, hear 30 great tunes, and still make a list of #1 hits and classics he didn't play! (case in point - the last time I saw Elton he didn't play Honky Cat, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word,  or Captain Fantastic, just to name 3!).

This soundboard recording captures Sir Elton in Atlanta on November 4, 2004, 19 years ago today, and just a few days before the release of the Peachtree Road album. The show was a fitting site for the debut performances of songs from that disc, since not only were parts of the album recorded in Atlanta, but also the disc is named after a street in the city near of one Elton's homes.  By the way, when I saw Elton in September 2005, in addition to playing about 8 songs from the Captain Fantastic album, he played about the same number from Peachtree Road, not to mention 15 of his greatest hits!  NOTE - this link is a test a a site called gofile - let me know how that works!

Eddie Money - 2004-05-28 - Detroit MI (FM)

I'm wondering how many folks simply know the late Eddie Money as the guy in the Geico commercial who owns a travel agency. I give him a lot of credit for being able to poke some fun at himself in that commercial, singing lines to Two Tickets to paradise to a befuddled family! (They need 4 tickets and leave in 2 weeks, not tonight). In any event, Eddie rang up a pretty good career in the 1980s, inducing 4 platinum albums and 9 top 40 singles. His biggest hit was in Take me Home Tonight in 1986, which climbed all the way to #4 on the Billboard charts, That tune featured a duet with Ronnie Spector, who sngs the chorus from her hit, Be My Baby. This soundboard recording captues Eddie about 2 decades after his hey day and 8 years before his Geico commercial, in Detroit on May 28, 2004, 19 years ago today.
