U2 entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, along with Buddy Guy, The O'Jays, Percy Sledge, and The Pretenders. Lets just say that the class didn't quite have the star power of other induction groups.

This soundboard recordingf captures U2 in Brazil on January 31, 1998, 26 years ago today during the Pop Mart tour.  While many of the special effects and elaborate staging at the concerts were designed to poke fun at popular culture, the jokes often missed their mark, and simply confused those in attendance. In fact, after the tour ended, U2 announced it would begin “reapplying for the job of best band in the world.”

Creedence Clearwater Revival entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the Class of 1993.  As we discussed in our post a few days ago about that induction, while all the members of CCR were at the ceremony, John Fogerty refused to play with any of them, being backed instead by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on several Creedence hits.

Elvis Presley - 1973-01-27 - Las Vegas NV (late) (SBD)

As mentioned in our last post, Elvis Presley was part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's inaugural induction class in 1986. What else would you expect for the man nicknamed "The King".

This soundboard recording captures Elvis in Las Vegas on Janaury 27, 1973, 51 years ago today, a time when The King was on top of the world.  In late 1972, his single Burning Love reached #2 on The Billboard charts, and #1 on the Cashbox Top 40 list. The tune would be Elvis's 40th and final Top 40 hit. On January 28, 1973, MGM's film, Elvis On Tour, won a Golden Globe Award for best documentary. Two weeks prior to that, on January 14, Elvis has played a concert from Hawaii which was broadcast around the world via satellite to an audience of over 1 billion people. Ironically, the show was not broadcast live in the US as it conflicted with the Super Bowl. American audiences had to wait until April to see the concert. RCA released a live album entitled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which captured the concert in its entirety. The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, it would be all downhill for Elvis, however, from that point until his tragic death just 4 years later in 1977.

Buddy Holly - 1958-01-26 - Ed Sullivan Show, New York, NY (SBD)

The late, great Buddy Holly was part of the inugural class of the Rock & Roll Hall oF fame, inducted alongside Chuck Berry, Elvis Presely, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke.  Talk about star power. What's truly incredible is Holly's career lasted just about 3 years, as he was taken from us far too soon in  a plane crash of February 3, 1959,  a moment immortalized in the song American Pie as "the day the msuic died." Yet Holly's influence was enormous. The Beatles (beetles) name was inspired in part by Crickets, Holly's backing band. Holly wrote his own songs, something few artists did at the time. The tune Not Fade Away may be among the most covered in rock history, especially by bands playing it live. Who knows what his legacy might have been if fate hadn't intervened.

This TV soundboard recording captures Holly & The Crickets during their 2nd appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, on January 26, 1958, 64 years ago today.  Long before Sullivan had issues with rockers like the Rolling Stones and The Doors, he had a run in with Buddy Holly.  About  a day before this appearance, Sullivan decided he didn't want Holly to perform Oh Boy, feeling the song was too raucous. Holly refused to make the change, telling Sullivan he already alerted his hometown friends that he was performing Oh Boy.  To spite Holly, Sullivan cut his peformance from two songs to one.  He also mispronounced Holly’s name when he introduced the band, calling them “Buddy Hollet and his Crickets.” In addition, he had the line feed for Holly’s electric guitar turned off. Despite all that, Holly and the Crickets earned a tremendous reception from the crowd, which resulted in Sullivan inviting them back for a thrid show. Holly declined, telling Sullivan that he didn’t have enough money to ever make them return.

This soundboard recording captures the two on their first tour as a duo in Buenos Aires on January 25, 1996, 28 years ago today. They would go out on the road again in 1998, but that's been the last time they have collaborated to this point.  Who knows, though, what the future might bring.

Paul McCartney - 1990-01-23 - London, UK (SBD)

Paul McCartney was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as a member of The Beatles and then again, 11 years later, as a solo artist in 1999. McCartney did not show up for the Beatles induction as he was in legal disputes with George, Ringo, and John's widow, Yoko, at the time. Macca clearly made peace with everyone by 1994, as that year he inducted John into the Rock Hall as a solo artist.  At McCartney's 1999 inductiom his daughter Stella wore a T-Shirt emblazoned with the words "About F**king Time" in reference to that fact her dad had to wait 4 years after John to be recognized for his solo work.

This soundboard recording captures Sir Paul at Wembley Arena on January 23, 1990, 34 years ago today. This show is from his 1989/1990 World Tour, his first live performances since the end of Wings in 1980.  Unlike those Wings tours that conciously avoided most of Macca's work with The Beatles, this run saw him begin to embrace his past.

The first Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremonyy, held in 1986, featured one legendary inductee after the next.  Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis - everyone a no brainer.  The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrtae their achievement.  Those still with us, however, such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, showed why, in the words of Neil Young, "rock & roll will never die", as they led all star jams on such classics as Roll Over Beethoven, Reelin' & Rockin', and Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.

1987 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1987-01-21 - New York, NY (SBD)

The 2nd Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1987 featured a gigantic list of inductees who spanned the gamut from 1950's rock to blues to soul and more. Aretha Franklin became the first women inducted, though sadly the Queen Of Soul did not attend. BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, 3 blues legends, took their rightful place in the hall as did soulful legends Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson. Early legends such as Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley, also were part of the class of 1987. Musical moments included Orbison dueting with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Woman, Carl Perkins backed by Keith Richards and BB King on Blue Suede Shoes, and Smokey Robinson leading an all star jam on Going To A Go Go.

1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1988-01-20 - New York, NY (SBD)

The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class was one for the ages -  The Beach Boys, The Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr. and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcended any tension that may have still lingered. George and Ringo took the stage for a rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, backed by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger,  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone, supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.  Elton John played a medley of 1950s tunes and Fogerty sang Born On The Bayou. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

In another example of band infighting erupting at an induction ceremony, while all 7 members of Blondie were in attendance, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke would not let Frank Infante, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison and Gary Valentine perform.

1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1994-01-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony was another marked by both wonderous moments and lingering tensions. Jerry Garcia decided to skip the Grateful Dead's induction, though the rest of the band did their best to make light of the situation by bringing along a life size cardboard cut out of their lead guitarist.  Robbie Robertson of The Band was in attendance, but Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Paul McCartney, who skipped The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to legal dispues with his former bandmates and Yoko Ono, was on hand to induct John Lennon, He even hugged Ono at the end of his induction speech in an emotional reconciliation. If  only McCartney had performed in tribute to Lennon, instead of the odd pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose who played Come Together. No one in attendance will ever forget Bono's tribute to the late Bob Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!" Perhaps the best musical moments of the night belonged to 2 men not inducted in 1994. Jeff Beck played a moving version of People Get Ready to honor Rod Stewart, who had to miss the ceremony due to an earthquake in Los Angeles.  And Chuck Berry strutted his stuff at the age of 68 on Roll Over Beethoven, backed by  Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby.

1989 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1989-01-18 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 1989 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class featured the star power of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion.  Those present rocked the house, with help from some special guests. Tina Turner, on hand to induct Phil Spector, performed River Deep, Mountain High and provided backing vocals for Dion on The Wanderer.  Bruce Springsteen, who was a regular at almost very one of these early induction ceremonies, paid tribute to 1987 inductee Roy Orbison, who died just a weeks earlier.
