We’ll have 2 posts for you today, and both fit our March theme of concerts with guest stars! First up, we go back 51 years ago today, to March 14, 1961, where we catch the Johnny Cash Show in Houston. In the early 1960’s, Cash, backed by the Tennessee Three, would tour the US accompanied by a host of other country western artists. This concert also features Johnny Western, Gordon Terry, Claude Gray, and Rose Maddox, as well legends Roger Miller and George Jones before they were famous! This soundboard recording captures the entire performance from Johnny Western’s opening number to Johnny Cash’s concluding set. This one is an historic treasure and a must have for your collection.

Roger Miller - 1991-02-16 - Alexandria, VA (SBD)

Our second country western post of February features the legendary Roger Miller. His official website describes Miller as a “songwriter, singer, guitarist, fiddler, drummer, TV star, humorist, honky-tonk man, Broadway composer, and perhaps above all else, an awesome wit.” That description is far from an overstatement. Miller wrote and recorded countless number one singles, such as the legendary tune, King of The Road. He hosted his own TV show. He wrote the music for the Broadway play, Big River, for which he won a Tony award for best score in 1986. He even acted in that play, portraying Huck Finn's father Pap for three months after the exit of actor John Goodman. Miller continued to perform right up until his death in 1992 from lung cancer. This soundboard recording captures him during his final tour, on February 16, 1991, 21 years ago today, in Alexandria VA. Another legend whose music needs to be in every rock fan’s collection.
