Rolling Stones - 2018-06-05 - Manchester, UK (IEM Matix)

I've only seen the Stones once, in October 1989 at Shea Stadium, during their Steel Wheels tour, which is fine, since one near death expereince per life time is more than enough. You can read more about that show and why I'm thankful to be still be walking this earth in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT. 

In any event, this IEM Matrix recording captures the Stones in Manchester on June 5, 2018, 8 years ago today during their No Filter tour. The tour had launched on September 9, 2017 in Hamburg, the first of a 14 show run in Europe. A second European leg of the tour was launched in May 2018. The Stones then announced a North American leg of the tour which was originally scheduled to begin in April 2019. When Mick Jagger required a heart valve replacement, those dates were all postponed by about 2 months. I'm still amazed that he only needed 60 days to be back up performing after such a serious surgery.

Rolling Stones - 1976-05-22 - London, UK (SBD)

On April 23, 1976, The Rolling Stones released Black & Blue, their first studio album in 2 years. The disc had originally been intended for release in 1975 prior to the Stone’s tour of North America, but was delayed as the band auditioned a variety of guitarists to take the place of Mick Taylor. The candidates included Steve Marriott, Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, and even Peter Frampton, but in the end, The Stones chose Ronnie Wood. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and took the #2 spot in the UK. The first single from Black & Blue, Fool To Cry, climbed to #10 on the Billboard charts. Critical reviews were mixed, however, as Robert Christgau gave the record an A-, but Lester Bangs claimed that Black and Blue was “the first meaningless Rolling Stones album.” The band launched a European tour on April 28 in support of the disc, playing 41 shows in 2 months. This soundboard recording captures the Stones in London, on May 22, 1976, 5 decades ago today.  Billy Preston sits in with them for two of his songs, Nothing From Nothing and Outta Space.

Rolling Stones - 1999-04-20 - San Jose, CA (SBD) 

The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989, a class that also featured the star power of the Stevie Wonder, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion. They perfomed Satisfaction with some help from Bruce Springsteen and Honky Tonk Women with an assist from Tina Turner. 

This soundboard recording captures the Stones in San Jose on April 20, 1999, 27 years ago today on tour in support of the albums, Bridges To Babylon and No Security. Bridges To Babylon, which had been released on September 29, 1997 was the band's last studio album of the 20th century. While the disc met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. The band followed that up in 1999 with the No Security tour, in support of the album of the same name, a live disc featuring songs from the Bridges to Babylon run. The No Security tour launched on January 26, 1999 and would feature 43 shows, all is arenas seating 20,000 or less.

To support the album, the Stones launched a massive world wide tour, that started at Fenway Park, and included a performance at the Super Bowl in February 2006. The tour continued for another 18 months, covering South America, Asia, several return trips to North America and finally ending in Europe in August 2007, 2 years after it began. The Stones set a record by grossing over $558 million for the 147 shows they performed. It truly was a Bigger Bang, especially for the bucks! This soundboard captures the band on March 29, 2006, 20 years ago today, in Sapporo, Japan, about 9 months into the tour.

2010s - #2: In 2013, the Rolling Stones launched their 50 And Counting Tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. They clearly weren’t kidding about the “and counting part” as on February 21, 2014, just one year ago today, they launched the 14 on Fire tour in Abu Daabi. The tour would travel to Asia, Europe and Australia after the opening concert, encompassing a total of 28 additional shows before coming to a close in November. This IEM Matrix recording captures night 2 of the 14 On Fire tour, in Tokyo, on March 4, 2014, a dozen years ago today.

Stones 1990 - Back To Back - #1: On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990. As I've noted several times on this blog, it was hard to concentrate on the music as the upper deck swayed uncontrollably throughout the show, leaving us convinced it was going to crash down into the levels below it at any moment! That the stadium stood for another 20 years before they tore it down is a miracle. 

Iny event, this soundboard recording recording captures the Stones in Lexington on December 11, 1981, 44 years ago today. Soundboards from that tour abound as the band taped every show in anticipation of releasing a live album and a concert film. In fact, perhaps more than any previous tour in rock history to that point, the Stones’ 1981 venture was about maximizing profits. The Stone’s became the first band to have a corporate sponsor for a tour. Jovan paid the band $1 million to advertise on every ticket printed. In addition, a show a few days later in Hampton on December 18, 1981, became the first concert ever broadcast on pay per view. To borrow from Frank Zappa, the tour could have been subtitled “we’re only in it for the money”.

Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto, also known as SARSStock, was a benefit rock concert held in Toronto on July 30, 2003, 22 years ago today.  An estimated 450,000 and 500,000 people attended the festival, making it is the largest outdoor ticketed event in Canadian history and one of the largest events ever held in North America. The festival was organized in about a month, at the suggestion of headliners the Rolling Stones, who wanted to help revive Toronto's economy after the SARS outbreaks earlier in the year. The concert opened in the afternoon with the Have Love Will Travel Revue, featuring Dan Aykroyd and James Belushi, Sam Roberts, Kathleen Edwards, La Chicane, The Tea Party, The Flaming Lips, Sass Jordan, The Isley Brothers, and Blue Rodeo. Each band performed for 15–20 minutes. The second part of the festival began later in the afternoon and featured Justin Timberlake, The Guess Who, Rush, and AC/DC. The Stones brought the day to a close, as captured in thos soundboard recording.

Rolling Stones - 1969-07-05 - Hyde Park Festival, London, UK (SBD)

On July 3, 1969, Brian Jones was found unconscious at the bottom of a swimming pool at his home. By the time doctors arrived, it was too late, he was dead, the first of many 1960’s rock icons to die way too young. Brian was 27, the same age as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan were when they were to die in the next few years. Perhaps those around him should have seen that the end was near. Brian had been abusing drugs for years, causing his health to fail and rendering him unable to contribute to the Stones’ recent albums. He was at odds with Jagger and Richards over the band’s future direction, wanting to remain more blues focused. Those twin issues fueled each other, causing Brian to spin out of control and resulting in his being asked to leave the Rolling Stones on June 8, 1969. His life ended less than a month later. Two days after his death, the Rolling Stones played an outdoor festival in Hyde Park in London. Also on the bill were Third Ear Band, King Crimson, Screw, Alexis Korner's New Church, Family, and The Battered Ornaments The show had been scheduled weeks earlier, so the Stones decided to keep the date and turn it into a tribute to their former guitarist. Before the Rolling Stones' set, Jagger read excerpts from Adonais, a poem by Percy Shelly about the death of his friend, John Keats. Stagehands released hundreds of white butterflies as part of the tribute. The band opened with a song by Johnny Winter, I'm Yours and I'm Hers, that was one of Jones' favorites. This soundboard captures that historic set from July 5, 1969, 56 years ago today.

Two years before The Who celebrated their 50th anniversary by headling Glastonbury, the Sones did likewise on June 29, 2013, a dozen years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording.  Their set at Glastonbury kicked off the European leg of their "50 & counting" tour.  Incredibly, it was the first appearance ever by the Stones at Glastonbury.  Almost as incredibly, the Stones, like The Who, are still touring even as I type!

Rolling Stones - 1965-04 18 - Paris, France (SBD)

1960s - #3: In April 1965, the Rolling Stones played 3 shows in Paris as a warm up for the first North American tour, which would launch less than a week later. This soundboard recording captures the last of the 3 nights, on April 18, 1965, 60 years ago this very day. While touring the US and Canada was a huge step for the band, it was not the only major event that would transpire in the Spring of 1965.  They would release the  tune Satisfaction, in May which would become their first number #1 single in the US.  The Stones would follow that with Get Off Of My Cloud, which also hit in top spot in September. The band was now relying less on covers of R&B tunes and more on the song writing of Jagger and Richards. In fact, their next album, Aftermath, recorded in December 1965, would be their first that featured only compositions by the Glimmer Twins.

On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990.  This soundboard recording captures them in Tokyo, on February 24, 1990, 35 years ago today.

On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first studio disc in over 3 years. The disc also marked a reconciliation between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who had been at odds over the future of the band. The album received strong critical reviews and climbed to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US and to #2 in the UK. The single Mixed Emotions, which addressed the woes between Mick and Keith, went to #5 on the Billboard charts. On August 31, the Stones launched a tour in support of the album, which would take them to the US for the first time in 7 years. The tour would eventually stretch to 115 dates on 3 continents. This soundboard recording captures the Stones during that tour, in Montreal, on December 13, 1989, 35 years ago today.

Rolling Stones - 1997-11-01 - Fort Worth, TX (SBD)

1997: On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long worldwide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. The Stones also introduced the use of a 2nd stage, called the B-stage, during this tour. Most nights, 3 songs were played from the B-Stage, before the band returned to the main stage to close the show. This soundboard recording captures the Stones during that tour in Fort Worth on November 1, 1997, 27 years ago today,

2010s - #7: In 2013, the Rolling Stones launched their 50 And Counting Tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. They clearly weren’t kidding about the “and counting part” as on February 21, 2014, just one year ago today, they launched the 14 on Fire tour in Abu Daabi. The tour would travel to Asia, Europe and Australia after the opening concert, encompassing a total of 28 additional shows before coming to a close in November. This IEM recording captures night 2 of the Australia leg of the tour, in Perth on October 29, 2014, a decade ago today.  Of note, the Stones get some help from former band mate Mick Taylor on 2 tunes.

Rolling Stones - 2019-08-26 - Phoenix AZ (IEM)

Festival organizers invited the Rolling Stones to play Woodstock, but the band declined. At the time, Mick Jagger was in Australia filling the movie, Ned Kelly, while Keith Richards was staying to close to home with then girlfriend Anita Pallenberg, who had just given birth to their son, Marlon. 

This IEM recording captures The Stones a half century after Woodstock, in Phoenix on August 26, 2019, 5 years ago today. The 2019 tour woulkd be the last with Charlie Watts on drums, as he would pass away just about 2 years later, on August 24, 2021.
