2010s - #6: On October 13, 2017, Squeeze released their 15th studio album entitled The Knowledge.  The band then launched a brief US tour in support of the disc, starting on November 14 in Atlanta and concluding on December 2 in Huntington NY.  This webcast recording captures Squeeze near the endnd of that run, in Portchester NY on November 30, 2017, just 3 years ago today.

Hootie & The Blowfish - 1994-11-30 - New York, NY (SBD)

1990s - #6: Darius Rucker, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, and Mark Bryan all met as freshmen at the University of South Carolina in 1986. Like probably thousands of college kids across the country, they formed a band, dreaming, but probably never expecting, to find fame and fortune. Eight years later in 1994, when Hootie and the Blowfish released the album Cracked Rear View, could anyone have imagined, including the band, that the album would sell over 16 million copies? That makes it the 15th best selling album in history! Yes, I agree it's almost sacrilegious that Hootie's debut outsold such albums as Abbey Road, Born In The USA, Led Zeppelin II and Dark Side Of The Moon, just to name a few. No one is going to confuse Daruis and his compatriots with Lennon & McCartney when it comes to song writing. But, if everyone can put aside the Hootie backlash just for a few seconds (it's amazing how you can't find anyone who admits they bought the album even though it sold 16 million copies!), folks might recall why they were hooked in the first place. Namely, these guys wrote a host of catchy tunes, Darius has a unique voice, and they sound like the best bar band you ever heard. This soundboard recording captures them before all the hype, in New York, on November 30, 1994, 26 years ago today.

1970s - #6: As I’ve mentioned in the past, in the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. He released his 2nd album I’m The Man, on October 5, 1979 That disc would go to #22 on the Billboard charts. While not quite the one two punch of Elvis Costello’s first 2 albums (My Aim Is True and This Year's Model), Jackson’s debut and follow up discs made it clear he would be a musical force in the years to come.  This FM broadcast captures Joe about 6 weeks after the release of I'm The Man, in London, on November 29, 1979, 41 years ago today.

The record placed an emphasis on religion and spirituality, particularly in the songs Gloria, With a Shout, and Tomorrow. 1960s - #6:  After forming the super group in early 1969 Blind Faith along wioth Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton quickly grew tired of the band.  In fact, during Blind Faith'st band's only tour, EC found himself spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett than he was with Winwood and Baker! Once the tour ended, EC left Blind Faith and joined up with Delaney & Bonnie. This soundboard recording finds EC on tour with Delaney & Bonnie on November 27, 1969, 51 years ago today.

English Beat - 1982-11-26 - Montego Bay, Jamaica (SBD)

1980S - #5: In 1982, the English Beat, a band that fused reggae, ska, pop and new wave influences in their music, released their 3rd album, entitled Special beat Service. The disc went to number 39 on the Billboard charts, in large part due to the singles I Confess and Save It For Later. Videos for both of those songs received solid airplay of MTv. I remember buying the album, and both songs had that “once you hear it, you can’t get it out of my head” quality about them (in a good way!). By 1983, however, the English Beat disbanded, with Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger forming General Public while Andy Cox and David Steele starting Fine Young Cannibals. Download this soundboard recording of the English Beat from Montego Bay on November 26, 1982, 38 years ago today, to hear the band right before the break up.

Derek & The Dominos - 1970-11-26 - Cincinnati, OH (Ex Aud)

1970s - #5: They recorded a double album, of just 14 songs, which flopped both critically and commercially upon release. They played about 30 concerts in the UK and about the same number in the US, mostly at small clubs and theaters. Their tour was marked by massive drug abuse and alcohol consumption. They split apart almost as quickly as they came together, with tension between the band members and paranoia due to all the drugs making it impossible for them to record a 2nd album. They were Derek and The Dominos, and their one studio effort, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is now regarded as one of the masterpieces of rock and roll. The title track is one of the most famous songs in rock history, and other tunes from the album, such as Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, Keep on Growing, and Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad, are all classics. It is one of the albums I grew up with, that I bought just about 2 years after its release, that I wore out the groves on, that helped foster my everlasting love for all things rock and roll. This excellent audience recording captures Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon on their one and only tour, on November 26, 1970, in Cincinnati, a half century ago years ago today. Of note - they get some help from the one and only BB King on the last tune of the night!

Allman Brothers Band - 1980-11-24 - Atlanta, GA (FM)

1980s - #4: In February 1979 the Allman Brothers Band, who had recently reformed after splitting in 1976, released the album Enlightened Rougues. The disc was well received by critics and  fans, thanks in large part to some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love. Despite the album;s succes, the band was in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years.  Despite their troubles, the Allmans could still put on a great live show, as evidenced in this FM Broadcast from the Fox Theater in tAtlanta on November 24,1980, 4 decades ago this very day.

In 1975 by the late Harry Chapin and Bill Ayres founded Why Hunger, an organization whose goal was to put an end to hunger suffered by 49 million Americans and nearly 1 billion people worldwide. That same year, they came up with an idea to reach out for donations and aid using the power of the music and the radio. In conjunction with WNEW-FM, the leading rock station in America at the time, they launched Hungerthon, a 24 hour radio broadcast designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in the United States. Live music from rock artists concerned with this serious problem became a staple of each Hungerthon broadcast. Hungerthon has been an annual even since 1985, held right around Thanksgiving.  I heard my first Hungerton Broadcast on WNEW in 1986 and have been donating ever since.

In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12.  The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts.  This soundboard recording captures the band in new York right before Don't Dream It's Over skyrocketed up the charts, at CBGBs on November 22, 1986, 34 years ago today.  Of note, they finish the set with I Got You, the big hit from Split Enz, the band Neil and Tim Finn were in prior to Crowded House!

1990s - #4: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, the band released the album August & Everything, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King.  The Counting Crows had arrived.  This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in  in support of their stunning debut disc, on November 21, 1993, 27 years ago today.

1960s - #4; On November 20, 1963, 57 years ago today, The Beatles performed two shows at Manchester’s ABC Cinema. The concerts marked the 16th date of the band's 1963 Autumn Tour.  Each show featured the same 10 song set:  I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You, All My Loving, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Roll Over Beethoven, Boys, Till There Was You, She Loves You, Money (That’s What I Want) and Twist And Shout. .During the first show, Pathé News filmed the group performing She Loves You and Twist And Shout, as captured in this soundboard recording.. Accompanied with backstage footage and crowd scenes, that film became an eight-minute movie feature entitled The Beatles Come To Town, which was shown in the UK in late December.

Stevie Wonder - 1972-11-19 - New York, NY (FM)

1970s' #4: On October 28, 1972, Stevie Wonder released Talking Book, his fifteenth studio album The disc, which is often cited as the start of his "classic period", went to #3 on the billboard charts and won 3 Grammy Awards.  Two singles from the album, and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, both climbed to #1 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures Wonder about 3 weeks after the release of Talking Book, on the WNET show, Soul, on November 19, 1972, 4 dozen years ago today.

Traffic - 1970-11-18 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

1970s - #3: After Blind Faith disbanded in late 1969, Steve Winwood went to work on what he thought would be a solo album. Partway through the recording, he invited former Traffic band mates Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to join him. Traffic had been reborn, and the album that would emerge from this reunion was the legendary disc, John Barleycorn Must Die, This soundboard, from November 18, 1970, a half century ago today. years ago today, captures them on their 2nd US tour that year in support of the album, from the Fillmore East in NY. The band had recently expanded from a trio into a quartet again, with the addition of Blind Faith member Rick Grech on bass. The change not only added a welcome bottom end to the material, but freed up Steve Winwood and Chris Wood to improvise more on the group's newer songs. In fact, Winwood, usually thought of as a keyboard player, takes several turns on guitar during this show, demonstrating just what a multi-talented performer he truly was.

The Beach Boys - 1967-11-17 -Detroit, MI (SBD) 

1960s - #4 - On September 18, 1967, The Beach Boys released their 12th studio album, entitled Smiley Smile. Almost 16 months had passed since their last release, the new legendary album Pet Sounds. As we all now know, Smiley Smile was neither the album the band had hoped to release nor the disc the public expected. Brian Wilson suffered a mental breakdown attempting to record Smile, an album that he hoped would match the work done by the Beatles on Rubber Soul and Revolver. He also drove a huge wedge between himself and the other band members, especially Mike Love, who felt the new music was far too complex and would alienate the group's core audience. Eventually, Smile was shelved, and over the next 40 years would become the most legendary unreleased album in rock history. Smiley Smile, would only reach #41 on the Billboard charts, and Brian Wilson would withdraw from the band soon after its release. So, when the Beach Boys launched their 5th annual Thanksgiving tour in Detriot on November 17, 1967, 53 years ago today, Brian did not accompany the band. In addition, for the first time, the Beach Boys used backing musicians while on the road, including Daryl Dragon on piano, who would later go on to fame as the Captain, in the Captain and Tennile! This soundboard recording captures that Detroit show, as well as excerpts from several other dates on that tour.

Linda Ronstadt - 1976-11-16 - Offenbach Germany, (FM)

1970s - #2: In August 1976, Linda Ronstadt released the album Hasten Down The Wind, which became her 3rd straight million selling disc, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish that feat. The album also earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance The album was different from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters as opposed to country rock tunes. The title track, for example was written by then up and coming songwriter Warren Zevon. One of the most famous tracks from the album, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, was composed by the then little known Karla Bonoff. The album received huge critical acclaim, and also spent several weeks in the top 3 on the Billboard charts. Ronstadt went on tour later that year in support of the album, and this soundboard captures her 44 years ago today, on November 16, 1976, in Germany.

Cream - 1966-11-15 - London, UK (SBD)

1960s - #3 - Eric Clapton - Guitar.  Jack Bruce - Bass.  Ginger Baker - Drums.  The "cream" of the crop of jazz and blues musicians in the London music scene pooled their talents in 1966, to create rock's first classic power trio.  While their time together would be short, Cream proved to be one of the most influential rock groups in history, and are often considered the first "super group".  They would pave the way for improvisational, free form jams that would become the hallmark of psychedelic rock scene. This soundboard captures Cream on November 15, 1966 in London, 54 years ago today and just about 4 months after their live debut in July.  It is the earliest know recording of the band, and features shorter versions of their songs as compared to later live performances. More importantly, the show is electrifying.  Eric is on fire, and plays with total abandon, living up to the "Clapton Is God" graffiti scrawled throughout London's subway stations.   Download this one to capture Cream at their birth!

2010s - #4:  In November 2019, Chris & Rick Robinson announced a Black Crowes reunion tour would take place beginning in June 2020.  To preview that tour , the band played 2 shows, on (Monday, November 11 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City and then at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on November 14.  On November 13, 2019, just a year ago today and the day before the Troubador show, Chris and Rich appeared the radio program, Morning Becomes Eclectic, as captured in this FM Broadcast. Of course, that tour, and so many others, never got started as we all deal with the terrible challenge and tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic. May some sort of normal return soon.
