I saw EC twice in concert, both times at Madison Square Garden. The first was in April 1987, one of the best shows I've ever attended and then again in April 1990. The 1987 show was actually taped for a live album, but that project was shelved and it was never released. I saw Steve Winwood for the first and only time (so far) in Morristown on September 24, 2025. Incredibly fortunate to catch him at a theater that seats just 1000 people! He played all the tunes expected from his solo career, and stints with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. By the way, I got to hear both EC and Winwood play Can't Find My Way home live!

What I haven't seen unfortunately, is Clapton and Winwood on stage together.  They first collaborated, of course, in Blind Faith way back in 1969.  In the early 21st century, they joined forces once again after almost 4 decades, playing together in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  This excellent audeince recording captures the duo in Belgrade on June 2, 2010, 16 years ago today.

Furthur 2010 - Back To Back - #1: Furthur named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band, following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way. This soundboardrecording captures the band in Delaware on February 22, 2010, 16 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set.

Historical notes: The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

Buffalo Springfield 2010 - Back To Back - #2: As promsed yesterday, here's the 2nd half of our Back to Back set featuring Buffalo Springfield's reunion at the 2010 Brodge School Benefit. This one is an excellent audience recording from the 2nd night at the Bridge, on October 24, 2010, 15 years ago today, again featuring Neil, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay together on stage after a 42 years hiatus. Unfortunately, the reunion was short lived. After a brief Spring 2011 tour, the three went their separate ways again, which may finally spell the end of Buffalo Springfield.

Buffalo Springfield 2010 - Back To Back - #1: Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down. The sound – legendary tunes such For What Its Worth, Nowaday's Clancy Can’t Even Sing, Kind Women and Mr. Soul being played live. What was going down – well, it was history in the making, a sight most rock fans thought they would never again see, as Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay took the stage together. “We're Buffalo Springfield, thank you very much” proclaimed Young. Forty two years had passed between the last time the Springfield had played a concert on May 5, 1968 and their reunion show (sans original members Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, who passed away in 2004 and 2009, respectively) on October 23, 2010, 15 years ago today, at Neil’s annual Bridge School Benefit. To put that in perspective, when that 1968 concert took place, vinyl albums still ruled and recorded cassette tapes were just 2 years old. The show itself occurred in between the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. Baseball still had 2 leagues with no divisions. In football, the AFL and NFL were rival leagues, and Super Bowl III, where the Jets beat the Colts leading to the merger of the 2 leagues, was still months away. Ivy League schools had yet to admit women. The Vietnam War still raged and the USSR and the Communist Bloc nations posed the greatest threat to the security of the United States. Man had yet to orbit or walk on the moon. The introduction of Mattel’s Hot Wheels cars, the launch of the motion picture ratings guide (G, PG, R, etc) and the debut of 60 Minutes on television would not happen until later in 1968. The Beatles were still together, and just about to launch Apple. Clapton was still part of Cream. Jimi and Janice were still alive, Elvis had yet to make his comeback, and Woodstock was still over a year away. Yes, much  changed in the 4 decades between Buffalo Springfield performances but one thing did not. Their music is still among the finest ever recorded and it still resonates with audiences today as strongly as it did in the 1960s. This excellent audience tape captures every note of that historic reunionDownlaod this one, then stop back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back set.

As mentioned in our post yesterday, The Beatles did not play at Woodstock, though the exact reason why isn't clear.  Some folks wonder if history might have been different if the organizers had reached out to Paul McCartney instead of John Lennon. Paul was always more interested in having The Beatles return to live performing than any other member of the Fab Four. And he didn't carry the burden of insisting that Yoko be allowed to take the stage. In the end, George's complete refusal to perform in front of an audience, coupled with the band's ever growing tensions that would lead to their breakup in 1970, probably would have kept The Beatles away no matter who the organizers contacted. It is fun to imagine, however,  the Fab Four playing their final show in front of a crowd "a half a million strong" as opposed to on a rooftop in London.

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Sir Paul exactly 41 years after Woodstock (and 45 after the legendary Shea Stadium show referenced in our Beatles post) in Philadelphia on August 15, 2010, 14 years ago today.

The 2010 Rock & Roll Hall Of  Fame ceremony featured a list of inductees who truly stretched the boundaries of rock, ranging from Abba to Genesis to The Hollies to the Stooges to Jimmy Cliff.  Genesis didn't perform and Peter Gabriel was a no-show, but Phish, who inducted them, played a set of their tunes. Graham Nash earned his second entry into the Hall as a member of The Hollies, his first having come with CSN. That made CSNY the first band to have all 4 of its members inducted twice (The Beatles would be the second when Ringo was inducted in 2015), though ironically the band is not in the hall! You see, CSN was inducted as a band and Neil Young was honored for his solo career.  Then Neil and Stephen Stills earned their 2nd entries as members of Buffalo Spriingfield while Crosby gained his second as a member of The Byrds.  Jimmy Cliff, who was moved to tears by his induction, performed a stunning set of his biggest hits, You Can Get It If You Really Want, Many Rivers To Cross and The Harder They Come, but unfortunately, it is no where to be found on the web.  If anyone has it, please share!

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on March 15, 2010, 14 years ago today..  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

2010s - 04:Early in 2010, Neil Young flew to Los Angeles, CA to begin work on his 33rd studio album. Neil brought in Daniel Lanois to produce the disc, which resulted in calling the album Le Noise, a pun on the producer’s last name. The disc featured Neil solo, on both acoustic and electric guitar. Le Noise was released in September 2010, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard charts while receiving positive reviews from Rolling Stone, Blare Magazine, and The Guardian, just to name 3. On May 18, 2010, even before the album hit stores, Neil went on tour playing tunes from Le Noise, such as Walk With Me and Sign Of Love, alongside classics like My My, Hey Hey and Cinnamon Girl. This excellent audience recording captures Neil during that run, on July 11, 2010, 13 years ago today, at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA.

I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Shery's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them!

This IEM recording captures Sheryl in Edmonton on June 28, 2010, 13 years ago today.

2010s - #4: Furthur, named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band, following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way. This soundboard matrix recording captures the band at thje site of one of the Grateful Dead''s most legendary concerts (5/08/1977), Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell Univerity, on February 14, 2010, 13 years ago today.

Historical notes - The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

2010s - #5: On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This IEM Matrix recording  captures the band during the 2nd European leg of theour, in Spain, on September 26, 2010, a dozen years ago today.

The Happy Together tour, which began in 1985, was the brainchild of Flo & Eddie (real names - Mark Voman and Howard Kaylan), who were original members of The Turtles, a band with direct ties to 1967.  In fact, the 25th anniversary of the Happy Together Tour, as captured in the excellent audience recording from June 26, 2010, a dozen yearss ago today, features 5 acts, each one linked to 1967 in one way of another:
  • The Turtles: Had their only #1 hit in 1967, Happy Together (hence the name of the tour!), which knocked Penny Lane out of the top spot. Happy Toegther was an excellent example of an interesting dichotomy in music in 1967. While critical attention in 1967 was focused on the psychedelic sounds of albums such as Sgt Pepper's and Surrealistic Pillow, the singles chart was still filled with breezy pop tunes and one hit wonders.  Songs such as Windy by The Association, Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, to Sir With Love by Lulu and Ode to Billy Joe all went to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1967.
  • The Buckinghams:  Also had a #1 hit in 1967, with the tune Kind Of A Drag. That song spent two weeks in the top spot, sandwhiched between I'm A Bbeliver and Ruby Tuesday. All in all, the band had 3 top 10 singles and 5 top 40 hist that year!
  • Paul Revere & The Raiders: Had a top 25 album ion 1967, entitled Revolution, while having 4 top 40 singles, including "Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be" which went to #5 on the Billbaord charts.
  • The Grass Roots: Released the tune Let' Live For Today in 1967, which climbed to #8 on the Billbaoard charts. That may be the band's 2nd most famous and successful tune after Midnight Conession, which was released the following year and went to #5 on the charts.
  • The Monkees: Monkee-mania ran wild in 1967, as the band dominated not only the album charts but also the singles charts. The band had 4 albums go to #1 in 1967, including More Of The Monkees, which soent 18 weeks at the top, 3 more that Sgt Pepper's, and had six top 40 singles , including two at #1 in I'm A Believer and Daydream Believer; one at #2 in A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You and one at #3 in Pleasant Valley Sunday. Given that the Monkees were the biggest selling act in rock, the Monterey Pop organizers gave serious consideration to having them play the festival. In the end, they decided against it, but that didn't stop group members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork from attending. Tork even introduced Buffalo Springfield, his favorite group, as well as Lou Rawls. In addition, Tork was involved in a bizarre incident during the Grateful Dead's set where he tried to stop fans from climbing on stage and dancing. To top it off, he also informed the crowd that The Beatles were not at the festival in disguise. Even at Monterey Pop, The Beatles and The Monkees, without playing a note, remained linked.
