Crossroads Guitar Festival - 2007-07-28 - Bridgeview, IL (Part 4) (SBD)

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage followed a 3 song finale featuring all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

2001 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2010-03-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was defined by two bigger than life stars who didn't perform.  Michael Jackson accepted the honor live, but then exited. Queen performed several tunes, but of course, without Freddie Mecury who passed away a decade earlier. Paul Simon became a 2 time inductee, having been honored pereviously for his time with Simon & Garfunkel. Steely Dan, Aerosmith and Solomon Burke all took the stage after their inductions, while Ricky  Martin played a trio of songs in honor of Ritchie Valens.

1999 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1999-03-15 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The last Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class of the 20th century was loaded with star power, and they delivered what Rolling Stone magazine called "the most emotionally moving, musically satisfying night the Hall has ever seen,"  New York's own Billy Joel kicked off the night and New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen performed a rousing set with his faithful E-Street Band, who somehow were not inducted (the only flaw in the night - they would finally get in in 2014).  Eric Clapton paid tribute to Curtis Mayfield, then backed everyone for the rest of the evening, the quintessential always present, always reliable, never intrusive sideman. Melissa Etheridge honored the late Dusty Springfield and the Staple Singers brought the soul.  And it was all topped off with the induction of Sir Paul McCartney, who dedicated the night to his recently deceased wife, Linda.  McCartney kicked off the end of night jam with a rousing version of Blue Suede Shoes, paying homage to Carl Perkins in the process, then came back later for a surprise rendition of Let It Be to close the night.  Perfection.

The 2005 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductions featured something old and something new.  Jerry Lee Lewis and Bo Diddley commemorated the 50th anniversay of rock & roll with some help from Eric Clapton and the late Robbie Robertson. EC also sat in with Buddy Guy, as the legendary bluesman took his rightful place in the hall after far too long a wait (he'd been eligible since 1993!). U2 and The Pretenders highlighted the inductions, with the former getting some help from Bruce Springsteen and the latter from Neil Young.

Unlike other years, the 1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony had no drama to overshadow the honoress or the muisc.  Both Neil Young and the Iseley Brothers played tunes in honor of the late, great Jimi Hendrix, while Santana played I Love You Too Much in honor of promoter Bill Graham.  And the Hall got something right by inducting the Man In Black, Johnny Cash, who played Big River and traded guitar licks with the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds.

1993 Rock  & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1993-01-12 - Los Angeles, CA (TV SBD)

The 1993 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the first one not held in New York at the Waldorf Astoria, could be described by borrowing from Charles Dickens - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. "  On the bright side, all 3 members of Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce - showed up and played together for the first time since 1968. In addition, the suriving members of The Doors were all present, and played 3 songs with Eddie Vedder on vocals.  On the downside, Van Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the homor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  Far worse, while all 4 members of Creedence were in attendance for their induction, John Foegerty refused to play with them, continuing the 20 year old feud that effectively destroyed the band.  Instead, he was backed by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on 3 CCR tunes.

Guitar Legends Concert - 1991-10-18 - Seville, Spain (night 4) (FM)

SPAIN - As promised, here's night 4 of the Guitars Legend Concert from October 18, 1991, 28 years ago today,  Dubbed Folk Night, the show featured Roger McGuinn, Robbie Robertson, Roger Waters and Bruce Hornsby  The FM broadcast captures just part of the show. Interestingly, when I saw Bruce Hornsby in July 2018, he told a story about playing this show, and how it was the first time he had ever heard, let alone played on, Barren Ground by Robbie Robertson and Comfortably Numb by Roger Waters. He noted that he was so inspired by both songs that he not only added them to his concert set lists, but also wrote the tune Fortunate Son to try to mimic the sound and tone of  Comfortably Numb.  And then he played all 3 of those songs!
