Bruce Springsteen - 2003-08-31 - Giants Stadium, NJ (IEM Matrix)

In summer of 2003, Bruce Springsteen played 10 sold out shows at Giants Stadium in his home state of NJ, Today, we have an IEM Matrix recording of the last of those 10 concerts, from August 31, 2003, 15 years ago today. I went to this one with my wife, my sister and my brother in law, and was just plain lucky to get tickets. I was checking on line at Ticketmaster for tickets to a local play for my kids, when I saw Bruce tickets go in sale for the 9th night. Rather than buy those, I took a chance that 10 nights sounded better than 9.  So I waited about and hour,  then checked back. Lo and behold, my gamble paid off, as they did put tickets on sale for one final show. I scooped up 4 and the rest is history. Bruce rose to the occasion that August 31 evening, opening with Cynthia, a song familiar to only the most die hard fans of the Boss. He played stellar versions of Because The Night, Lucky Town, Spirit in the Night, Lost in the Flood and Badlands. New songs from the Rising, including the title track, Into The Fire and My City of Ruins, resonated with a crowd less than 2 years removed from the tragedy of 9-11. The show preceding the encores was so strong that the last few tunes – classics like Born to Run and Rosalita – almost seemed anti-climatic. I said almost! The final encore was an eagerly anticipated and much appreciated version of Jersey Girl, a most appropriate tune to bring the entire Giants Stadium run to a close.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2012-08-30 - Morrison, CO (SBD)

Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011.  Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012, that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track.  This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that album on August 30, 2012, 6 years ago today. Requests For Reposts: A Reminder

While I fully understand folks wanting the music (if they didn't this blog wouldn't have lasted almost 9 years), as I have mentioned several times in the past, I simply do not have the time to handle requests for 10 or 12 shows from a single person. Ask for one or two shows, and I'l be glad o help.  But mass requests are simply going to be deleted and ignored.

Just a reminder - here's our policy on re-posts:  

• If there's a show you would like me to re-post, and you ask using common courtesy, I'll do my best to get to it in 48 to 72 hours. 
• If you are asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. Just not enough time in the day and I do have a wife, kids, job, etc.
• If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response
• Also, I will no longer take re-post requests from Anonymous users. Most of the time, the issues outlined above are caused by folks who are Anonymous, so unless you have some kind of identity (such as Speedy, or Wolfclan or AZ Jones, or PigStreet, etc), I won't be honoring the request. Having an identify enables me to determine who is a frequent visitor to So Many Roads and such folks will get priority when it comes to requests for reposts! 

I know that these policies may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything. Thanks for understanding.

The Band - 1983-08-29 - Osaka, Japan (SBD)

In June 1983, some 6 ½ years after the Last Waltz, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of the original group did, as Robbie Robertson choose to follow his own path. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel played a series of small clubs in the summer of 1983, then played 6 dates in Japan in late August/early September. This soundboard recording captures them during that tuur in the land of the Rising Sun, on August 29, 1983, 35 years ago today.

Greg Kihn - 1981-08-28 - Reseda, CA (FM) 

When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, and Nick Lowe, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new artist became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn was sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. As promised, here’s part 2 of our August double shot of Greg Kihn from 1981. The early 1990s were a time of transition for the late, great, Warren Zevon. He was dropped from the Virgin Records label in late 1989, after the commercial failure of the album Transverse City. He caught on with Giant records, and released the album Hindu Love Gods in later 1990, featuring a cover of Priince's Raspberry beret. he then set to work on the album, Mr Bad Example, which would be released in late 1991, and feature the songs Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead and Searching For A Heart. This soundboard recording captures Zevon on tour before his first 2 releases on Giant, in Minneapolis on August 27, 1990, 28 years ago today.

Dion made a name for himself in the late 1950’s and early 1960s, with such tunes as Runaround Sue and The Wanderer. In the late 1960s, he made headlines with the tune Abraham, Martin and John. He has been cited as influence by some of the biggest name s in rock. For example, The Beatles selected him as one of only 2 rock artists to appear on the cover of the Sgt Pepper album, the other being Bob Dylan. Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and Lou Reed all credited Dion with influencing their musical style. This high quality recording captures Dion at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park on August 26, 1989, 29 years ago today. That was the same year, by the way, that he achieved rock’s highest honor, being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,

Johnny Cash - 1990-08-25 - Cumberland, MD (FM) 

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Johnny Cash had his career rejuvenated as he gained popularity with an audience which was not traditionally considered interested in country music. For example, in 1988, British post-punk musicians Marc Riley (formerly of the Fall) and Jon Langford (the Mekons) put together 'Til Things Are Brighter, a tribute album featuring mostly British-based indie-rock acts' interpretations of Cash's songs. Cash was enthusiastic about the project, telling Langford that it was a "morale booster": Roseanne Cash later said "he felt a real connection with those musicians and very validated... It was very good for him: he was in his element. He absolutely understood what they were tapping into, and loved it". The album attracted press attention on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1991, he sang a version of "Man in Black" for the Christian punk band One Bad Pig's album I Scream Sunday. In 1993, he sang "The Wanderer" on U2's album Zooropa which was the closing track. According to Rolling Stone writer, Adam Gold,"The Wanderer" – written for Cash by Bono, "defies both the U2 and Cash canons, combining rhythmic and textural elements of Nineties synth-pop with a Countrypolitan lament fit for the closing credits of a Seventies western.". The Who - 2000-08-24 - Denver CO (SBD)

After playing 7 shows in late 1999 that higlighted material from Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, the band decided to embark on a full scale tour in 2000. By the way, the Lifehouse project was originally intended as a rock opera that would follow Tommy, but instead morphed into Who’s Next, one of the greatest albums in rock history. That said, Townshend continually revisited material from the Lifehouse project throughout his career, including durimg the 1999-2000 tours. In addition to original members Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the band included Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The Who played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This soundboard recording captures the band in Denver on August 24, 2000, 18 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1998-08-23 - Toronto, Canada (HQ Aud) 

As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career.  The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy.  Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This high qualirt audience recording captures the band in Philadelphia on August 23, 1998, 2 decades ago today. BTW -  a big thanks to my good friend AZ Jones for the artwork!

In summer of 1987, the movie La Bamba was released, telling the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time; One Time, One Night; River of Fools; Tears Of God and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should. This excellent audience recording captures Los Lobos in New York on August 22, 1987, 31 years ago today, just as La Bamba was topping the charts.

On March 9th, 1993, Sting released Ten Summoner’s Tales, his 4th solo album since the breakup of the Police in 1987. The album title is a pun on his real surname (Sumner). The album went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This FM broadcast captures Sting in Germany on August 21, 1993, a quarter of a century ago today, during the early stages of that tour. Pink Floyd - 1988-08-20 - Nassau Coliseum, NY (SBD)

Pink Floyd's 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of reason, was the band's first without long time member Roger Waters. The recording of the album was marked by ongoing legal battles between David Glimour and Waters over the rights to the name "Pink Floyd". In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the band's fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went worldwide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. Hall & Oates - 1980-08-19 - Boston, MA (FM) 

Believe it or not, the 2nd concert I ever attended was Hall & Oates on June 23, 1977 at the Garden State (now the PNC Bank) Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band at the start of that run of commercial success, on August 19, 1980, 38 years ago today, in Pittsburgh.

Neil Diamond - 2012-08-18 - Los Angeles, CA (HQ Aud)

In early 1972, Neil Diamond scored his 2nd #1 single when Song Sung Blue climbed to the top of the charts (his first had been Crackin' Rosie in 1970).  In August that year, he played 10 sold out shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.  The August 24 show from that run was released as the double live album, Hot August Night, which went double platinum and climbed to #5 on the Billboard charts. The album would become the stuff of legends, and cemented Diamond's legacy.  Four decades later, he returned to the Greek for 2 August concerts which due to ticket demand, quickly grew to 5 sold out shows.  Diamond clearly understood the importance of this run, as documented by Steve Baltin of The Hollywood Reporter: “Forty years ago it made my day, made my year, made my professional life, the Greek Theatre did,” Diamond said of the album that changed his career. Indeed, the impact of the venue was foremost on Diamond’s mind and he seemed visibly moved when, during the intro to “Cherry, Cherry,” he had the house lights turned all the way up to “take in” the crowd. “I love you,” he said to the screaming masses. “This is a beautiful sight for me”.  This excellent audience recording captures Diamond during "Hot August Night 2012", capturing the August 18, 2012 show, from 6 years ago today, in its entirety. As musical events such as the British Invasion (1964), Monterrey Pop (1967) and Woodstock (1969) celebrated or approached their 20th birthday, many of the rock legends connected to those moments were, or seamed on the verge of becoming, simply entries in the history books. For example, The Beatles were long gone, John Lennon had tragically died, and Paul McCartney hadn’t toured since 1976. The Stones were on hiatus, with Mick and Keith feuding. Led Zeppelin had broken up with the death of John Bonham, The Who had retired (temporarily) and Roger Waters and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd were in court fighting over ownership of the band’s name. So, when Santana celebrated their 20th anniversary with a concert on August 17, 1986, 32 years ago today, it was a testament to their ability to survive in a world where tragic deaths, burnout, and creative differences had torn apart even the even the upper crust of rock royalty. This soundboard recording captures the entire 20th anniversary concert, which turned out to be not even the halfway point of the band’s illustrious career.

When U2 launched its 1992 Zoo TV tour in support of its latest album, Actung Baby, they did so in grandiose fashion. In contrast to the austere stage setups from their previous tours, the Zoo TV Tour was an elaborately staged multimedia event. The stage featured dozens of large video screens that showed visual effects, random video clips, and flashing text phrases. The band incorporated live satellite link-ups, channel surfing, and crank calls, including trying to call President Bush, into each performance. Eleven cars - German made Trabants to be exact - hung from cranes over the stage. It was an incredible audio/visual cavalcade of effects designed to parody the media over exposure in a world where cable TV and the Internet reigned supreme. It truly was one of the most amazing stage shows ever created for a rock performance. This soundboard recording catches the band on August 16, 1992, 26 years ago today in Washington DC. As you listen, you’ll just have to imagine what was transpiring on stage!

The Police - 1983-08-15 - Norfolk, VA (SBD)

By 1983, many of the punk/new wave bands from the late 1970s were gaining mainstream acceptance. For example,  Joe Jackson headlined the Rockpalst in June 1983, on the heels of the success of the single, Stepping Out. Also in 1983, U2 released their 3rd album War, which took them from new wave dance phenomenon to politically charged rockers. The disc went to #12 on the charts in the US, and became the band’s first #1 album in the UK. No new wave band, however, climbed as high as The Police. The band had scored a #2 album with Ghost In The Machine in 1981, and the subsequent tour in support of that disc saw them become the first new wavers to headline arenas such as Madison Square Garden.  Then in June 1983, The Police released Synchronicity, The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts, selling 8 million copies.  The disc yielded 4 top 20 singles -  Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breath You Take, which like the album, climbed all the way to #1.  When the band toured in 1983/84 in support of Synchronicity, they found they could fill 50,000 seat stadiums such as Shea in New York, the same venue the Beatles had filled some 2 decades prior.  As a result, perhaps the band felt they had no more mountains to climb, as soon after, they would disband, spurred on in part by Sting's decision to release a solo disc. This soundboard recording captures the band on their final tour until the 21st century, on August 15, 1983, 35 years ago today, in Virginia.

From May 2013 to October 2015, Paul McCartney's Out There tour covered the world, playing 91 shows on 4 different continents and grossing $275 million in the process. This high quality auidence recording captures one of the highlights of that tour, his show in San Francisco on August 14, 2014, just 4 years ago today.  This performance was the final concert and last official event ever held at Candlestick Park, a fitting way to go out since the stadium was also the site of the last ever Beatles concert (not counting the impromptu jam on the roof of Apple in January 1969).

As long time readers of this blog know, we’ve posted numerous shows from The Dead’s 1987 tour, which featured Jerry Garcia’s triumphant return from a near fatal diabetic coma. The mood at those shows was incredibly festive, as Dead Heads rejoiced that the band’s spiritual leader was still “truckin’ on”. Led Zeppelin - 1979-08-11 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

The grounds at Knebworth House, located about 26 miles north of London, hosted their first rock festival in 1974, when the Allman Brothers, Van Morrison and The Doobie Brothers took the stage in front of 60,000 fans (go here for more on Knebworth's history). Additional festivals were held in 1975, 1976, and 1978 with acts such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis. No Knebworth show might have been more anticipated, however, than the one in 1979, when Led Zeppelin agreed to perform. For Led Zep, it would be their first live show since the death of Robert Plant's son in 1977, and their first show in the UK in 4 years. Ticket demand for the initial August 4 performance was so great that a second show was added on August 11. Zeppelin would return to the stage in front of over 400,000 fans during those 2 days, reinforcing their place at the time as rock's biggest act. Their shows would also feature the first live performances of tunes from their soon to be released album. In Through The Out Door. Some reviews claimed the band sounded rusty -- hardly surprising after a 2 year lay off - and the band members themselves were not completely satisfied with their performance. Maybe they sensed it was the beginning of the end. Led Zep's original line up would never again perform live in their home country. In fact, within a year, John Bonham would be dead and Led Zeppelin would be no more.
