John Mellencamp - 2023-03-21 - Sacramento, CA (IEM)

2020s - #5: In February 2023, John Mellencamp launched his Live & In Person 2023 Tour, a 76 show run that both statred and ended in his home state of Indiana. The tour was in support of 2 albums, his 2022 disc, Strictly A One Eyed Jack, and his then upcoming 2023 album, Orpheus Descending, which was released in June just as the tour came to a close. Those 2 discs were the 24th and 25th of his career. This IEM recording captures Mellencamp during the Live & In Person tour, in Sacramento on March 21, 2023, 3 years ago today.

Phil Lesh - 2023-03-15 - Portchester, NY (Webcast)

2020s - #3: On March 15, 2023, just 3 years ago today, the late, great Phil Lesh celebrated his 83rd birthday on stage at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NJ, as captured in this webcast recording. The Capitol, which was a concert hall in the early 1970s, then functioned as a broadway style theater and catering hall foor almost 4 decades before re-opening as a concert venue in 2012, has become sort of a home away from home for Phil & Friends. In fact, tonight, he'll be there again, celebrating birthday #78. Of course, Phil's connection to the venue went back to his days with the Grateful Dead, who played 17 shows at the Capitol between March 1970 and February 1971. Jerry Garcia loved the venue, once proclaiming that "there’s only two theaters, man… that are set up pretty groovy all around for music and for smooth stage changes, good lighting and all that – the Fillmore and The Capitol Theatre. And those are the only two in the whole country.” Little wonder then that the lobby bar at the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's. In any event, this would be Phil's next to last birthday celebration at the venue.  He would return again in 2024, just 7 months prior to his passing in Octiber that year.

U2 - 2023-12-15 - Las Vegas, NV (IEM Matrix)

I've seen U2 twice - once in August 1992 during the ZooTV tour and then again in October 2001, after the tragedy on 9-11, when the band's emotional tribute to the victims provided a much needed catharsis for us all. You can check out my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT to learn the story of the time I tried to see U2 on November 24, 1981 at a club called Hitsville which didn't quite work out as planned.

This IEM Matrix recording captures U2 just 2 years ago today, on December 15, 2023, at the then brand new Sphere venue in Las Vegas. They were became the first band to play at Sphere, an innovative 18,000 seat arena located at the Venetian Hotel. Other bands to follow in U2's footsteps included Dead & Company and The Eagles. Sphere, per Wikipedia "is being marketed for its immersive video and audio capabilities, which include a 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen, speakers with beamforming and wave field synthesis technologies, and 4D physical effects. The venue's exterior also features 580,000 sq ft of LED displays. Sphere measures 366 feet  high and 516 feet. The arena cost $2.3 billion, making it the most expensive entertainment venue built in the Las Vegas Valley."

2020s -#4: In early November 2023, music lovers in the town of Ridgefield, CT had a mystey on their hands.  The Ridgefield Playhouse had posted on line that on November 10, they would post details about a special, member only concert taht would take place just 5 days later.  All the venue would say leading up to the announcemnet was that the ticket price would be a bit higher norma. and that they would limit the number of tickets to four per member. Little wonder the theater tried to keep the event as secret as possible - turned out that their 500 seat venue woulkd be hosting the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who just a few weeks earlier had sold out all 20,000 seats at Madison Square Garden!  This excellent audience recording captures that intimate performance, on November 15, 2023, just 2 years ago today.

Paul McCartney - 2023-11-14 - Mexico City, Mexico (SBD)

2020s - #3: In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic. The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then, in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This soundboard recording captures McCartney in Mexcico onNoevmber 14, 2023, just 2 years ago today. By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

2023 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2023-11-03 - Brooklyn, NY (TV SBD)

2020s - #2: The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony continued to see the institution widen its net beyond classic rock, with inductees such as country legend Willie Nelson, and hip hop star Missy Elliot. The Hall also recognized lyricist Bernie Taupin, whose work with Elton John produced countless hit tunes, and TV host Don Cornelius, who created Soul Train, perhaps the first show to specifically focus on African American culture, music and dance.  Sheryl Crow was all over the ceremony, playing 3 of her tunes, with guest appearances by Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks and Peter Frampton, joining Willie Nelson for Crazy, and taking a verse of The Weight during the tribute to Robbie Robertson.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on November 3, 2023, 2 years ago today. A complete list of inductees is provided below.

2020s - #4: He has had number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic, selling over 100 million records. He has hosted 2 TV variety series, one in the 1970's and another in the 1980's. He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, country, techno, soul, gospel and show tunes. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. On top of that, he has played  at the most famous venues in the world, such a sthe Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, as captured in this excellent audience recording from May 15, 2023, just 2 years ago today! He is Tom Jones, and even after 60 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience.

Paul McCartney - 2023-12-16 - Rio de Janiero, Brazil (Webcast)

In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic.  The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then,  in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This webcast recording captures McCartney on the final night in South America, in Brazil on December 16, 2023, just a year ago today.  By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

Peter Frampton - 2023-08-12 - Lincoln, CA (IEM Aud Matrix)

For Peter Frampton, the year 1969 marked the start of his long, storied career.  At just 18 years old, he joined Steve Marriott, formerly of the Small Faces, to form Humble Pie.  The band released their first album, As Safe As Yesterday Is, in August 1969. The disc went to #26 on the UK charts, with the single, Natural Born Bugie, climbing to #4.  The band would't tour the US until November, 3 months after Woodstock.

This IEM audience matrix recording captures Frampton 54 years after hsi debut with Humble Pie, and the Woodtsock Festival, in Lincoln on August 12, 2023, a year ago today.  That Frampton is still playing live at this point is a bit of a miracle.  He was diagnosed in 2019 with inclusion body myositis (IBM), a progressive muscle disorder characterised by muscle inflammation, weakness, and atrophy. He originally believed his 2019 tour would be his last due to the disease, which forces him to stay seated during concerts. Fortunateley, he continues to be healthy, and optimistic, naming the 2023 tour that this show is from Never Say Never!

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2023-07-28 - Morrison, CO (webcast)

TTB 2023 - Back To Back - #1: In 2022, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released their 5th studio album, I Am the Moon, The disc was a quadruple album which was initially released in four separate parts over consecutive full moons: Crescent on June 3, Ascension on July 1, The Fall on July 29,  and Farewell on August 26. The album is based on the tale of the star crossed lovers Layla and Majnun, which is hardly surprising given the the lifetime of links both Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks have to the Derek & The Domninos legendary Layla album (see this post for more details on that subject). This webcast recording captures the Tedeschi Trucks Band on tour in support of I Am The Moon at Red Rocks on July 28, 2023, just 1 year ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.
