Johnny Cash - 1970-04-17 - Washington DC (FM)

Johnny Cash entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, alongside the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Sam & Dave, and The Yardbirds, just to name 3 other members of that class. Cash was such an influential figure in music that he was also inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

This FM Broadcast captures Cash playing a set for then President Nixon at the White House on April 17, 1970, 56 years ago today.  Nixon was hoping to use Cash's appearance to garner support from the singer's immense fan base for the Republican Party.  Cash, however, declined to play songs such as Okie from Muskogee with its anti hippie theme and Welfare Cadillac, which presented a distorted view of the welfare system in America. Instead, he played What Is Truth, a song that questioned war, and highlighted discrimination.

Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.

Johnny Cash appeared at the First Farm Aid in 1985, and was back in both 1992 and 1993. In all 3 cases, he performed with the Highwaymen, the all star band which also included Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Farm Aid founder, Willie Nelson. 

This soundboard recording captures him 3 years after his final Farm Aid performance, on September 7, 1996, 29 years ago today, at Irving Plaza in New York City.

Unlike other years, the 1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony had no drama to overshadow the honoress or the muisc.  Both Neil Young and the Iseley Brothers played tunes in honor of the late, great Jimi Hendrix, while Santana played I Love You Too Much in honor of promoter Bill Graham.  And the Hall got something right by inducting the Man In Black, Johnny Cash, who played Big River and traded guitar licks with the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds.

Johnny Cash - 1964-07-25 - Newport, RI (SBD)

1960s - #4: The Newport Folk Festival was founded in 1959 by George Wein, who was also the founder of the already-well-established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival introduced to a national audience a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez by her appearance as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959, and Bob Dylan, in turn a guest of Baez at the 1963 festival. Newport is also legendary as being the site where Dylan plugged in and went electric in 1965. The festival was not strictly limited to folk performers. For example, in the early 1960s legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Johnny Cash all performed at Newport. This soundboard recording features Johnny Cash’s set on July 25, 1964, 59 years ago today. Folk legend Pete Seeger introduced Cash, who included a version of Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice in his set. After the show, Cash gave Dylan his guitar, a country western tradition for showing admiration of another act. 1995 - While the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame foundation began in 1983 and inducted its first class in 1986, the organization didn’t have a physical structure to honor the inductees and tell the story of their music until 1995. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum opened in the city of Cleveland on September 1,  1995. The next night, September 2, 1995, 2 dozen years ago this very day, Cleveland Stadium hosted an All Star concert to commemorate the event, as captured in this FM Broadcast.  We actually posted an abbreviated version of this show a few years ago but now, by combining 2 sources, we have the concert in its entirety.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Johnny Cash had his career rejuvenated as he gained popularity with an audience which was not traditionally considered interested in country music. For example, in 1988, British post-punk musicians Marc Riley (formerly of the Fall) and Jon Langford (the Mekons) put together 'Til Things Are Brighter, a tribute album featuring mostly British-based indie-rock acts' interpretations of Cash's songs. Cash was enthusiastic about the project, telling Langford that it was a "morale booster": Roseanne Cash later said "he felt a real connection with those musicians and very validated... It was very good for him: he was in his element. He absolutely understood what they were tapping into, and loved it". The album attracted press attention on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1991, he sang a version of "Man in Black" for the Christian punk band One Bad Pig's album I Scream Sunday. In 1993, he sang "The Wanderer" on U2's album Zooropa which was the closing track. According to Rolling Stone writer, Adam Gold,"The Wanderer" – written for Cash by Bono, "defies both the U2 and Cash canons, combining rhythmic and textural elements of Nineties synth-pop with a Countrypolitan lament fit for the closing credits of a Seventies western.". Johnny Cash - 2003-07-05 - Hiltons, VA (SBD)

On May 15, 2003, Johnny Cash lost his wife of 35 years, when June Carter Cash passed away at the age of 73. June had told Johnny Cash to keep working, so he continued to record, completing 60 more songs in the last four months of his life, and even performed a couple of surprise shows at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia. This soundboard recording captures his final public performance on July 5, 2003,  15 years ago this very day.

Before singing Ring Of Fire, Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.”

Just over 2 months later, Cash died of complications from diabetes on September 12, 2003 while hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. Many have suggested that Johnny’s health worsened due to a broken heart over June’s death. That day we lost a legend, but his spirit lives in the music he left behind.

Johnny Cash - 1989-03-20 - Minneapolis, MN (SBD)

The 1980's were a difficult period for the Man in Black. His impact on the Country Music charts waned, his long time record company, Columbia, stopped marketing his work, he had a relapse of drug addiction and underwent double bypass heart surgery. He was so frustrated with Columbia that he actually recorded a song called Chicken in Black, about his brain being transplanted into a chicken. That tune helped sever the relationship between Cash and Columbia. Despite his troubles, Cash did have some positive moments during the decade. In 1986, he teamed with Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins on the album Class of '55. He continued to tour successfully, with the Highwayman early in the decade, and later, with wife June Carter and the Carter family. Johnny Cash - 1981-04-23 - Stuttgart, West Germany, (SBD)

The Highwaymen - Together & Solo #4: In addition to being part of the Highwaymen, Johnny Cash was also a member of the Million Dollar Quartet, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Those 4 came together for a recording session  on December 4, 1956 at Sun record Studios in Memphis.  Incredibly, the recording remained lost in the Sun archives until 1981 when17 tracks were discovered and released. Additional tracks have been leased since. Moreover, the nistoric session spawned a entire Broadway musical, which ran for two years and included almost 500 performances. This soundboard recording captures 3/4 of the Million Dollar Quartet on tour together in Europe on April 23, 1981, 3 dozen years ago this very day!

Johnny Cash appeared at the First Farm Aid in 1985, and was back in both 1992 and 1993.  In all 3 cases, he performed with the Highwaymen, the all star band which also included  Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson. and Farm Aid founder, Willie Nelson.  Carl Perkins appeared at Farm AId in 1990, performing his classic renditions of Matchbox and Blu Suede Shoes.

This soundboard recording captures Cash and Perkins on tour together, in Manchester on September 3, 1973, 43 years ago today.

On June 22, 1963, 53 years ago today, KFOX Radio in Los Angeles presented Country Night at The Bowl, a star studded extravaganza featuring some of the biggest names in Country Music.  The line up that night included Walter Brennan, George Jones, June Carter (not yet married to Johnny), and Loretta Lynn, just to name a few, and the entire evening was topped off by set from the Man In Black, This FM broadcast captures that historic performance by Johnny Cash, just 5 songs  long but featuring 2 of his best know tunes, Ring of Fire and Folsom prison Blues.

Think of country music and the names Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash immediately spring to mind.  Add Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings and you have a virtual Mount Rushmore of Country Music. The superstar quartet recorded 3 albums together between 1985 and 1995: Highwaymen in 1985, Highwaymen 2 in 1990 and The Road Goes On Forever in 1995. This soundboard recording from The Greek Theater in Los Angeles captures them on tour in support of that final disc, on June 4, 1996, 2 decades ago this very day.
