Every now and then, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame gets something roght, like when in 1987, at the 2nd induction ceremony, 3 blues legends - Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Bo Didley all  took their rightful place in the hall.  That was the largest class in the institution's history and also included that Aretha Franklin,  Big Joe Turner, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Clyde McPhatter, Eddie Cochran, Jackie Wilson, The Coasters, Marvin Gaye, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison and Smokey Robinson. Paul Butterfield handled the induction speech for Muddy.

For all of its faults - and the list is pretty long - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame occaisionally gets things right.  No better example is the 1987 induction class, which included several blues legends whose influence of rock & roll was profound - including Bo Diddley, BB King and Muddy Waters!

This soundboard recording captures Muddy at the Beacon on March 28, 1981, 43 years ago today. He gets some help from fellow bluesmen James Cotton and Johnny Winters.

Today we bring you another post featuring one of the legendary blues guitarists of our time. McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, is often cited as the father of modern Chicago blues. he influenced guitar legends such as Clapton, Page, Richards and Hendix.  Jimi once said "the first guitar player I was aware of was Muddy Waters. I first heard him as a little boy and it scared me to death. The Rolling Stones, of course, took their name from a Muddy Waters tune.  In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Every now and then at So Many Roads, we get the urge to play some good old fashioned blues music, and this month's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame theme gives us the perfect opportunity to do so.  The  late great Muddy Waters was inducted into the hall in 1987 as part of the largest class in the institution's history. Also entering the hall that year were Aretha Franklin, B.B. Muddy Waters - 1977-05-14 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Long time followers of So Many Roads have asked me to post more blues music. Our May 1977 theme provides me the perfect opportunity to do just that, by bringing you our first post from the legendary Muddy Waters. In October 1976, the one-time McKinley Morganfield left Chess Records and signed with Johnny Winters’ Blue Sky label. In just 3 day working with Winters, he recorded a new album, called Hard Again, which was released in January 1977. The album received rave critical reviews, including an A grade from Robert Christgau. The disc would go on to win a Grammy for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording. For Waters, who had been out of the spotlight for years, the album, plus his November 1976 appearance at The Band’s Last Waltz, launched him on the comeback trail. Muddy went on tour that spring in support of the album, including this show from San Francisco on May 14, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today.
