Our last post this month of a concert where I was in attendance. On August 29, 1992, 34 years ago today, I went to see CSN at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, the 6th and final time I would see the trio. (I also saw CSN in 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1989, plus CSNY in 2000). At the time,  the idea of a rock band playing a casino still seemed a bit cheesy.  The thought was that artists played Vegas and AC when they were past their prime, when they had become parodies of their former selves, oldies acts playing to overweight, over served businessmen trying to relive their youth. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore,  to see that much of the audience were true fans of the band, much like myself.  CSN played a show worthy of any true rock venue, except for the moment when Graham Nash stormed off stage because the audience wouldn’t quiet down for a new song he attempted during the band’s acoustic set.  Fortunately, David Crosby jumped into the void created by his band mate’s temper tantrum and unleashed an incredible version of Almost Cut My Hair.  Download this soundboard recording of the show, and know that you won’t have to worry about losing your money in the slot machines after it’s over.

U2 - 1992-08-13 - Giants Stadium, NJ (SBD/Matrix)

I've seen U2 twice - once in August 1992 during the ZooTV tour and then again in October 2001, after the tragedy on 9-11, when the band's emotional tribute to the victims provided a much needed catharsis for us all. You can check out my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT to learn the story of the time I tried to see U2 on November 24,1981 which didn't quite worked out as planned.

Today we bring you that very first U2 show I attended and the saga that goes with it. When U2 launched its 1992 Zoo TV tour in support of its latest album, Actung Baby, they did so in grandiose fashion. In contrast to the austere stage setups from their previous tours, the Zoo TV Tour was an elaborately staged multimedia event. The stage featured dozens of large video screens that showed visual effects, random video clips, and flashing text phrases. The band incorporated live satellite link-ups, channel surfing, and crank calls, including trying to call President Bush, into each performance. Eleven cars - German made Trabants to be exact - hung from cranes over the stage. It was an incredible audio/visual cavalcade of effects designed to parody the media over exposure in a world where cable TV and the Internet reigned supreme. It truly was one of the most amazing stage shows ever created for a rock performance. Unfortunately, despite being in attendance for the U2 show at Giants Stadium on August 13, 1992, 25 years ago today as captured in this SBD Matrix recording, my only exposure to this incredible multimedia extravaganza is what I read about it. You see, our seats were to the side of the stage. In fact, they were so far to the side, that we basically saw some large support poles that held up all of the equipment!  So, if you download and listen to this soundboard matrix from that show, you'll basically have the same experience we had! You'll hear the music, but you'll need to imagine what was transpiring on stage!

Squeeze - 1992-08-09 - Joliet, IL (FM)

I've seen Squeeze on 2 occasions - in August 1981 at the South Mountain "Music Festival" - in reality, the side of a hill - and in August 1985, at Pier 84 in New York. 

Today's post goes back to 1991 when Squeeze released their 9th studio album, entitled Play. The liner notes to the album are, appropriately, in the form of a play that incorporates the lyrics of the songs in a script that also references the plays Our Town by Thornton Wilder and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.  While the album did not have much commerical success, crtical reviews were strong, with AllMusic gving the disc 4 stars, calling it "Squeeze's best post-reunion album" and naming the tracks The Truth and Walk A Straight Line as "particular highlights".  This FM broadcast captures Squueze on tour in suppprt of Play about a year after its release, in Joliet on August 9, 1992, 34 years ago today.

I've seen CSN on 6 occasions between 1978 and 1992, and then once with sometimes partner Neil Young in 2000! I've also seen Stills in 1979 solo, as well as sitting in with the Grateful Dead in 1983. In addition I saw Crosby solo in 2015. (I've also see Neil solo numerous times but that's for a post later this month).

On July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Fair in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite a venue at all. Nor was it an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. Yep, Mr. Scher, who, as mentioned in earlier posts, above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. For the full story behind why that song was so important to us, you'll have to read my book. By the way, I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concerts at Madison Square Garden, which also had CSN and the Allman Brothers on the bill!

1990s - #5: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1992, held in Texas, on March 14, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today. I saw Eddie Money live just once, in July 1979 at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. I have to admit, I didn't really pay much attention to Eddie's set as the reason I was there was for the lead-in act, Ms. Rachel Sweet. Her album, Fool Around, became a staple on the turntable (yes - it's that old!) in my college dorm room. Part new wave, part early 60's girl group in sound, the album featured songs such a B-A-B-Y, Wildwood Saloon, I Go to Pieces and Sad Song.  It's still one of my favoriye discs.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures the overlooked by me Mr. Money in San Diego on December 31, 1992, 33 years ago today.

Van Morrison - 1992-12-16 - San Francisco, CA (Ex Aud)

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. As much as my wife and I love seeing Van, however, he's lived up to Rule #7 in my book: "The Set List - The Bad News - The Band Will Never Play Everything You Want To Hear." You see, he's yet to play Someone Like You, which is our wedding song, at any of the 7 concerts we've attened. Maybe next time.

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Van in San Francisco on December 16, 1992, 33 years ago today.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1992-08-19 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

Jerry Garcia's links with CSN go all the way back to the early 1970s, though none may be more significant than their early work together during the recording of the album Déjà vu. Graham Nash asked Garcia to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children.  After one take, Nash told Garcia, "Thanks Jerry, you’re done." Despite Garcia's protests, Nash held firm, recalling that "The first one was exactly what I wanted.’ And of course, his pedal steel was one of the defining elements in that recording." In return for Garcia's help, CSN helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. David Crosby sat in on several occasions with the Dead, including 8/19/1970. 9/10/1972 and 12/31/1972. His most famous appearances with The Dead, however, are from December 1971, when he, Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart played a series of rehearsals and shows at The Matrix in San Francisco, billed as David & Dorks. Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. Both the Dead and CSN had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert, as did Neil Young on November 3, 1991.

Throughout this month as part of our tribute to Jerry Garcia, we'll post shows from numerous artists connected to the legendary guitarist.  Some of those connections wil be no brainers - think Jefferson Airplane or CSN - and others will be quite surprising.  Take Maria Muldaur, for example. She is probably best known for her 1973 debut solo album, which included the top ten hit, Midnight at The Oasis.  She got her musical start, however, in the Even Dozen Jug Band, alongside John Sebastian and David Grisman. Grisman, of course, recorded with both Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. In 1974, she opened several shows for the Grateful Dead, and was part of Jerry Garcia's Great American String Band. Four years later, she would provide backing vocals for the Jerry Garcia Band during its 1978 winter tour.  I saw my first JGB concert during that tour, on March 17, 1978!  This FM broadcast captures Muldaur in 1992, showing yet another facet of her talent, playing with the R&B pianist John "King" Cleary in Australia on August 1, 1992, 33 years ago today.

John Mellencamp - 1992-04-27 - LosAngeles, CA (SBD)

1990s - #6: While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song.  Later in 1992, John Encampment added his name to the list of rock stars appearing on Unplugged, as captured in this soundboard recording from April 27, 1992, 27 years ago today.

1990s - #3: On August 4, 1992. the Gin Blossoms released the album New Miserable Experience. which  quickly became the band's breakthrough disc. The first single released from the album, Hey Jealousy, reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to #4 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album would eventually go quadruple platinum in sales. Some of that success was overshadowed, however, by the suicide of band founder, Doug Hopkins, who had been dismissed from the group right before they made it big due to his issues with alcohol.  This soundboard recording captures the Gin Blossoms about 4 months before the release of their debut disc, on April 11, 1992, 33 years ago today, in San Francisco.

Bruce Cockburn - 1992-02-02 - Toronto, Canada (FM)

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting On A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. Then in July 1992, I saw Cokcburn lead in for Bob Weir at the Meadowlands Summerfest (a fancy name for a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium). Cockburn's set ran the gamut of his career, and he joined Bob for the encores of Spoonful and The Weight. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on his home turf in Canada about 6 months before I saw him live, on February 2, 1992, 33 years ago today.

1992: In May 1992, the Black Crowes released their 2nd studio album, entitled The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. The disc, which featured Marc Ford on guitar, replacing Jeff Cease, debuted at #1 on the Bilboard Album Charts. The album spawned the singles Remedy, Sting Me, Thorn In My Pride and Hotel Illness, all of which topped the Billboard Rock Tracks chart. Remedy and Thorn In My Pride also charted on the Billboard Hot 100. This soundboard recording captures The Black Crowes on tour in support of their second album, in Newport, on November 11, 1992, 32 years ago today.

1992: In August 1991, the Spin Doctors released their debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, but it barely received any commercial or critical notice. It took almost a year before folks picked up on the album, bolstered by MTv playing videos of Two Princes and Little Miss Can't be Wrong. Sales suddenly took off, with the album certifying gold by September 1992, and reaching triple platinum status by June 1993. The disc peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, and the 2 singles mentioned previously both cracked the top 20. By the way, the album got its title from a line from its opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, which didn't chart when originally released, but eventually cracked the Billboard Top 100 after the band's big commercial breakthrough. This soundboard recording captures the band in Cincinnati, just about the time their debut album certified gold On November 5, 1992, 32 years ago today.

Little Village - 1992-04-12 - Detroit MI (SBD)

1990s - #3: When John Hiatt recorded his breakthrough album Bring The Family in 1987, he did it in just 4 days week with the help of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. In 1992, the four reunited to record an album, calling themselves Little Village. Despite the star power, their self titled album met with little commercial or critical success. As Nick Lowe later said "Little Village was really good fun. Unfortunately, the record we did was no good. I suppose on some level, it worked, but Warner Brothers kind of gave us too much time to do it", referencing how the compressed time frame for Bring The Family had forced the foursome to be at their best! In any event, Little Village went on tour in support of the album in early 1992. This soundboard recording captures them on April 12 1992, 32 years ago today, in Detroit.
