Grateful Dead - 1972-08-21 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

By the middle of 1972, the Grateful Dead had evolved in a number of ways as a band. Pigpen's last hurrah had been during the recently completed Europe 72 tour.  He played one show upon the band's return to the US on June 17, then left the band to deal with the effects of alcohol abuse that would take his life the following year. Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the band, giving the group a different sound. The pure psychedelia of 1969 had been augmented with a host of new tunes from the albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, that had a folk rock flavor and emphasized harmonies. Jams that once emerged from Pigpen tunes such as Alligator or Hard To Handle now sprung from songs such as Truckin' or Playing In The Band. Amidst all that, Jerry Garcia remained the band's musical and spiritual leader, always at the center of whatever magic they would produce each night. This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that transitional time on the st night of a 4 night stand at The Berkeley Community Theater on August 21, 1972, 53 years ago today   Download this one, then come bac tomorrow for a 2nd show from this run.  By the way, despite all the changes, the band was in peak form in August 1972, with both the last night in Berkeley on August 25 and the legendary Venetta show on August 27 being officially released.

1970s - #1: By the end of 1971, it was clear that Elton John was on the verge of super stardom. Critics and fans alike recognized his talent for producing great songs (Your Song, Levon and Tiny Dancer had all made the Billboard charts) and putting on high energy concerts (as captured on the live disc 11-17-70). In early 1972, Davey Johnstone joined the band on guitar and vocals, adding the final piece to the puzzle. In May 1972, Elton released the album Honky Chateau, which became his first number 1 album in the US, spending five weeks at the top of the charts and spawning the hits Rocket Man and Honky Cat. Elton, his lyricist Bernie Taupin, his backing band of Johnston, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsen, and his producer Gus Dudgeon, would combine to rule the pop charts from 1972 to 1976, as 6 albums and 6 singles hit #1. This soundboard, therefore, from 53 years ago today, May 3, 1972, from Notre Dame University, truly captures Elton at the start of his rise to the top! Enjoy!

1970s - #1: On April 2, 1972, 43 years ago today, a struggling artist by the name of Billy Joel played the Mar Y Sol Festival in Puerto Rico, as captured in this soundboard recording.  Joel's debut album, Cold Springs Harbor had sold poorly, and it wasn't helped by a mastering error that caused the tape to run too fast, which resulted in Joel's voice sounding unnaturally high pitched. He later jokingly said he sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks!  Fortunately for Joel, his performance at the festival was brought to the attention of Walter Yetnikoff,  who signed the young singer/songwriter to a contract.  And the rest, as trhey say, is history!

GD 1972 - Back To Back - #1: For the Grateful Dead, the year 1972 would be a transitional one, marked by some incredible high points but marred by sadness. The band would integrate new keyboardist Keith Godchaux (who joined in late 1971) and his wife, vocalist Donna Jean, into the band. The Dead would travel to Europe, a legendary venture originally marked by the triple album, Europe 72, and later commemorated by the official release of every show from that tour. On August 27, 1972, the band would play a show at Veneta, OR which Deadheads rank along with the May 8, 1977 Cornell show as one for the ages. Alcohol abuse finally caught up with founding member and organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who played his last show with the band on July 17, 1972, and eventually passed away in March 1973, another rocker whose lifestyle cost him his life at age 27. With Pigpen departing the band, the Dead lost some of their bluesy roots. The band began experimenting with some jazz influenced material, as evident on the album Wake of the Flood released the following year. As many of you know, 1973 and 1974 are often considered (along with 1977) as the Dead's peak, but 1972 set the stage. The soundboard recording captures the Dead on March 21, 1972, 53 years ago today, on night 1 of a a legendary 7 show run at the Academy Of Music in New York, perfromances that served as a warm up for the Europe 72 tour.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back Set.

08. Madman Across the Water
09. Burn Down the Mission
10. Goodbye

In late 1971, Elton John released the album Madman Across The Water, which rose to #8 on the Billboard charts. The two singles from the disc, Levon and Tiny Dance, would climb reach chart at #24 and #41, respectively. The songs on Madman, similar to those on his 3 previous albums, Tumbleweed Connection, the self titled Elton John, and Empty Sky, would often feature strings and lush orchestration. Numerous session musicians performed on the disc, as his record company limited Elton to using his touring band for only 1 song per album. Given the arrangements of these early tunes, it was a natural fit for Elton to perform them with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This FM broadcast captures that performance on February 5, 1972, 53 years ago today in London. Yet, even while Elton was performing with an orchestra, his music was about to go in new direction. He was in the process of completing the album Honky Chateau, a more rock influenced disc which would eventually become his first of numerous number 1 albums in the US. Perhaps, then it was only fitting that his last song with The Royal Philharmonic was entitled Goodbye, as Elton was about to leave one stage of his career and move on to world wide super stardom.

On October 29, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band lost their co-founder, brother, guitarist, and spiritual leader in a tragic motorcycle accident. The death of Duane Allman could have crippled the band, but brother Greg, Dickie Betts, Berry Oakley Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and Berry Oakley soldiered on. They went back out on the road in 1972, with Oakley playing a major role in keeping the band together, both on and off the stage. Incredibly, Oakley, the new de facto leader of the band would meet the same fate as his predecessor. He also died in a motorcycle accident, in November 1972, just over a year after Duane, at an intersection 3 blocks from where the guitarist perished. Even that tragedy, however, could not stop the Allmans. Somehow, just over a month after that second tragedy, on December 31, 1972, 52 years ago today, they took the stage in New Orleans, as captured in this soundboard recording.  And they would continue to be a force in music the following year, releasing the single Ramblin’ Man which went to #2 on the Billboard charts.

Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little-known singer/songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - in terms of songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. After the release of the duo’s first album in November 1971, Loggins and Messina went on tour in 1972. This soundboard recording captures them at the legendary Troubadour in Hollywood, on February 24, 1972, 52 years ago today.

In November 1971, Traffic released the disc, The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys, the band;s 5th studio album. The album climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts, and went gold by February 1972, thought it would be another 24 years before the album went platinum in 1996! Critical opinion of the album varied. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the disc a B, though his comments were harsher than his grade, as he led off the review by stating that “These guys waste their talent”. The All Music Guide, on the other hand, pronounced that Low Spark “marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic”. Pop Matters offered yet another viewpoint, calling it “an album that’s easy to listen to over and over, but one that seldom shows up on “best of” lists.” Today we bring you an excellent soundboard of Traffic from February 21, 1972, 52 years ago today! This soundboard recording captures Traffic just 3 months after the album's release, on February 21, 1972, 52 years ago today.
