Eric Clapton - 1981-01-31 - Dublin, Ireland (SBD) 

1980s - #5: In January 1981, Eric Clapton launched the Another Ticket tour, named after the album he would release in February. This soundboard recording captures the opening night of the tour, in Ireland on January 31, 1983, 35 years ago today. Surprisingly, the set list contains only 1 tune from that new disc, Blow Wind Blow. Perhaps the lack of new materiel was symbolic of the trouble EC was experiencing at the time,  He would launch a US tour in March, but play only 8 shows before cancelling the rest of the dates.  By year's end, Clapton would finally admit he was an an alcoholic, fIn early 1982,  he would fly from London to Minneapolis to check into the Hazelden Treatment Center. On the flight, Clapton drank heavily out of fear he would never be able to drink again. Clapton is quoted in his autobiography as saying, "In the lowest moments of my life, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was that I knew I wouldn't be able to drink any more if I was dead. It was the only thing I thought was worth living for, and the idea that people were about to try and remove me from alcohol was so terrible that I drank and drank and drank, and they had to practically carry me into the clinic.” EC would be discharged later that year, finally sober, and return to recording and touring in 1983.

1990s - #5: While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. This soundboard recording captures the outtakes from the legendary appearance by Sir Paul, on January 26, 1991. 27 years ago today.

1990s - #3:  On November 29 1994, Nick Lowe released the album The Impossible Bird, which marked yet another reinvention of himself as an artist.  According to reviews, the album  "has a lot more to do with 1956 country music than with 1978 punk."  That's hardly surprising for a man who quoted as saying his greatest fear in recent years was "sticking with what you did when you were famous."  This FM broadcast captures Lowe promoting his then new disc on the shoow Fresh Air, on Janaury 24, 1995, 23 years ago today.

2010s - #2: Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. 1970s - #5:  On April 15, 1972, WMMR-FM in Philadelphia helped make a New York native a household name.  By the end of their broadcast of a a live performance from Sigma Studios folks who had never heard of Billy Joel suddenly knew who he was. Moreover,  as Joel’s version of Captain Jack from the broadcast began to get significant air play on WMMR; word spread not just in Philly, but up and down the east coast about the Piano Man. This FM broadcast captures Joel on the West Coast about 3 month prior to that legendary Sigma Studios show, on January 22, 1972, 46 years ago today. And yes, Captain Jack, the tune that helped make him a star, is included in the set list.

2000s - #3: As the first decade of the 21st century came to a close, Elton John continued to remain a vibrant force in the music industry. In 2006, he released The Captain and The Kid, a new studio album which was the follow up to his 1975 number one album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.  The next year, he released Rocket Man: Definitive Hits, a 17 song compilation that included 13 number one songs. He continued to perform his Red Piano shows in Las Vegas, extending the initial 3 year run for another 3 years, as well as taking the performance to Europe.  From 2006 to 2008, Elton played over 300 concerts, including solo shows, concerts with his full band, and his Red Piano gig.  After closing 2008 with a New Year's Eve show at Wembley, he was on the road again just 2 weeks later, in South America, for the first of what would be 85 concerts in 2009.  He launched his 2009 tour in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on January 17, 2009, 9 years ago today.  This FM recording of the show captures the complete concert, all 24 tunes, unlike some bootlegs of the show which have only 17 of songs. Of note, the next to last song of the night is Skyline Pigeon, a tune from his first album which was released almost 40 years earlier!

Jim Croce - 1973-01-15 - Glassboro, NJ (SBD)

1970s - #3: In April 1972, Jim Croce released his first solo album on ABC records, entitled You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. Featuring tracks such as New York’s Not My Home, Photographs and Memories, Operator, and Time in A Bottle, the album showcased Croce’s songwriting talent and unique folk rock style. The title track, telling the tale of tough guy Big Jim Walker, features the memorable lyrics, "You don't tug on Superman's cape/You don't spit into the wind/You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger/And you don't mess around with Jim.” The song rose to #8 on the Billboard charts, putting Jim Croce on the musical map. Croce’s next album, Life and Times, would be released a year later, in July 1973, and would feature another song with a legendary character, the only and only Bad Bad Leroy Brown. That tune would go to #1 on the charts, and the future appeared to be unlimited for Croce. Tragically, just 2 months later, on September 20, 1973, the music world lost Jim Croce in a plane crash. In the wake of his death, his third album, I’ve Got A Name, which he completed just a week before his death, would reach the #2 position on the charts. In addition, the single Time in A Bottle, from his first album, was re-released, and became just the 3rd posthumous chart-topping song of the rock era following Otis Redding's (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay and Janis Joplin's recording of Me and Bobby McGee. This soundboard recording captures Croce on January 15, 1973, 45 years ago today, right between the release of his first 2 albums. Download this one and take a moment to remember a great singer songwriter who was taken from us way too soon.

Pat Benatar - 1980-01-14 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL (FM)

1980s - #4: When Pat Benatar played in Ft. Lauderdale on January 14, 1980, 38 years ago today, her single Heartbreaker, released in December 1979, was rising up the Billboard charts. WSHE-FM in Ft. Lauderdale took the opportunity, therefore, to broadcast the rising star's concert from The Rendezvous that January night. neither the station nor Benatar, however, could have been prepared for what would happen. Three songs into the show, the building had to be cleared due to a bomb threat. The surreal and scary scene is described live by the WSHE on air hosts.  After a lengthy delay, police declared the building was secure and let the crowd back in to the club. WSHE picked up the broadcast and Benatar finished the show. Seems like a bomb scare was about the only thing that could stop Ms. Benatar, as she would go on to win 4 consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, from 1980 to 1983

Ringo Starr  - 2010-01-14 - New York , NY (SBD)

2010s - #1:  In 1989, Ringo launched the first version of his All Starr Band tour, an ensemble where, as Ringo put it it, "everybody on stage is a star in their own right". While Ringo headlined these tours, singing his Beatles and solo material, his supporting band consisted of major players in the rock world, who would perform their own tunes, often with Ringo on drums.  This soundboard recording from January 14, 2010, 8 years ago today, however, finds Ringo backed not by his contemporaries, but by a artists 30 years younger than he is, Ben Harper & The Restless Seven.  Ths show was part of the Artist Den Series, with Ringo promoting his then new album, Y Not.

John Fogerty - 1993-01-12 - Los Angeles CA (SBD)

1990s - #2: The induction of Creedence Clearwater Revival into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on January 12, 1993, 25 years ago today, produced one of the most infamous moments in that' institution's history. While John Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford all took the stage together to accept their induction into the Hall, Fogerty refused to take the stage and play with his former band mates. Instead, as captured in this soundboard recording he played 4 CCR tunes with the help of Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.  As indicated in this article from Rolling Stone, Fogerty believed Cook and Clifford had betrayed him by selling their rights in CCR to Saul Zaentz.  Zaentz owned Fantasy Records and sued Fogerty for copy write infringement, claiming he had plagiarized the tune Run Through The Jungle, when he wrote Old Man Down The Road.Needless to say, it was an awkward moment for all involved, and cast a shadow over the enire proceedings.

1980s - #3:  The year 1982 was one of the few between 1977 and 1995 when I didn't see either the Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia in concert. I was busy getting my MBA and unfortunately, music took a back seat to my studies. As a result, I really didn't have a good sense as to how well the band was playing that year until a few good friends - Wolfclan and AZ Jones - got me hooked on several shows from 1982.  The more I dug into the 1982 shows, the more I realized that the Dead and Jerry were at the top of their game that year.  This soundboard recording January 11, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today, from the Old Waldorf in San Francisco the the perfect introduction to a very under rated year in the long strange trip of the Jerry Garcia Band.  By the way, the set list contains one of my favorite cover tunes - Jerry doing his version of Smokey' Robinson's classic, Second That Emotion!

Grateful Dead - 1978-01-10 - Los Angeles CA (SBD)

1970s - #2: Well, its my birthday, so what else would I bring you but some good old Grateful Dead.  Now, in the lore of the Grateful Dead, 1978 has always been a year that receives mixed reviews. As regular readers of this blog know, 1977 was THE YEAR for the Dead with a run of shows that may be unmatched in the band’s history. So, 1978 has always founds itself in the “tough act to follow” position. In truth, the Dead’s playing in 1978 wasn’t quite at the same level as the prior year. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. My own Dead experiences from 1978 reflect the same dichotomy. On the one hand, I saw them on May 10 and 11 in New Haven and Springfield, 2 shows that were so good they were officially released as Dick’s Picks Volume 25. On the other hand, I attended their September 2 performance at Giants Stadium, the last show before they headed to Egypt, and the band was clearly not firing on all cylinders. That said, when the Dead were good in 1978, they were very good, maybe as good as they were in 1977. This soundboard recording from January 10, 1978, 34 decades ago this very day, captures the band on one of those exceptional nights at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. While Jerry Garcia was battling a case of laryngitis, that didn’t stop him from playing inspired solos and driving the band through incredible versions of He'S gone, The Other One and Franklin's Tower. Hot Tuna -2005-01-08 - Boulder, CO (SBD)

2000s - #2:  As 2005, began, Hot Tuna wasted n time hitting the road, playing their first show of the year on January 7 in Aspen, Colorado.  The next night, January 8, 2005, 13 years ago today, they were in the same state, different city, playing a show in Boulder at the Fox Theater, as captured in this soundboard recording. Each show of this tour consisted of  sets, an opening acoustic one, where Jack and Jorma were joined by Barry Mitterhoff  on mandolin, and a closing electric one, where he trio became a quartet with the addition of Eric Diaz on drums.  So whatever way you like your Tuna served, this show is bound to satisfy you!

Frank Sinatra - 1983-01-07 - Las Vegas, NV (EX Aud)

1980S - #2: For Frank Sinatra, the year 1983 was the best of times and the worst of times. Early in the year, In he was selected as one of the five recipients of the 1983 Kennedy Center Honors, alongside Katherine Dunham, James Stewart, Elia Kazan, and Virgil Thomson. Quoting Henry James, President Reagan said in honoring his old friend that "art was the shadow of humanity" and that Sinatra had "spent his life casting a magnificent and powerful shadow."  Later that year, however, author Kitty Kelley said some less faltering things about Sinatra in her unofficial biography of the singer, entitled His Way. In fact, on September 21, 1983, Sinatra filed a $2 million court case against Kitty Kelley, suing her in punitive damages, before the book was even published. The book became a best-seller for "all the wrong reasons" and "the most eye-opening celebrity biography of our time", according to William Safire of The New York Times. Sinatra eventually dropped the case, but his rage at and the campaign against the book took a toll on his health.  This Excellent audience recording captures FranK early in that tumultuous year, in Las Vegas on January 7, 1983, 35  years ago today.

1990s -#1:  In late 1991, John Mellencamp rel;eased the album Whenever We Wantedm the first disc of his carrer to drop the "Cougar" from his name.  The album went to #17 on the Billboard charts and spawned 4 top 40 hits, Get a Leg Up and Again Tonight  Cougar launched a world tour in 1992 in support of the album kicking it off with a rehearsal show in Bloomington, in his home state of Indiana,on January 6, 1992, 26 years ago, that was broadcast live on FM radio.

Jimi Hendrix - 1970-01-01 - Fillmore East NY (SBD) 

1970s - #1: Soon after his performance at Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix formed The Band of Gypsies, a new group featuring Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. Some thought that the creation of the all black group was an effort by Hendrix to appease the Black Power movement, which was pressuring him to become more militant in using his fame to speak up for civil rights. Others simply felt it was a necessary business move, as Hendrix was contractually bound to produce an album for producer Ed Chalpin in order to resolve a legal dispute. Still others felt it was another musical experiment for Jimi, as working with Miles created a fusion of jazz and rock which had never before been seen. Whatever the reasons behind Hendrix's decision, he, Cox and Miles rehearsed new material that they debuted at a series of 4 concerts at the Fillmore East. This soundboard recording captures the last of those 4 shows, the late show from January 1, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today. Less than a month later, the experiment known as The Band of Gypsies came to an abrupt end when Hendrix walked off stage at a concert at Madison Square Garden. Their set had been delayed until 3 am, and Hendrix clearly was in no shape to play. The Band of Gypsies was no more, but Jimi would reform the Experience (with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding) to play a series of concerts in spring and summer of 1970, his last tour before his death on September 18, 1970.
