Believe it or not, the links between Neil and The Grateful Dead go all the way back to 1963. Neil was with John Phillips (of the Mama’s and Papa’s) when John wrote Me & MY Uncle, a tune that later became a staple of The Dead’s live shows. Neil should have been on stage on the last night of Monterrey Pop, right before The Who and The Dead, but he was feuding with the other members of Buffalo Springfield at the time and skipped the festival. He and The Dead were both at Woodstock, where CSNY played just their 2nd concert ever. Neil also appeared at The SNACK benefit in March 1975, one of just 4 concerts the Dead played that year, playing alongside Bob Dylan and The Band, 2 other groups with long time ties to the Grateful Dead. In November 1991, Neil sat in with the Dead at the Bill Graham Memorial concert, playing Dylan’s Forever Young in memory of the late, great promoter. This FM broadcast captures Neil just 5 years ago today, in New York, on Sepetmber 29, 2012.

Van Morrison - 2016-09-29 - London, UK (FM)

Even though Van Morrison lived in San Francisco for a while in the 1970s, he was never on the same bill with the Grateful Dead  The closest they came was at the week of shows closing the Fillmore West, when the Dead played on July 2 and Van appeared on July 4. Yet, The Dead, and especially Garcia, never hesitated to cover his music. The Dead played Gloria on a handful of occasions in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, then in the late 1990s the tune became a fairly regular encore for the band. The Jerry Garcia Band regularly covered tunes from Van The Man, including And It Stoned Me, Tupelo Honey, Crazy Love, He Ain't Give You None and Bright Side of the Road. I was fortunate to see Jerry play the last 2 at an outstanding show at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 1991, which we’ve posted for you several years ago here at So Many Road. In any event, this FM Broadcast captures Van The Man on London o september 29, 2016, just a year ago today.

The Who - 2000-09-28 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

The Who and The Grateful Dead first met in 1967, when both bands played at Monterrey Pop. The Dead played right after The Who, and right before Jimi Hendrix, a tough spot indeed. Jerry Garcia would later say “I don’t think anybody even saw us, they were still recovering from The Who. So we went on and played our set and then Jimi came on and just annihilated the place and then he destroyed all his shit, too. We might as well not have been there” Both bands would also play Woodstock in 1969. From those early meetings, it seems that the two bands, and especially Garcia and Pete Townshend, struck up a strong sense of mutual admiration. Garcia was impressed by Townshend’s guitar work and the Who’s explosive performances. In October 1976, after the Dead and the Who shared the bill for the two Day on The Green shows in Oakland CA. Pete came up to Jerry and told him that he was amazed that the Dead had not repeated one song. The Who had been doing the same show, every night, for over a year and a half, Townshend told Garcia. In 1981, The Who and The Dead again shared the same bill, this time for a show on March 28 in Essen Germany for the Rockpalast. Townshend sat in with the Dead for the last part of their performance, a show we posted here on So Many Roads. One last GD and The Who connection - in the 1990s, the Dead actually played Baba O'Riley live on 12 occasions!  This soundboard recording captures The Who 17 years ago today, on September 28, 2000, in Atlanta.

According to legend, Traffic’s return in 1994 is directly related to the Grateful Dead. Supposedly, a very enthusiastic Deadhead left a voice mail for Bob Weir suggesting that it would be cool if the Dead and Traffic toured together.Whether or not that story’s true, the fact is that Traffic did serve as lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s 1994 summer tour. Of course, the connection between the 2 bands goes back to the 1960s/1970s, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 16, 1970 that long was believed to have taken place a week later at the Anderson Theater. (go here for the full details) In the 1980s, the Dead added two Steve Winwood compositions to their set lists, Dear Mr. Fantasy and Gimme Some Lovin. Those songs left the band’s live repertoire, however, with the passing of Brent Mydland in 1990.  This FM broadcast captures Traffic before they began their association with th Daed, in London on September 26, 1967, a half century ago today.

Robert Hunter - 1997-09-25 - Minneapolis, MN (SBD)

Robert Hunter, who wrote or co-wrote many of the Grateful Dead's best known tunes (Uncle John's Band, Truckin, Friend Of The Devil and Dark Star, just to name a few), started his association with Jerry Garcia in the early 1960's, when the two played together in blue grass bands, In the 70's and 80's., Hunter often served as the led-in band for Garcia's solo concerts. When the Grateful Dead entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hunter, at Garcia's insistence was included as part of the band! This soundboard recording captures Hunter in Minneapolis on September 25, 1997, 2 decades ago this very day.

Comes A Time: Tribute To Jerry Garcia – 2005-09-24 – Berkeley, CA (SBD)

Ten years after the death of Jerry Garcia, many of his former band mates, as well as numerous other friends, joined together to pay tribute to the man and his music. The Comes A Time concert (the name was taken from one of Jerry’s most poignant tunes – you can find the lyrics here) opened with David Nelson and the Black Mountain Boys, a band that Jerry Garcia played banjo for back 1964. Melvin Seals and Merl Saunders, two of the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary keyboardists, followed that set. Then, the evening’s master of ceremonies, former Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir took the stage to play a set with his band, Rat Dog. As Rat Dog concluded their set, the main event began. Weir stayed on stage and was joined by the rest of the Jerry Garcia Tribute Band – former Dead members Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Bruce Hornsby and Donna Jean Godchaux as well as Jeff Chimenti, Hamza El Din, Bill Walton, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring and Trey Anastasio. For the next 3 hours, this all star contingent roared through 20 of Garcia’s Grateful Dead tunes, with Hornsby and Anastasio providing some of the most memorable moments of the night. A full review of the show can be found here.  Fortunately, the amazing music helped folks forget about 3 glaring omissions from the show. Phil Lesh of the Dead; Robert Hunter, Garcia’s lyricist; and David Grisman, Garcia’s bluegrass partner, all were absent from the show, for reasons no one seemed to be able or want to explain. The night though was not about the negative. As Mickey Hart said at the show’s conclusion, all those present needed to take this spirit and positive energy of the night and "do something with it.” I suggest the first thing you do is share in the spirit and energy of September 24, 2005, a dozen years ago today, by downloading this soundboard recording of the Jerry Garcia Tribute Band’s set.

Rolling Stones - 1970-09-22 - Paris, France (FM)

As I did my research for this post, I was surprised by the number of connections between the Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead. Two Rolling Stones songs occasionally found their way into the Dead’s live shows, The Last Time and Satisfaction. Both bands also performed covers of Not Fade Away, Little Red Rooster and It’s All Over Now. The Dead and The Stones were both involved in the concert turned debacle at Altmont on December 6, 1969, where Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by the Hell’s Angels. The Stones had hired the Angels to work with security at the recommendation of the Dead, who had used the motorcycle gang in that capacity on numerous occasions with no issues. In the wake of Altamont, Sam Culter, who had managed the Stones up to that point, was abandoned by Jagger and Richards. He turned to the Grateful Dead for help, and eventually became their manager for several years in the early 1970s. Culter coordinated the 1970 Festival Express, the Europe 72 tour, as well as the Dead’s appearance at another, far more successful festival, Watkins Glen in 1973. By the way, one Rolling Stone actually appeared live with the Grateful Dead! Mick Taylor, the Stone's lead guitarist from 1969 to 1974, sat in with The Dead at their Rain Forest Benefit Concert at Madison Square Garden on September 24, 1988.  This FM broadcast captures the Stones in Paris on September 22, 1970, 47 years ago today, with the aforementioned Mr. Taylor on guitar!

The links between Santana and the Grateful Dead go back to the1960s, when both bands emerged from the San Francisco music scene. In fact, some sources claim that Garcia helped mentor Carlos at the beginning of his career. The 2 bands would often share the bill together, such as at a New Year’s Eve 1968 show at Winterland or a jam session along with the Jefferson Airplane in February 1970 at the Family Dog. Both bands, of course, appeared at Woodstock in 1969. In the late 1980s and early 1990s. Santana served as the Dead’s lead in band for numerous shows. On several occasions, Carlos joined the Dead on stage for a few numbers. Bill Graham would play a major role in promoting shows by both Santana and The Grateful Dead throughout both bands’ long storied careers. It's no surprise then that both Santana and The Dead played at the concert in Graham’s honor in November 1991 after the fabled promoters tragic death.  This soundboard (2 CDs) plus audience (1 CD) recording captures Santana on September 22, 1982, 35 years ago today, in Canada.

Allman Brothers Band - 1980-09-21 - Den Haag, Netherlands (FM)

Few bands are more linked together in musical history than the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers. The San Francisco psychedelic pioneers and the Macon Georgia Southern rockers both were renowned for their improvisational jams. Both bands had 2 drummers, had roots in blues, country, jazz, folk and bluegrass, and suffered tragic losses in the early 1970s only to rise to new heights. They played 3 dates together in February 1970 at the Fillmore East. Both bands were connected to Bill Graham, and as a result frequently headlined both Fillmores. In fact, the Allmans closed the Fillmore East, while the Dead did likewise at the Fillmore West. In  1973, the 2 bands played together for 3 shows that summer, on June 9 and 10 in Washington DC and on July 28 at Watkins Glen. At those shows, various band members shared the stage together during the encores. On December 31, 1973, the Grateful Dead took a rare break from performing on New Year’s Eve, so who else but the Allman Brothers stepped in to play a show at the Cow Palace. Of course, the Dead couldn’t stay away completely, as Garcia and Kreutzman showed up to join the Allmans for the encores. The relationship between the 2 bands continues long after the 1970s.  For example, Warren Haynes played lead guitar for Allmans, The Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends. And in March 2009, during the Allman's 40th anniversary series of concerts at the Beacon, who else showed up for the last night of the run but none other than Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. This FM broadcast captures the Allamans in the Netherlands on September 21, 1980, 37 years ago today.

Gov't Mule - 2001-09-20 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule has a long history of connections to the Grateful Dead.  Haynes played guitar for Phil Lesh and Friends. Then in 2004 and 2009, he played with The Dead, one of the several post Grateful Dead incarnations of the band. On the last night of The Dead’s 2004 tour, Warren also played a solo acoustic set, then sat in with the Allman Brothers, who were co-headlining the night. The next day, Warren was back on the road as part of the Allmans’ tour! Of course, since 1989, Warren has played with the Allmans, a band with a long history of being connected to the Grateful Dead, on a regular basis. His tune, Patchwork Quilt, is a tribute to Jerry, mentioning how the Allmans were at Jones Beach the night Jerry died (see last month's August 8th post).  The lyrics also reference a tie dyed sky while noting that "the blood of his music runs through the veins of our guitars Bright lights, Dark Star." In 2013, Warren launched his Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tour, a series of shows in which he played a set list composed entirely of Garcia & Grateful Dead tunes, backed by a symphony orchestra. For many of those shows, Haynes played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar. Bruce Hornsby - 2009-09-20 - Boston, MA (SBD)

Bruce Hornsby, of course, served as the Grateful Dead’s keyboardist from September 15, 1990 to March 24, 1992. Yet even before and after his official stint with the band, Hornsby had significant ties to the Dead. Hornsby incorporated Grateful Dead tunes into his live shows from the start of his solo career, a practice which continues until this day. Hornsby often served as the lead-in act for the Dead in the late 1980s, and sat in with them on numerous occasions as a guest after his official departure from the group. Jerry Garcia played guitar on several Hornsby compositions on Bruce's albums A Night On The Town, Harbor Lights and Hot House.After his time with the Grateful Dead, Hornsby’s solo concerts took on a more improvisational flair, including building set lists around request from the audience. In the wake of Jerry Garcia’s death, he participated in the Further Festivals in 1996 and 1997, then became a member of the Other Ones, the first of many reincarnations of the Grateful Dead. Hornsby inducted the Dead into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and participated in the Comes A Time show in 2005 in honor of the 10th anniversary of Garcia’s passing. In recent years, Hornsby and Weir have performed several shows together, with each doing a solo set followed by the pair playing together on a number of tunes. And of course, at Fare Thee Well shows in 2015, celebrating the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversay, Hornsby was on Keybaords alonside, Weir, Lesh, hart & Kreutzman. The list of connections between Bruce and The Dead is almost as endless as the possibilities that existed every time either started to jam!  This soundboard recording captures Bruce in Boston 8 years ago today on September 20, 2009,, th exact same date of the pist coming up latr today at 4 pm!

Grateful Dead - 1987-09-19 - Madison Square Garden, NY (SBD) 

As long time readers of this blog know, I’ve written extensively about how in 1987 Jerry Garcia returned to the stage from a diabetic coma that almost cost him his life. That year was also a time when the Dead achieved a new level of popularity, as the MTV generation, captivated by the innovative video for Touch Of Grey, climbed on the bus. In addition, the summer of 1987 featured 6 historic shows where the Dead served as Dylan’s back-up band. I attended 8 Dead shows that year - 2 at the Brenden Byrne Arena in April, one at Giants Stadium which included Dylan, and all 5 in September at Madison Square Garden  The September 18 show at MSG not only is my favorite Dead concert of the 70 plus I attended, but also was the first show selected for the 30 Trips Around The Sun box bet. The whole run was a joyous celebration of Jerry's return from the "dead" so we're going to bring you the last 2 nights.  We'll start with the is soundboard recording from September 19, 1987, 3 decades ago this very day Three songs from the show - I Need A Miracle, a highly appropriate cover of Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm and Black Peter, - were all broadcast live as part of the TV coverage of Farm Aid. What would a month "deadicated" to the Grateful Dead be without a post from a GD cover/tribute band. Of course, JRAD has a bit more credibility tha most such bands since their leader, drummer Joe Russo, was part of Furthur with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, as well as a member of the 2014 line up of Phil & Friends. This soundboard matrix recording captures JRAD on September 19. 2014, 3 years ago today, in Chicago.  By the way, I first learned about JRAD in June 2015 the pl;ayed the 6th Annual Songs Of Love Benefit Concert at Webster Hall. Grateful Dead - 1990-09-19 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (SBD)

Just as the Grateful Dead were in transition in September 1990, so was the New York venue they were playing in. In 1989, some 21 years after it was first erected on the site of the old Penn Station at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue, Madison Square Garden (the 4th building to bear that name), underwent its first major renovation. The color scheme, a horrid combination of red, orange, yellow, green and blue seats, was changed to a more refined and updated purple and teal. Hundred of blue seats, which were way up on the 4th level, furthest from the action, were ripped out and replaced by 88 luxury boxes. In replacing the blue seats, the Garden had 2 motives. The first was financial, as luxury suites could bring in far more revenue, selling at that time for over $150,000 a year. The 2nd was public relations, as the blue seats had gained a less than respectable reputation thanks to the some quite passionate and extremely rowdy New York Ranger fans that occupied them during hockey season. How rowdy and passionate you ask? Well, Rangers fans in the blue seats would purchase Islanders, Bruins and Flyer jerseys, (representing 3 of the Ranger’s most hated rivals) and set them on fire in the arena, without a 2nd thought. In any event, the first events held in the Garden while renovations were in progress were the Grateful Dead 6 concerts in September 1990. Getting into the Garden during that run amidst all the construction felt somewhat like cattle being led to the slaughter, but once you found your seats and the show began, everything turned out just fine. As we  promised yesterday, here's night 5 of the run, a soundboard recording from September 19, 1990, 27 years ago today. This one starts off with a roaring Jack Straw and never loses momentum. The trio to end the first set includes the longest Franklin's Tower ever played, according to Deadbase, while the 2nd set opens with Playing In The Band, a rare spot for that tune and includes an even rarer Let it Grow, a song usually found in the first set.  Enjoy!

Grateful Dead - 1990-09-18 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (SBD)

When the Grateful Dead arrived at Madison Square Garden in September 1990, the band was still feeling the effects of losing keyboardist Brent Mydland just a month earlier due to a drug overdose. Wince Welnick, who would step into Mydland's role, has played just 5 shows with the Dead when they arrived at MSG, starting on September 9 in Richfield, OH.  Bruce Hornsby, who was also joining the band, would not make his debut until night 2 at the Garden. So none one - band nor fnas - had any idea what would transpire at these shows.  Well, The Dead as they has done in the wake of the loss of Pigpen way back in 1973, rose to the challenge, stunning the new York crowd with 6 legendary performances.  Night 3 - September 16 - was released on Dick's Pick's #9.  The bulk of night 6 - September 20 was released om Road Trips Volume 2, with a few tunes from September 18 and 19 sprinkled in. Since the majority of  the songs from the latter 2 shows have gone unreleased, we are going to take a small liberty with our no official releases policy and bring you both of them. But once the links expire, they won't be put back up, So get them now while you can. In September 1993, the Grateful Dead played 6 nights at Madison Square Garden, of which I made 2, on the 16th and 17th. As we all know, by 1993, Garcia's health was failing in the wake of his 1992 illness. So, the magical moments were harder and harder to come by. This soundboard recording of night 1 of the run, from September 16, 1993, 2 dozen years ago today, shows just what the band was still capable of.  A monsoon had hit new York City that day, and torrential rain was falling right up until show time.  So what else would the Dead do but open with Rain from the Beatles, just the 7th time they had ever played it live. What a perfect song for the band and for the night. That rolled right into a smoking Shakedown Street that shook the Garden to the rafters. The 4 song run to open the 2nd set is the last time the Dead ever played China > Rider, Estimated > Eyes back to back. And Not Fade Away to close the 2nd Set, with the crowd chatting "Love Is Real Not Fade Away" in tribute to the band, always made a show worthwhile. Enjoy!

As promised yesterday, this soundboard recording captures night 63 of 9 at MSG in 1988, from September 16, 1988, 29 years ago today.  This show was so hot, and the crowd so intense, that Garcia played It's All Over Now Baby Blue as the encore just to calm everyone down. A fiery Hey Pocky Way, a wonderful Me & My Uncle into Mexaclii Blues and an unexpected and beautiful To Lay Me Down highlighted the first set.  According to the Setlist Program website, the 5 song sequence to open the 2nd Set is the only time the band ever played those songs in that order. The Sugar Magnolia to end the 2nd set just about blew the roof off the Garden, especially when the jam before Sunshine Daydream borrowed from Greatest Story Ever Told! Enjoy!

Jerry Garcia Band - 1984-09-15 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

During their 30 year long strange trip, the Grateful Dead were one of the few groups that saw members pursue solo endeavors without it leading to the band splitting apart. For example, Jerry Garcia managed to carve out quite a solo career while never leaving the band. From his work with Merle Saunders, Old and in the Way, David Grisman and Legion of Mary, to his guest appearances on albums by with The New Riders of The Purple Sage, Jefferson Airplane, CSNY and Bruce Hornsby (just to name a few) to his solo albums and concerts, Garcia has a career that was hall of fame worthy even if he never played a note with the Dead. This soundboard recording captures Jerry on his hoe turf in San Francisco on September 15, 1984, 33 years ago today.

Jefferson Airplane - 1970-09-15 - San Francisco CA (early) (SBD)

Few bands are as connected to the Grateful Dead as the Jefferson Airplane. Both emerged from the San Francisco scene in 1965 and would be leading lights of psychedelic rock. The 2 bands would headline the Human Be-in on January 14, 1967 in Golden Gate Park, a concert which put San Francisco’s counter culture on the map and served as a prelude to the Summer Of Love. The Airplane and Dead also performed at Monterrey Pop in June 1967, and at Woodstock in August 1969. In fact, the 2 bands shared the same bill quite frequently, with Deadbase listing 50 such concerts from 1965 to 1970. Who knows how many more undocumented pairings also took place? Most of those shows took place at famed San Francisco venues such as Winterland, The Carousel Ballroom, The Family Dog and, of course, The Fillmore. Famed promoter Bill Graham was heavily involved with both bands. In 1967, as the Grateful Dead were working on their debut album, Jerry Garcia also spent time helping the Airplane produce their landmark 2nd album, Surrealistic Pillow. Garcia in fact, was the source of the album’s title, when he mentioned that, as a whole, the album sounded "as surrealistic as a pillow is soft." Although RCA, the Airplane’s record company would not acknowledge Garcia's considerable contributions to the album with a "Producer" credit, he is listed as "spiritual advisor." While the 2 bands would go their separate ways in the 1970s, their initial partnership would spotlight the cultural revolution that was taking place in the City By The Bay.

Elvis Costello - 2002-09-15 - Brussels, Belgium (FM)

The ever versatile Mr. Costello was one of the artists who participated in the Deadicated tribute album in 1991, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter composition Ship of Fools. He later covered It Must Have Been The Roses on a 2nd tribute album entitled Stolen Roses. In addition to those 2 tracks, Costello has also played Friend of the Devil, Ripple and Tennessee Jed in concert. In 1989, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir joined Elvis for a jam session at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley CA. It was so spontaneous that Jerry had to borrow Costello's guitar! Elvis has continued his relationship with The Dead into the 21st century joining Further on stage in on March 27, 2001, at a show in New York. Costello sang vocals on Friend of the Devil, Ship of Fools, and Ripple, while wife Diana Krall sat in on keyboards! This FM broadcast captures Costello in Belgium on September 15, 2002, 15 years ago today.
