Stills 1980 - Back To Back - #1: In 1978, Italian singer Angelo Branduardi launched the first Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, playing concerts along with other European musicians in Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Switzerland. Two years later, he embarked on the 2nd Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, this time including American artists Stephen Stills and Richie Havens. This FM broadcast captures a portion of Stephen Stills' set, backed by the California Blues Band, on the 2nd night of the tour, in Switzerland on July 17, 1980, 46 years ago today. As mentioned in our CSNY post earlier this month, Stephen Stills has been inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice - once with CSN and once with Buffalo Springfield. In fact, both those inductions occured on the same night as the 1997 ceremony, making Stills the only person ever to accomplish that feat!

This soundboard recordin goes back 2 years prior to those dual inductions, capturing Stills in Tulsa on April 14, 1995, 31 years ago today.

Stephen Stills - 1976-01-25 - Houston, TV (TV SBD) 

1970s - #4: On December 8, 1975, Bob Dylan brought the Rolling Thunder review to New York's Madison Square Garden for the final concert of that triumphant tour. The concert was also a benefit for boxer Rueben "Hurricane" Carter, who Dylan had written about in his song Hurricane. That tune alleged that Carter had been the victim of racism, leading to a unfair trial that convicted him of a murder he did not commit. The concert raised over $100,000 for Carter's legal expenses. The on January 25, 1976, 5 decades ago today, Dylan held a second benefit for Carter, this time in Houston. Also on the bill were Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Dr. John, Shawn Phillips, along with special guests Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, Richie Havens, and Carlos Santana. Thanks to the public attention brought to the case by the concerts and the song, Carter eventually won the right to a new trial, but was again convicted. Finally, in 1985, that conviction was overturned, with the US District Court in NJ stating that the case had been "based on racism rather than reason and concealment rather than disclosure." This TV soundboard recordimng captures Stephen Stills at that 2nd benefit for Carter in the Astrodome.

Neil Young & Stephen Stills - 2015-04-25 - Hollywood, CA (Ex Aud)

2010s - #5: The on again, off again musical relationship between Neil Young and Stephen Stills seems to be almost as old as rock and roll itself.  The two were in Buffalo Springfield together, though disputes between them saw Neil walking away from the band on several occaisions (for example, he missed their appearance at Monterrey Pop), before the band finally broke up in 1968. Neil rejoined Stephen as part of CSNY in 1969, but that lasted only until mid 1970.  CSNY regrouped in 1974 for a massive tour, only to split up once again by year's end.  Then Stills and Young joined up for a tour in 1976 but Neil quit after just 19 shows, sending a note that read “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil."  Over the next quarter century, the two mostly stayed apart, except for an occaisional charity gig such as Live Aid where CSNY reunited, or studio appearance, as when Young helped CSN record the album American Dream.  Then in 2000, CSNY got back together for a full tour, which was followed by tours in 2002 and 2006. In 2010, the 2, along with Richie Furay, reformed Buffalo Springfield for two Bridge School Benefit shows. Despite rumors of a national tour, the Springfield played just a half a dozen shows in June 2011 before calling it quits.  After that Stills andf Young again went their separate ways. They reunited for a good cause in April 25, 2015, a decade ago today as captured in this excellent audience recording, playing a set at the  Light Up The Blues Benefit: Autism Speaks benefit. Will they ever play together again? Given their track record, who the heck really knows?

Stephen Stills & Graham Nash - 1969-10-25 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

1960s - #7:  On October 25, 1969, 55 years ago today when the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were scheduled to play Winterland, one or more of the opening acts had to cancel. Stephen Stills and Graham Nash were at the venue as they were in San Francisco at the time recording the Deja Vu album with David Crosby and Neil Young, so they filled in, performing a short acoutic set as a duo, as captured in this soundboard recording  This show might be the only time just the 2 of them performed together, sans Crosby. The 2nd song of the night was Teach Your Children, which wouldn't be officially released until March 1970 when Deja Vu hit stores so this might be the first time the song was ever perfromed live. The set ends with Black Queen, a tune Stills had written in hope that the Grateful Dead would record it, though they never did.  When I saw Stills sit in with the Dead, however, in April 1983, they backed him oin that tune! Stephen Stills - 1976-11-07 - New Orleans, LA (SBD) 

I've seen Stephen Stills live on 9 occasions - once as a solo artist in July 1979, 6 times with CSN, once with CSNY and even once as a guest, when he sat in with the Grateful Dead in April 1983! This post, however, goes back before all those show, to the year 1976.  When Stephen Stills went on tour in the fall of 1976, he was on the outs with all 3 of his former partners. Neil had left him without warning in the middle of the Stills-Young Band tour earlier that year. Crosby & Nash were angry with him (and Neil) for wiping their vocals from early recordings of the Long May You Run album, after the pair had to leave the recording session to fulfill other contractual obligations. Eventually, all was forgiven and CSN reunited in 1977 and have been together ever since. Neil rejoined the trio many years later, in 2000, for a series of tours to launch the new century. This soundboard recording captures Stills flying solo, before he again made nice with his former bandmates, in New Orleans on November 7, 1976, 47 years ago today

In 2005, Stephrn Stills released Man Alive!, his first solo album in 14 years. The disc was released on the small English independent folk rock label Talking Elephant, and featured songs dating from the 70s to the present, including "Spanish Suite", originally recorded in the late 70s with Herbie Hancock. Throughout 2006 and 2007, Stills toured in support of the album with drummer Joe Vitale, either Mike Finnigan or session player Todd Caldwell on keyboards, and either Kevin McCormick or Kenny Passarelli on bass.  This FM broadcast captures Stills and his backing band promoting Man Alive onthe World Cafe radio show, on May 11, 2006, 17 years ago today.

1975 -  In June 1975, Stephen Stills released his 3rd solo; album, and first as part of his new deal with Columbia Records, entitled Stills.  The album was also his first since CSNY had broken up yet again in 1974. The disc went to #19 on the Billboard charts, those critical reviews were mixed.  The first single from the alnu, Turn Back The Pages, only went #84 on the Billboard charts. Stills launched the longest solo tour of his career in support of the album, playing almost 60 shows divided between two legs, one from June to August and the second from October to December.  This soundboard recording captures him near the very end of the tour, in Seattle, on December 8, 1975, 46 years ago today.

Following the collapse of Manassas and just prior to the monumental 1974 CSNY reunion tour, Stephen Stills hit the road with one of the hardest rocking bands he ever assembled. Two of the most memorable nights of the tour occurred on March 8th and 9th, when Stills and the band took to the stage of Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. These two shows were recorded by the King Biscuit Flower Hour for this broadcast later that year. Additional material - not from the broadcast -  from those same two shows for the Stills Live album released the following year.  This FM broadcast captures night 2 in Chicago, on March 9, 1974, 4 dozen years ago today.

In 1971, in the wake of one of the first (though most certainly not the last)  CSNY break up, Stephen Stills formed Manassas, recruiting an all-star cast including Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, and Joe Lala. The band released their self- titled debut, a double album, on April 12, 1972. This soundboard recording captures Stills and Manassas on tour, just 10 days later on April 22, 1972, 48 years ago today. The album would climb to #4 on the Billboard charts in June. Ironically, Manassas would share space in the top 10 that week with Harvest from Neil Young and the self-titled debut record from Crosby & Nash. Maybe that chart success was a harbinger of the future. In yet another ironic twist, CSNY would reform in October 1973, soon after the 4 members appeared on stage together at, of all places, a Manassas concert!

In 1979, after two decades, the U.S. ban on travel to and from Cuba was lifted, creating new diplomatic and cultural exchange opportunities. Sensing the time was right, CBS Records, in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, staged an international coup by organizing an unprecedented three-night series of concerts in the Cuban capital of Havana. Dubbed "Havana Jam," this historic cultural exchange took place on March 2, 3 and 4, 1979 at the 4800-seat Karl Marx Theater and marked the first time American musicians had performed in Cuba since the Castro regime gained power two decades prior.  The King Biscuit Flower Hour accompanied a plane full of Columbia Records artists as they participated in this first comprehensive music festival held in Cuba, which featured an all-star cast of musicians from a wide range of musical genres. In addition to Cuban artists, performers included Weather Report (with Jaco Pastorius); Stephen Stills (who had been experimenting with Latin music his entire career); Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge; John McLaughlin (famed Mahavishnu Orchestra guitarist) performing a one-off trio gig with Tony Williams and Jaco Pastorius; the CBS Records Jazz Allstars, which featured a wealth of jazz greats including the Heath Brothers, Stan Getz, and Dexter Gordon, in addition to the final night headliner Billy Joel. Unfortunately Joel's set at Havana Jam was neither recorded nor videotaped. This FM broadcast captures Stephen  Stills at Havana Jam on March 3, 1979, 41 years ago today. The travel ban was reimposed 2 years later, and rock musicians would not play Cuba again until the Rolling Stones' historic show on March 25, 2016.

Concerts For The Clinton Inauguration - 1993-01-17 - Washington DC (SBD)

He was dubbed the Rock & Roll President, which later became the title of a 1997 MTV documentary about his life.  He played saxophone on the Arsenio Hall show during his campaign for the Oval Office. He used Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)" as his campaign theme song. Bill Clinton, the first baby boomer president, once thought of becoming a musician before life led him in a vastly different direction.  So, its hardly surprising that his inauguration on January 7, 1993, 27 years ago, today featured a veritable who's who of rock legends. This soundboard recording captures shows on the National Mall and at The National Building Museum celebrating the start of the Clinton presidency, featuring Bob Weir, The Band, Clarence Clmeons Stephen Still, Bob Dylan and a host of other rock legends.

The tour found Stills previewing songs such as  from the album Right By You, which would be released in 1984, alongside classics from his days withe The Buffalo Springfield and CSNY.  This soundboard recording captures Stills In Oklahoma on September 30, 1983, 35 years ago today. Stephen Stills - 1978-09-04 - Berkeley CA (FM)

The Grateful Dead had numerous connections to Stephen Stills and his band mates David Crosby, Graham Nash and Neil Young starting at Woodstock in. August 1969. CSNY played just their 2nd concert atthe iconic festival while the Dead, unfortunately, continued a tradition of not always playing their best on the biggest stages. Both bands also were scheduled to play Altamont in December of that year, but only CSNY took the stage. The Dead pulled out of the show after hearing that Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane was knocked unconscious by a member of the Hell’s Angels, who had been hired to provide security. The situation got even worse as we’ll discuss in our Rolling Stones entry later this month. In 1970, when CSNY went into the studio to record the album Déjà vu, Jerry Garcia agreed to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children. In return, CSNY helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. Both bands also had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert on November 3, 1991. As a solo artist, Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. You can find the April 16 concert posted here at So Many Roads. This soundboard recording captures Stills in Berkeley on September 4, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today. His set list includes Not Fade Away, the Buddy Holly tune which became a staple of the Dead;s live performances.

Dave Mason - 1979-06-02 - Berkeley, CA (FM)

In April 1967, Dave Mason joined Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form Traffic.  As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967, but by that time Mason had left the band. He then returned in the middle of recording their follow up disc in 1968. After the band broke up and reformed, Mason rejoined for a brief period in 1971, only to depart the band once again soon after. This FM broadcast captures Mason over 2 decades after the Summer Of Love, during the height of his success as a solo artist, on June 2, 1979, 38 years ago today. He's joined  by some very special friends, including 2 veterans from 1967, Stephen Stills and Joe Cocker. Cocker sings lead on Feeling Alright, a song originally written by Mason, and recorded by Traffic!
