Phil & Friends 2001 - Back To Back - #1: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock, and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this soundboard recording from Asbury Park from April 29, 2001, 21 years ago todayWarren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list if the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of Course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. The incredible 2001 line up also featured drummer John Molo and keyboard plater Rob Barraco.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Pink Floyd 1975- Back to Back - #1: After only playing only 27 shows in 1974, all in Europe, Pink Floyd launched a full scale North American tour on April 8, 1975 that ran all the way to June 28. The tour was unique in several respects. First, while the shows were often referred to as the Wish You Were Here tour, the album by that name would not be released until September of that year. The band did play both the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite (all 9 parts) and Have A Cigar from that soon to be released disc, but they had not yet completed either the title track or Welcome To The Machine. Second, the opening 2 songs of each concert, Raving and Drooling and You've Got To Be Crazy, were actually early versions of Sheep and Dogs, two tunes which would not appear in final form until the release of their 1977 album, Animals. Finally, for the last part of each show, Pink Floyd played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album, the last time the band would do so with Roger Waters. This excellent audience recording, from legendary taper Mike Millard, captures Pink Floyd near the start of the tour, in Los Angeles on April 21, 1975, 47 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Bruce Hornby 1996 - Back To Back - #1: The year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of Bruce Hornsby's Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in 1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. Given all that, we figured it would be great to bring yo a host this month a host of shows from Hornsby's 1996 spring tour so you could see for yourself the evolution of his musical style. This soundboard recording captures, Hornsby on April 22, 1996, 26 years ago today in St. Louis,  Download this one, come back later tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this set.

Legion Of Mary 1975 - Back To Back - #1: During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to forming a new band known as Legion of Mary. In addition to Garcia, Legion of Mary (LOM) included Merl Saunders on keyboard, Martin Fierro on sax, and Ron Tutt on drums. While the band’s tenure was short, Garcia used it to continue to explore and experiment with a host of musical styles. In their live shows, the band melded together an eclectic mix blues, funk, reggae, rock, psychedalia, and especially jazz. This set from Milwaukee, WI on April 20, 1975, 47 years ago today, is a perfect example of the breath and range of music covered by LOM. The band played R&B songs such as I Feel Like Dynamite and That's What Love Will Make You Do, Motown tunes such as Boogie On Reggae Women and I’m A Road Runner, jazz numbers such as Favela, and reggae classics such as Sitting In Limbo and The Harder They Come. Perhaps almost as interesting is that the 2 nights do not include Grateful Dead tune. Download this soundboard, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this entry.
